- The paper provides an analysis of the beginnings of the series of: American letters of Cyprian Norwid to Maria Trębicka (1853–1854) and the letters of Stanisław Wyspiański to his ‘Venetian’ friend, Stanisław Lack (1905). Both cycles, according to the author of the paper are original and exceptional representations of ‘dramatic correspondence’ (the original Polish phrase ‘korespondencja dramatyczna’ was coined by Stefania Skwarczyńska). The persuasive character of the utterances of both artists has been pointed out in the analysis. This has been achieved by, on the one hand, a subtle interplay of the devices of the poetic function (metaphors, metonymies, similes, allegories) and on the other, through an explicit attempt to strike a ‘pact’ with an addressee, which forces the strict rules of the exchange of letters (such as regular replies and the destruction of the letters in the case of the suspension of correspondence). The authors of the letters, sharing with their addressees the experiences of the lonely fight for the real-life and artistic fulfilment (which is accompanied from the beginning by the premonition of failure) in the codes of metaphors, concealments and evocation of archetypical figures and places, hide, what at the core seems to matter the most for them – the question of their own transiency and death.
