In order to automatize the process of generalization of DTM (Digital Terrain Model) in TDB (Topographic Data Base), information about relief should be recorded in such a way, as to preserve real location of characteristic key forms and structure lines. Automatic generalization of DTM should involve generalization of database rather than graphic simplification of contour lines. Among the existing methods of DTM generalization one can distinguish various types of filtering (global, local) and heuristic approach based on a concept of generalization of structure lines. It uses digital operators in interactive cooperation between operator and the digital system. Here, generalization bases on the approximation of source SLM (structure line model) through the use of classic generalization methods such as, among others: magnification, deletion, combination, and simplification of single structure lines, followed by recomposition of secondary DTM basing on the resulting SLM. In the conducted research it was assumed, that for the composition of a hierarchical (multiscale) DTM basing on a generalization of significant morphological forms it is especially important to properly establish structure lines which constitute the topographic ..skeleton" of terrain. These lines were established basing on the existing topographic maps as well as on the analysis of TIN and GRID model. The aim was to see if it was possible to fully automatically determine structure lines basing on irregular (or regular) source data including no additional information on structural forms. Most algorithms which determine structure lines of relief basing on the regular model involve advanced analysis of potential surface flow accumulation. The research applied a modified D8 algorithm implemented in GM Grid 5,2 module, which is a functional extension of GeoMedia Professional package by Intergraph. To establish erosion network (drainage lines) it is vital to determine a threshold of accumulated flow, over which drainage network becomes a stream. Although the process is fully automatic, subjective setting of such threshold significantly varies the results. Authors of the concept of so-called extended Morse-Smale's decomposition (E. Danovaro L. DeFloriani, P. Magillo, M. Mesmoudi, E. Puppo 2003) claim that generalization of automatically determined structure lines allows for hierarchical DTM generalization, preserving significant topological relations. The research results do not support that hypothesis. Because the actual structure lines were not taken into consideration, in the process of standard Delaneuy's triangulation there appear triangles with edges crossing structure lines. It appears that although DTM generalization (or its hierarchical composition) can be successfully executed through the generalization of structure lines, the automatization of the process of determining these lines does not yield expected results. The need to determine structure lines through direct surveying, e.g. with photogrammetric techniques is therefore justified. Basing on thus determined ..skeleton" it is possible to properly generalize the model of relief, while preserving significant topological relations.

The article discusses selected contemporary methods of multi-feature data and shows their possible applications in cartography. Graphic information processing described by J. Bertin and principal components analysis created by H. Hotelling, which enables the transfer of results from n-dimensional space to three-, two-, and even one-dimensional space, are examples of non-standard classification in cartography. An examples of spatial data classification using L.A. Zadeh's theory of fuzzy sets is presented. In this classification particuler objects belong to different classes, with various levels of subordination. The article draws special attention to possibility of using neural networks (NN) as a tool for unsupervised classification of spatial data. NN using systems are widely applied in branches of knowledge, which research prediction and classification. From the point of view of source data classification, it is interesting to use NN prepared by unsupervised learning. A so called Kohonen's network is an example of such structure. During the learning process this network does not receive feedback on the correctness of particular answers. Not knowing the expected output information, the network selflearns to recognize data structure. The outer surface of the network creates a, so called, Kohonen topological map, which projects the relations of similarity between the features of analyzed objects into one- or two-dimensional space. The article presents two examples of practical applications of Kohonen's network in classification of multi-feature spatial data. Presented multi-feature data classification methods, despite high differentiation of algorithms, show similar approach to the discussed problem. Self-learning of Kohonen's network, like permutation method, consists in revealing the structure of source data. Application of neural networks, similarly to the method of principal components, allows to reduce the dimension of the space of attributes. In neural networks, as in the classification method basing on theory of fuzzy sets, the final interpretation should be preceded by an estimation of the level of activation of particular neurons. Application of one-dimensional out surface of Kohonen's net-work makes it possible to directly present the classification results on a thematic map, which is optimal from a cartographic point of view.

