- The paper presents monitoring results of sawfly (Diprionidae, Hym.) larvae occurrence and changes in abundance in the period of their feeding activity in different pine stands in the years between 2000 and 2002. The presence of larvae in tree crowns was established on the basis of counts of fallen excrements. The mass of fallen excrements and the number of excrement pellets accounted for great differences in abundance of larvae feeding in tree crowns among the successive years. Distinct periods of increased excrements fall were ascertained which corresponded to the peak of the abundance and activity of larvae. They occurred at different times in the successive years probably as a result of differences in the development pattern of two sawfly generations. In the case of high population abundance the excrements fall was more even, thus the limit between the end of the first and the beginning of the second development of the second sawfly generation was not distinct. Parts of stands where larvae were more abundant than in other fragments have been identified.
