    The article concentrates on the non-transparency of ekphrasis, including the relevance - in the case of a full, in-depth analysis of particular ekphrasis - not only of the description but also of the artefact itself. The text reflects upon subjects rarely dealt with in ekphrasis research, such as on the meaning and relations of the concepts ‘presentation’ and ‘representation’. There is a focus on the question of multi-layered mediation, which is related to this discourse figure: through language, through the viewer’s perspective who writes about the work, through the reader themself, and also, or perhaps first and foremost, through the work itself. This all results in ekphrasis being treated as a representation of representation. This also gives rise to thoughts on the problem of translating the visual system to verbal and the issues related to this.

    The article focuses on the issue of describing a work of art in an essay. The paper presents ekphrasis and underlines the efficiency of an inter-artistic analysis in studying the phenomenon of ekphrasis. An interpretation offragments of Zagajewski’s and Pollakówna’s essays starts with presenting two works of art, The Music Lesson and Girl Interrupted at Her Music by Vermeer, from the perspective of art history. It is followed by a discussion of the verbal accounts of the paintings by Zagajewski and Pollakówna. Their contents and poetics are examined with special emphasis placed on the nature of the suggested description as it may focus on either the subject or the viewer, the representation itself or its connotations. Accordingly, it is suggested that the corresponding modes of ekphrasis should be labelled ‘denotational’ and ‘connotational’. In his description, Zagajewski resorts to an example of connotational ekphrasis whereas Pollakówna’s textual relation is a fine example of mixing the denotational and connotational facets of ekphrasis. The article presents specifi realizations of ekphrasis and the characteristic modes of perceiving works of art and describing them. It also shows how the observer’s subjective perspective and idiomatic style of expression manifest themselves.

    W artykule Ekfraza konotacyjna: Batszeba Rembrandta w ujęciu Gustawa Herlinga-Grudzińskiego w centrum uwagi znajduje się problem opisu dzieła sztuki w eseju. Punktem wyjścia do analizy i interpretacji deskrypcji artefaktu, tj. Batszeby Rembrandta, jest przybliżenie go z perspektywy historii sztuki. W dalszej części tekst skupia się na werbalnej relacji o obrazie, jaką przynosi esej Gustawa Herlinga-Grudzińskiego Rembrandt w miniaturze. Celem jest przedstawienie konkretnej realizacji formy ekfrazy, a także wskazanie na charakterystyczny tryb widzenia dzieła i pisania o nim – tak w warstwie treściowej, jak językowej. Na końcu pojawia się (wraz z uzasadnieniem) propozycja nazwania omawianego przykładu ekfrazą konotacyjną.
    The article “Connotational Ekphrasis: Rembrand’s Bathsheba in the Interpretation of Gustaw Gerling-Grudziński” focuses on the issue of describing a work of art in an essay. As a starting point for the analysis and interpretation of an artefact, the paper brings closer the very work of art, i.e. Rembrandt’s Bathsheba, from the perspective of art history. Next, the text discusses the verbal account of the painting put forward by Gustaw Herling-Grudziński in his essay “Rembrandt in a Miniature”. The aim is to present a concrete realization of ekphrasis and a characteristic mode of perceiving and writing about a work of art – both at the level of content and at the level of language. Finally, it is proposed to label the discussed example ‘connotational ekphrasis’.

    Artykuł koncentruje się na problematyce związków pomiędzy sferą słowa a sferą obrazu. Przedmiotem badania stają się terminy funkcjonujące w obszarze badań literaturoznawczych, komparatystycznych i interdyscyplinarnych, dotyczące powiązań werbalno-wizualnych. Zwraca się uwagę na wielość stosowanych pojęć, zestawia się je ze sobą, określa ich konotacje oraz operatywność, ustala relacje semantyczne między nimi. Chodzi w szczególności o namysł nad terminami „intersemiotyczność”, „interartystyczność” i „intermedialność” oraz „obrazowość”, „malarskość” i „ikoniczność”; następuje także odniesienie do pojęcia aluzji piktorialnej. Artykuł ma na celu – obok uporządkowania pola badawczego i przybliżenia ważnych, a mniej znanych na polskim gruncie rozstrzygnięć – ulokowanie w omawianej sieci terminologicznej zjawiska ekfrazy.
    This article focuses on the relationship between the sphere of the word and the domain of the image. It presents the terms associated with verbal-visual connections employed in the field of literary, comparative and interdisciplinary research. Attention is drawn to the multiplicity of concepts in use; the article juxtaposes them with each other, identifies their connotations, determines whether they are operational and comments on their possible synonymity. In particular, the paper analyses the terms ‘intersemioticity’, ‘interartisticism’ and ‘intermediality’ as well as ‘pictorialism’, ‘imagery’ and ‘iconicity’; it also discusses the notion of pictorial allusion. Apart from organizing the research field and turning a spotlight on important studies less known in Polish scholarly literature, the aim is to locate the phenomenon of ekphrasis in this terminological network.