The concept of hierarchical model of relief is a logical conclusion of the idea of a multi representation topographic database. It permits a combined analysis of all the components of the environment and uncovers new possibilities in preserving the integrity of spatial constraints between the model of terrain and other thematic layers (primarily river network). It is possible due to, among other factors, defining of spatial relations between particular objects and object classes. It also provides a new way of looking at the process of relief generalization understood as an approximation of the relief model preserving topological relations, and not as a simplification of contour lines. The basic feature of the generalization of relief should be the preservation of its structure (morphological skeleton). What seems important for the construction of multi scale DTM is not only a hierarchical approach to relief modelling but also the method of approximation of source data. Simple algorithms of DTM generalization such as the conversion of TIN model into regular GRID structure of certain spatial resolution and the application of global filtration allow for a relatively low reduction of complexity of the source model. The proposed concept of hierarchical model preparation through iterative elimination of points from the data source combines elements of local filtration and heuristic approach. In the conducted research it was assumed, that while building the hierarchical structure of DTM model one should define relief structural lines and assign to them appropriate numeric weights. The analysis bases on the division of source data of the model into structural and mass points. In the process of generalization the points are removed according to the combined evaluation of several criteria: their vertical significance (established locally), their density (horizontal significance), and for structural points also by the weight of structural lines and local curvature of those line (established horizontally as well as vertically). The selection of relevance of particular criteria is fully parameterized, permitting a free assignment of weight factors. Hierarchical (multi scale) model of relief can be adapted to the scale of presentation chosen by the user, while retaining the relief structure relevant for that level of generalization. Suggested algorithms make it possible to preserve significant topological relations between structural elements of relief.

In this paper, an automated measurement system was proposed that uses a probe hung below a remotely controlled balloon to measure parameters of the acoustic field in the whole volume of a room. The study was conducted to estimate distortions that such system may cause in the acoustic field at the measurement point. The most significant source of the distortions will be the buoyancy element - one large balloon or a number of smaller ones. This paper considers different spatial configurations of spherical balloons with regards to alterations they cause in the acoustic pressure levels measured below them. Interior of a room without and with a group of spherical balloons was modeled using the boundary element method. Using a larger number of smaller spheres instead of a single large one did not significantly reduce the related distortions. However, using two spheres slightly decreased distortions when the distance between the balloons and the recording point was relatively small.

Opis:
The identity of cartography is determined by the manner of defining and interpreting the concept of “map”. However, the term has not been unequivocally articulated as yet. There are many different definitions of maps available in literature - from those viewing map as a scaled-down, planar, graphic representation of geographical space, to those that equate a map to a specific model that is independent of the form of its presentation. Interestingly enough, the basis of such universal treatment of the map concept can be found already in the scientific works from the 1960s. Although contemporary definitions do not limit a map to a single form of presentation, such over-simplification still persists. The issue has become very relevant given the rapidly increasing number of diverse geospatial applications designed to access spatial data and present it in diverse forms. So far, however, there are no clear rules for categorizing a given representation as cartographic or non-cartographic. And this often gives rise to various misconceptions, e.g. regarding the role and responsibilities of cartography as science and practical activity. According to the authors of the article, a map is an ordered informational structure shaped by the years of practical experience and research in the field of cartography. Map arising in the process of cartographic modelling is understood as one of many possible models of the portrayed space. The model is formed in the course of thought processes, including abstraction and generalization in particular. Creation of the model involves the use of symbolism that can be decoded by the recipient. This does not mean, however, that the process of symbolization is limited exclusively to graphical representations. Map is also a tool for presenting spatial information in a visual, digital or tactile way. Therefore, the essence of map is determined by its “model” nature rather than the format of the cartographic message. The authors have assumed that map is formed in the process of cartographic modelling and certain properties of the process can be defined, that distinguish it from other methods of spatial modelling. The properties recognized as characteristic for cartographic modelling include space portraying that enables identification of types of objects and phenomena, describing spatial relationships between objects, as well as their positioning in the applied reference system. In the authors’ opinion, properties of cartographic modelling include also the intentional application of a specific level of generalization determined by the objective of the map, aware authorship of the message, unambiguity of communication and symbolization based on knowledge. The proposed approach should facilitate the classification of different products designed to represent space.

Opis:
The issue of line simplification is one of the fundamental problems of generalisation of geographical information, and the proper parameterisation of simplification algorithms is essential for the correctness and cartographic quality of the results. The authors of this study have attempted to apply computational intelligence methods in order to create a cartographic knowledge base that would allow for non-standard parameterisation of WEA (Weighted Effective Area) simplification algorithm. The aim of the conducted research was to obtain two independent methods of non-linear weighting of multi-dimensional regression function that determines the “importance” of specific points on the line and their comparison to each other. The first proposed approach consisted in the preparation of a set of cartographically correct examples constituting a basis for teaching a neural network, while the other one consisted in defining inference rules using fuzzy logic. The obtained results demonstrate that both methods have great potential, although the proposed solutions require detailed parameterisation taking into account the specificity of geometric variety of the source data.

