Opis:
This article deals with the poetry of Julije Benešić (his collection Istrgnuti listovi – Torn Pages) in the context of Croatian modernist poetry based on three assumptions: the first, deductive one is that Benešić’s literary, literary-historical, theatrical and public personality is a potential metonymy of the entire Croatian culture of the first two decades of the 20th century; the second, literary-historical assumption is that the choice to use free verse can be read as a counter-modernist gesture against rationalism and structure of rhymed verse of Croatian modernist poetry; third, from the cultural-historical point of view, it is assumed that Benešić’s poetical profile is a reflection of his counter-modernist attitude that was shaped beyond the dominant poetical practices of modernism. The goal of this presentation is as much a cultural-historical as it is a literary-historical one, aimed at proving a thesis by which a small poetical contribution by Julije Benešić is synecdoche for the condition and the atmosphere of Croatian culture of the late modernism and the first interwar years. The notion of counter-modernism is historiographically restricted here and encompasses Benešić’s disputing statements in relation with the dominant paradigm in synchrony with the modernist period. The choice of free verse is understood as a statement of notion about the restraints of the poetics of rhymed verse of Croatian modernism. Since free verse was not part of the canon at the time, Benešić tried to use it to legitimize his own work and democratize the system of poetical competencies.

Croatian‑Polish literary connections
Opis:
This paper deals primarily with the poetry of Zdravko Malić, one of the most prominent Croatian Polonists of the 20th century, founder of Croatian Polonistics as institutionalised philological discipline, and the author of a comprehensive and far ‑reaching literary ‑historic and translator’s body of work. Along with his literary ‑scientific work and work as a translator, as a poet Malić wrote a rather small but, in the composition of the whole of his interests, an indicative poetic contribution, which mirrors his research topics and the depth of their perception. As a Polonist, he covered his own poetic practice with a web of intertextual and citation points that helped him to refer to a foreign culture, Polish, as the starting point of his erudition. As a prolegomenon to the insight into his poetic collection, we will give a brief overview of Malić’s body of work and his activities, which supplements his biography as a Polonist.

Croatian-Polish Literary Relations
| Julije Beneśić
Poljska lirika, Danasnja Poljska
hrvatsko-poljske knjiżevne veze
Opis:
During his entire work in philology Julije Beneśić had systematically translated two types of texts: masterpieces of canonical Polish authors (on which he had worked for years, constantly rewriting them), considering them to be his most important work as an author and as a cultural mediator, however he also translated a series of shorter works of authors who were not famous in Croatia, which he undertook out of his polo- nophilic tendencies. In his work as a translator, Polish Lyricism, a chrestomathy spanning five centuries of Polish literature, holds a special place. It is an undertaking that united and achieved all translational goals, communicative, pragmatic, aesthetic and cognitive. Along with the preface to this collection, for a better understanding of Beneśics view on the history of Polish literature, his articles in a hard-to-find collection Poland Today are also important, especially Polish Literature in the Struggle for Freedom and Slavic Idea among the Poles, as well as the article Nationalism and Patriotism in Literature. Starting with the assumption that Beneśics role in Croatian-Polish connections cannot be overestimated, we will try to come to a conclusion, based on the aforementioned texts, to what extent were Beneśić’s choice as a translator and his work as a historian successful, i.e. did they correspond with topics important to the entire croatian literary and social environment of his, interwar, period, as well as our own period.

Croatian-Polish literary connections of the 19th century
Opis:
This paper deals with and comments on the biography and description of the literary work of the croatian author of the Romantic period, Medo Pucić, with a special review of the biography of Adam Mickiewicz which he wrote in Italian, along with translations of excerpts from Forefathers’ Eve. The objective of the paper is twofold: to establish a parallel between the two contemporaries in the context of wider Croatian-Polish literary connections of the 1830s and 1840s as well as to establish the value of biography as a literary-historic genre, especially when it is written in temporal synchrony with an intent to establish cultural reciprocity. in that light Pucić’s text on Mickiewicz, originally written in a non-Slavic language for an Italian audience, is not read simply as a Croatian version of the impact of Mickiewicz’s work among the Southern Slavs, but as an ambitious implementation of the Pan-Slavic idea.

Opis:
This paper presents Mažuranić’s early translations of Adam Mickiewicz, including the threefold thematic orientation: first we try to shed some light on the origin of six unsigned translation fragments from Mickiewicz’s The Books of the Polish People and of the Polish Pilgrimage, printed in “Danica” in 1837, whose authorship has been attributed differently in literature. Mickiewicz’s work had a significant impact on the Illyrians, and those fragments were the earliest translations of that political work among the South Slavs. The translation consists of a series of prose notes that are a free rewriting of the original, adapted to Croatian circumstances, and very successful as a whole, with an excellent imitation of Mickiewicz’s biblical‑rhetorical rhythm. We will document Mažuranić’s familiarity with Mickiewicz’s work through a possible direct intertextual and literary historic‑poetological relationship between Mickiewicz’s political writings and Mažuranić’s brochure Croats and Hungarians and finally elaborate on the influence of Polish messianism — in its variant found in Mickiewicz’s political writings — on the young Mažuranić in the atmosphere of the Croatian National Revival.
