Pueri Cantores - Opis:
- It was exactly 50 years ago that the Instruction Musicam Sacram was officially approved to specify the Church teachings on music. The Instruction was a special supplementary to the 6th chapter of Sacrosanctum Concilium. We cannot and must not ignore this document and it seems that after 50 years it is now a perfect moment to discuss its resonance in the world. As the Ecclesiastical Assistant since 2004 and then, since 2009 the President of the International Federation of Pueri Cantores, thus visiting and talking with my associates in 42 world countries where our Federation is operating, I feel entitled to talk about the image of choral music from this perspective on the Universal Church. That is why I am going to focus on this resonance with respect to church music as performed by the choirs of Pueri Cantores during liturgy and concerts in the countries where they function. I would like to start with the presentation of the position, aims and the role of choirs in accordance with the Musicam Sacram Instruction, then I am going to provide the examples to illustrate how Pueri Cantores realize the above on particular continents. My idea is to shed some light on Pueri Cantores perspective (or rather prospects) for the future. The fundamental thing for the future of choral music in the Church is education of choirmasters. This postulate seems to be the pressing need. Of course, it ought to stressed that there are in the world, particularly in Europe, good universities which provide excellent music education in the faculties of choral conductorship or church music, but there is still quite a lot to be done in this matter. The next crucial postulate for the future is a kinder attitude towards the activity of church choirs and acknowledging the role of the Church in liturgical music by particular supervisors of dioceses. It is true that in many dioceses this issue is properly tackled ith, but we need some more holistic and systemized consideration within the entire Church.
