Opis:
Precision surface assemblies can be found in the two locations in a fuel system of a diesel engine. These parts are the pumping section in an injection pump and the injector nozzles. In this paper the authors present the results of surface topography measurements of precise surface assemblies of some fuel injectors. The measurements have been made with the atomic force microscope (AFM) NT-206. The results of surface topography measurements were presented in the form of 2D and 3D images and also as surface roughness profiles in some selected cross-sections of the investigated surfaces. It has been also shown cumulative roughness height distribution and roughness height distribution as well as Minkowski volume (first Minkowski functional). After scanning the surface on the atomic force microscope, the obtained data were processed with the SurfaceXplorer ® 1.311 and Gwyddion 2.35 software. The study concerned some new injector nozzles and also injector nozzles after a certain time of operation. The side and the conical precise surface assembly of the injector nozzle body and needle were tested. The atomic force microscope NT-206 allows to perform a surface scan of the sample with maximum dimensions of 32x32 μm and a maximum height of roughness ± 1 μm. Scanned area was divided into 256x256 measurement points, while the measurement was carried out in a static (contact) mode. The results presented in this paper also includes the calculated values of Ra, Sa (roughness average) and Rq, Sq (root mean square roughness) surface roughness parameters and the value of the skewness Ssk (Rsk), kurtosis Sku (Rku) and maximum distance between the lowest valley and the highest peak of investigated surface – Rt. The obtained data allow evaluating the degree and type of wear of tested surfaces on the micro-scale.

Opis:
In this paper authors present results of measurements of slide journal bearings surface topography measured with a profilometer and an atomic force microscope (AFM). Surface topography of investigated bearings (i.e. journals and sleeves) was measured using the Hommeltester T8000- R60 profilometer. The results of these measurements give information about micro-grooves dimensions and location. Measurements of surface topography were made for journals and sleeves of slide journal micro-bearings from personal computers fans, with the Atomic Force Microscope NT-206 produced in MTM in Minsk, Republic of Belarus. The results of measurements of surface topography were presented in the form of surface topography maps, threedimensional graphs and some examples of selected cross-sections of investigated surfaces in the form of profile graphs. The values of profile roughness parameters Ra and Rq and the distance between maximum peak height and maximum valley depth are presented as well. The application SurfaceXplorer registered trademark was used for processing and visualization of the data obtained from AFM NT-206, which besides from generating 2D, 3D and profile diagrams, was used to calculate and draw graphs of height distribution. In this research authors used two identical sets of micro-bearings. The investigated bearings are: a) Kama Flow SP0825FDB12H fan with grooved surface of bearing sleeve, b) Xilence Case fan which sleeve surface was without grooves. First set of that micro-bearings functioned for a year at rated RPM continuously (i.e. 24 hours a day). Second set of the same micro-bearings also functioned for a year at rated RPM, but in intermittent mode (i.e. 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off). On the surfaces of studied micro-bearings some microgrooves can be found in form of herringbone, with depth about 1-2..m and width 100-150..m. Received information about microgrooves geometry will help to develop proper theory of hydrodynamic lubrication for micro-bearings with microgrooves and allows determining how the mode of operating affects on the wear of co-operating surfaces.

Opis:
The article presents the experimental results of investigation of the pumps shaft surface made of stainless steel after burnishing process. The process of burnishing shafts proposed here aims at increasing the service durability of marine pump shafts of seawater installations, which should give economic benefits in comparison with traditional methods. Burnishing process enables the achievement of high smoothness of machined surface together with the surface layer hardening. This process has been performed in industrial experience on universal machine tools and on CNC machines but it is regarded as plastic tooling. Therefore, the final formation of dimensions and service properties with the use of burnishing constitutes a chipless and dustless treatment, which allows for ranking burnishing among ecological tooling methods. The properties of the surface layers determine the tribological properties of the shaft. The methods of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and nanoindentation (NI) were used. The morphology of the changed layers formed by plastic deforming of steel during burnishing treatment was investigated on micro- and nanolevel by SEM and AFM after 1, 2, 3 and 4 passed of burnishing tool. The values of microhardness and Young´s modulus were measured on the shaft cross section from the surface till the 50 – 300 μm depth. The presence of the soft changed layer on the hardened shaft surface after burnishing process determines the decrease of the coefficient of friction during exploitation.