The paper raises an issue of essence of cartography studied in the context of a dynamically developing geospatial technology. It focuses on cartographic modelling issues, which were analysed in terms of its fundamental features. At the same time, a number of other reality (non-cartographic) models were selected and the assessment of their features specific to cartographic modelling was carried out. In this way, a unique set of features has been defined that distinguishes a cartographic modelling itself from other representations of reality, such as imaging of space in a computer game, modelling a climate system or in the form of an artistic image. Conducted analyses and considerations moved the authors towards recognition of cartographic modelling as a unique process of portraying the geographical space, which is also the nucleus of the cartography domain.

Opis:
The paper presents the generalization methodology for data contained in digital terrain model (DTM) for the purpose of relief presentation on new topographic maps. An appropriate generalization process of digital terrain model is especially significant for geographic information systems (GIS). It is particularly important for reliable spatial analysis, therefore, to retain real position of characteristic points defining key landforms. It was decided that the proposed generalization process of digital terrain models was based on the hybrid structure of DTM generation from the most accurate height data in geodetic and cartographic resource. For this reason special application was developed which uses: an extraction of characteristic points and regularly distributed complementary points, as well as an extraction of structural lines to create a secondary DTM during generalization. The implementation of the whole process was carried out in Model Builder in ArcGIS 10. DTM created for a selected level of generalization was used then to generate contours for an appropriate scale, presenting the terrain on topographic maps. Two data source was used in presented research i.e. DTM from aerial laser scanning obtained in ISOK project and DTM created from photogrammetric data acquired in LPIS project. The proposed algorithm was tested on five areas representing different types of terrain: old glacial and young glacial landscape, low and high mountains and urban area. The results were compared for both data source. The statistical parameters were also calculated for the selected level of DTM generalization with regard to the raw data. For each test area DTM from LPIS and ISOK projects were positively generalized to hybrid structure which allowed for effective contours creation and acceptable relief representation on topographic maps in selected scale. Only few percent of initial data guaranteed appropriate cartographic accuracy in relief representation in result. As a conclusion authors indicate that full automation procedure of DTM generalization is not possible for whole Poland because of large morphometric diversity of our country. Presented research proved that achieving optimal results and satisfied cartographic accuracy can be obtained with usage of high resolution height data, exposed to the generalization algorithms, and supplemented by the current data from topographic data bases (TBD, BDOT).

Background: There is a growing interest in the application of non-invasive clinical tools allowing one to assess the endothelial function, preceding atherosclerosis. The precision in estimating of the artery Flow Mediated Vasodilation (FMD) using standard 10-12 MHz linear array probes does not exceed 0.2 mm, far beyond that required. Methods: We have introduced a wide-band, high frequency 25-30 MHz, Golay encoded wobbling type imaging to measure dilation of the radial artery instead of the brachial one. 18 young volunteers, and 4 volunteers with cardiac events history, were examined. In the second approach 20 MHz linear scanning combined with 20 MHz pulsed Doppler attached to the linear array was used. The radial artery FMD was normalized using shear rate at the radial artery wall. Results and Conclusions: For the “healthy” group, the FMD resulting from reactive hyperemia response was over 20%; while in the “atherosclerotic” group, the FMD was at least twice as small, not exceeding 10%. The shear rate (SR) normalized FMDSR was in the range from 7.8 to 9.9 in arbitrary units, while in patients with minor cardiac history FMDSR was clearly lower, 6.8 to 7.6. The normalized FMDSR of radial artery RARR can be an alternative to the brachial FMD where the precision of measurements is lower and the diameter dilation does not exceed 7-10%.

Acoustocerebrography (ACG) is a set of techniques designed to capture states of human brain tissue, and its changes. It is based on noninvasive measurements of various parameters obtained by analyzing an ultrasound pulse emitted through the human’s skull. ACG and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) results were compared in a clinical study assessment of focal white-matter-lesions (WML) in the brains of patients with asymptomatic atrial fibrillation (AAF). The clinical study included 55 patients (age 66.1 ± 6.7 years). According to MRI data, the patients were assigned into four groups depending on the number of lesions: L0 - 0 to 4 lesions, L5 - 5 to 9 lesions, L10 - 10 to 29 lesions, and L30 - 30 or more lesions. As a result, it has been concluded that the ACG method could clearly differentiate the groups L0 (with 0 ÷ 4 lesions) and L30 (with more than 30 lesions) of WML patients. Fisher’s Exact Test shows that this correlation is highly significant (p < 0.001). ACG seems to be a new, effective, method for detecting WML for patients with AAF and can become increasingly useful in both diagnosing, and in stratifying, them. This, in turn, can be helpful in individualizing their treatment, so that the risk of strokes may become essentially reduced.
