Opis:
The purpose of the investigation was to establish the relationship between beliefs about pain control and pain coping strategies and predictors of pain coping strategies. 103 patients with rheumatoid arthritis participated in the study – 59 were women, 43 men. The mean of age was 38.1. Beliefs about Pain Control (BPCQ) prepared by Skevington and Pain Coping Strategies Questionnaire developed by Rosenstiel and Keefe were used in the study. The results indicated on the differentiation in choice of pain coping strategies dependently from beliefs about pain control and revealed predictors for two pain coping strategies. Predictor of diverting attention appeared internal control and predictors of catastrophizing appeared all three kinds of pain control.

Opis:
The purpose of the study was to investigate to what extent personal resources such as self-esteem, self-efficacy beliefs and health locus of control may predict coping styles with stress in children aged 11–12. 179 pupils participated in the study. 4 methods were used: scale How do you cope – to measure 3 coping styles, Kompos scale – to measure self-efficacy beliefs and Health locus of control scale. Self-efficacy appeared a predictor of all 3 analysed coping styles in examined children.

Opis:
Objectives The purpose of the research is to investigate the mediating role of coping strategies for stress in the relation between resiliency and post-traumatic growth in a group of paramedics. Material and Methods Data of 80 paramedics who have experienced traumatic event at their worksites was analyzed. The age range of the participants was 21–67 years old (mean: 35.47, standard deviation: 10.21). The Post-traumatic Growth Inventory, the Assessment Resiliency Scale and Inventory to Measure Coping Strategies for Stress – Mini-Cope were used in the study. Results Venting of negative emotions and denial appeared as suppressors in analyzing the relation, while planning plays mediating role between resiliency and post-traumatic growth. Conclusions In the process of post-traumatic growth, both avoidance and problem-focused strategies are important. Moreover, controlling such strategies as Venting and Denial may result in a high level of posttraumatic growth in the study group. The data supports that resiliency may have direct or indirect impact on post-traumatic changes. The results allow to understand the mechanisms of resiliency better, that relationship with post-traumatic growth is ambiguous.

Opis:
The study was undertaken to determine the extent of positive changes in adolescents who have experienced negative life events and establish the role of coping strategies in this process. The research group consists of 130 adolescents, of which 54% said that had experienced negative life event. 60 persons were included in the examined group, of which 56.7% were boys. The age of teenagers ranged 16-17 years (M = 16.53; SD = 0.50). Personality Growth Questionnaire for the assessment of positive changes and Coping Responses Inventory – youth (CRI-48) to measure coping strategies with stress (both dispositional and situational version) were used in the study. The results indicated that slightly more than 28% of respondents reveal high level of personal growth. Significantly larger are the changes related to appreciation of life than self-perception and relations with others. Situational strategies appeared to significantly relate with personal growth. Taking actions aimed at solving the problem appeared to be the predictor of positive changes in self-perception. Seeking social support and alternative reinforcements are predictors of changes in relations with others.

Opis:
Background Professionals working with trauma victims can experience both negative and positive effects following exposure to secondary trauma. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between secondary traumatic stress (STS), secondary posttraumatic growth (SPTG) and cognitive coping strategies and to establish the mediating role of cognitive coping strategies in the relationship between STS and SPTG. Material and Methods A group of 500 professionals working with trauma survivors were surveyed. The Secondary Traumatic Stress Inventory, the Secondary Posttraumatic Growth Inventory and the Cognitive Processing of Trauma Scale was used. Results The results indicated that 29% of professionals demonstrate a high intensity of STS, and nearly 34% exhibit a high level of SPTG. Denial and regret were positively correlated with STS; positive cognitive restructuring, resolution/acceptance and downward comparison were positively related to SPTG. Two cognitive coping strategies, i.e., positive cognitive restructuring and downward comparison, were found to act as mediators in the relationship between STS and SPTG. Conclusions Understanding the effects of secondary exposure to trauma and the coping responses of professionals working with trauma survivors will support the development of prevention and intervention actions aimed at protecting them from the deleterious impact of exposure to secondary trauma at work and promoting secondary posttraumatic growth.

Opis:
Wstęp: Celem podjętych badań było ustalenie roli strategii radzenia sobie ze stresem w rozwoju po traumie w grupie ratowników medycznych. Materiał i metody: Analizie poddano wyniki badań przeprowadzonych u 80 ratowników medycznych, którzy doświadczyli zdarzenia traumatycznego w związku z wykonywaną pracą. Wiek badanych mieścił się w zakresie 21-67 lat (średnia: 35,47; odchylenie standardowe: 10,21). W badaniach wykorzystano Inwentarz Potraumatycznego Rozwoju oraz Inwentarz do Pomiaru Radzenia Sobie ze Stresem (Posttraumatic Growth Inventory and Inventory to Measure Coping Strategies with Stress - Mini-Cope). Med. Pr. 2014;65(2):209–217
Background: The purpose of the research was to investigate the role of coping strategies with stress in posttraumatic growth in a group of medical rescue workers. Material and Methods: The data on 80 medical rescuers who had experienced traumatic event in their worksite were analyzed. The age of the participants ranged from 21 to 67 years (M = 35.47; SD = 10.21). The Posttraumatic Growth Inventory and Inventory to Measure Coping Strategies with Stress - Mini-Cope were used in the study. Results: The results revealed that the strategy "turning to religion" plays the major role in posttraumatic growth. Conclusions: In the process of emerging positive changes posttraumatic growth avoidance strategies seem to play more important role than strategies focused on the problem itself.
