Opis:
Emotions, as recognizable only through experience and belonging to direct and extra-conceptual knowledge (a person feels something), are formed into indirect knowledge, rational and of linguistic nature. Our direct experience of what we feel is cognitively and linguistically moulded into lexicalsemantic definitions of a particular emotion. Truth conditional definitions are given preference here. The research on such definitions can imply the following types of definitions: propositional definitions by explicating the cause of an emotion (Wierzbicka 1971) and by prototype effects (Wierzbicka 1999), metonymic definitions (Davitz 1969, Mikołajczuk 1997, 2009), synonymous definitions (Mikołajczuk 1997, 2009, Jasielska 2013), definitions in the form of conceptualisations of emotions (Nowakowska-Kempna 1995, 2000, Mikołajczuk 1997, 2009) and in the form of the linguistic portrait of a concept (Apresjan 1994).

The high number of Silesian dialects as a source of abundance in the region

Opis:
The diversity of the contemporary Silesian dialects corresponds to the division adopted by K. Nitsch (1960), apart from the non-existence of the Lach dialects that are extinct in this area. However, the dialects present in Silesia have become richer by the Southern Borderlands dialect, which is used mainly by repatriates living in villages (and small towns) in the area stretching from the Katowice to the Wrocław regions. The linguistic analysis of a given dialect is still determined based on the inhabitants’ speech, that is relying on the usage and function criterion. This opens the prospect of studying language by means of the paradigms applying the usage-based models of language, such as cognitivism, sociolinguistics, and dialectology. The most commonly used variation of Polish is mixed, where the dialect intertwines with the general language and which is characterised by stylistic diversity (e.g. the colloquial and scientific styles); hence, the application of language usage-based paradigms, which enable the presentation of language in sociocultural processes (e.g. dromology, mediamorphosis, and glocalisation, i.e. globalisation and localisation combined) is important in the research of this kind. When determining dialectal characteristics, E. Rosch’s prototype theory is also useful, as it permits the detection of canonical (prototypical) features of a given dialect, usually phonetic ones, which allow its distinction from another dialect by criteria. This is because the traditional division of Silesian dialects has undergone certain transformations concerned with a shift of Silesian dialects’ influences with respect to Lesser and Greater Polish ones, expansion of the mixed area at the borderline between dialects, establishment of mixed Polish, and reduction of the number of people speaking a dialect only. The diversity of dialects as a prestigious variation of Polish in Silesia attests to the abundance of regional experiences of the lands and requires a further holistic research of the language transformations occurring in Silesia.

Opis:
The author analyses prepositional constructions along the lines of Goldberg’s cognitive construction grammar. The paper starts with a discussion of Goldberg’s definition of a construction and the main theoretical assumptions of her approach. The semantic analysis of a construction is based on its contextual meaning as related to the speech event and then subsequently related to its conceptual frame, that is, its predicate-argument structure. Such an analysis of prepositional constructions allows a much wider scope of a construction than has been so far considered. It also allows the analyst to identify an abundance of a series of phrasemes which have not been accounted for even when analysing a single particular preposition (the Polish preposition ‘w’: ‘in’) in dictionaries or the studies of prepositions.

Opis:
The metaphorical title A Picture Painted in Phraseology is meant to refer to the created picture of EMOTIONS, though the material used here is not paint, but the phrasemes employed in the description of EMOTIONS. By default, the phraseology of EMOTIONS is destined to create their picture. This picture is usually conventional since phrasemes are linguistically well entrenched and conventional. The correlation between the appearance of an experiencer, the picture of his or her face and behaviour, and his or her emotional state becomes a basis for the creation of numerous phrasemes, which are indicative of this correlation. The picture exists both in language and cognition. Phrasemes produce a specific picture of an experiencer who undergoes an emotion in such a way that one may argue that a picture is actually painted in phraseology. The final result is the picture of FACE and BODY, displaying joy, sadness, fear or surprise, which is exclusively characteristic of a particular emotion.
