Opis:
The objective of the study was to investigate variability of chemical features of upper horizons in forest soils as well as confirmation of collecting the mixed sample that is supposed to describe the soil conditions more effectively. The lowest variability (ca 10%) was observed for pH in H2O and KCl as well as C/N ratio. The highest coefficient of variance exceeded 100% (Ca content). For almost all analysed chemical parameters, the results obtained for mixed sample (average of 5 samples systematically distributed within the study area) are in ±1 standard deviation range from the average of 25 individual samples.

Opis:
We analysed quality of water from the intakes in the Myślenice Forest District (S Poland). 8 springs were selected: 4 were located in the Natura 2000 area on the Mt. Polica and another 4 originated from the Harbutowice surroundings. Additionally water from 3 places on streams was gathered: 2 points were located in the ‘Las Gościba’ nature reserve and 1 in the water intake for the residents of Sułkowice municipality. Water samples were collected at the beginning of each month in the year 2016. The water temperature and flow rate were measured in the field. The hydrogen ion activity (pH), electrolytic conductivity (PEW) as well as the content of NH4+, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl–, NO3–, SO4 2–, PO4 3– and F– were determined with Dionex 5000 ion chromatograph. We also marked the content of P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Cr, Cd, Ni and Pb using the ICP−OES emission spectrometer. All analyzes were carried out in the Laboratory of Geochemistry of Forest Environment and Areas Designated for Reclamation of the Forest Faculty of the University of Agriculture in Krakow. Water quality classification was made due to the tested properties in accordance with Regulation of the Minister of the Environment of 21st July 2016 on the classification of the state of surface water bodies and environmental quality standards for priority substances. The study confirmed differences in electric conductivity and the content of NH4+, SO4 2–, NO3 – due to the development of alimentation areas and the location of water collection.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of deforestation caused by environmental pollution on the chemical composition of stream waters draining the small catchments located in the Skrzyczne massif (Beskid Śląski, southern Poland). In the 1950−60s this area was subjected to heavy anthropogenic pressure with excessive deposition of sulfur and nitrogen compounds. It resulted in the damage to the stands and deforestation of the ridge fragments of the studied area. The study was conducted in the catchment of the Malinowski Stream and its two subcatchments: forested and deforested in 2013. Waters of the studied streams characterized by low conductivity and mineralization. In the ridge subcatchments they were slightly acidic and in the main catchment – slightly alkaline. In all catchments anions were predominated by sulfates – with the largest in the deforested catchment (31% mval/L). Also nitrates had very large share in the structure of the chemical composition of water, particularly in the forested catchment (15% mval/L). Interestingly, there were low levels of bicarbonates, particularly in the ridge catchments, with their share lower than sulfates and nitrates. Cations in all streams were predominated by calcium. The structure of the chemical composition of water of the Malinowski Stream, expressed by the average share of individual ions was as follows: SO4−HCO3−NO3−Cl−F−Ca−Na−Mg−K−NH4, and in the case of streams draining small ridge catchments: – SO4−NO3−HCO3−Cl−F−Ca−Na−Mg−K−NH4. Conductivity of water decreased together with increased water levels in streams during floods. In the deforested catchment this decrease was more evident. The reaction of nitrate concentration to the increase in water level was however different, as in the stream draining the forested catchment it decreased sharply, while in the deforested catchment it decreased slightly or remained at the similar level. In the dry periods the chemical composition of waters of the examined streams were subject to far less change than during the floods, with the changes of e.g. conductivity being much higher in the stream draining the forested catchment.

Opis:
The aim of the present research conducted in the Beskid Śląski was to search for an appropriate, alternative to classic way to regenerate the forest at high mountain altitudes. An attempt was made, therefore, at regeneration of these areas using the group method that imitates the natural formation of spruce biogroups in the forest. It was concluded that the choice of place for planting should entail the time of snow cover disappearance as well as the differentiation of microsites, kind of protection and plant cover. The assessment performed favours the biogroup method of setting up spruce cultures in higher mountain altitudes, especially in areas close to the mountain top.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to apply the forest soil trophic index (ITGL) in the assessment of post−agricultural soil under naturally regenerated silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) stands. The study was conducted in Mazowieckie region (central Poland) in 10 locations (tab. 1). In each location we established 4 study plots with naturally regenerated silver birch of different age. The age of the investigated stands ranged from 2 to 17 years. On each study plot samples from three upper soil horizons (0−5 cm, 5−15 cm and 15−50 cm) were collected for laboratory analysis. The following characteristics were determined in the soil samples: pH, organic carbon (C) and total nitrogen (N) content, particle size and the content of exchangeable base cations (Ca, Mg, Na and K). These soil characteristics were on used for ITGL calculation. Chemical properties of soils under silver birch regeneration varied with regard to trees age, whereas physical attributes turned to be rather stabile over the time (tab. 2). According to ITGL value investigated soils were classified as eutrophic. It is probably the effect of high base cations content, which is a result of systematic fertilization during the long term agricultural use. The insignificantly different ITGL values for the studied soils (tab. 3) indicated their similarity in terms of site productivity potential and soil−geological characteristics. The soil properties, especially the quality of soil organic matter described with C/N ratio, improved several years after the cessation of agricultural activity and spontaneous afforestation. The obtained results indicate that silver birch can be used in the stand composition on post−agricultural areas.
