Opis:: It does not often happen in the history of urban development that conditions in which towns are functioning are radically changed. Uniejów on the river Warta, with a population of a little above 3000, is one of such urban centres – its development path is now taking a new turn due to intensive development of tourism and recreation functions. The changes that are taking place in Uniejów are primarily affecting its residents. To find out their opinions on the new situation a survey has been conducted on a random sample of the inhabitants of the city and its region. The responses received show that generally the perception of the changes is positive – 100% of the respondents appreciate the improved appearance of the city and 76% point to increased economic growth. On the other hand, there are opinions indicating limited participation of the inhabitants in the success of the city – there are persons who feel to be affected negatively or not at all. This may be due to the fact that Uniejów has only very recently started the new development trajectory and it is too early for all the residents to feel its impact.

Opis:: The article discusses the basis for development of spa and recreational functions in Uniejów. The town has favourable natural (geothermal water, climate) and historical conditions (medieval town center). Currently, in connection with the above-mentioned assets, a new morphological unit intended for leasure activities is developing in the left- bank part of Uniejów. Maintaining the balance in the development of the emerging left- bank section and the right-bank (of medieval origin) section of Uniejów seems to be the right path to ensuring sustainable growth of the town. The spatial policy and spatial planning of Uniejów should be oriented to promoting the development of both parts of the town to obtain the synergy effect.

Opis:: Tourism and recreation are a very topical issue in Uniejów – a city which only recently introduced and developed these functions. This article is devoted to the tourists-residents relationship. Apart from a review of selected theoretical issues it also presents findings of surveys which examined the attitudes of the inhabitants of Uniejów and its region to the growing numbers of tourists, and their opinions about the effect of the new functions on the situation of the city. The present level of development of Uniejów's tourist functions as measured by the Baretje-Deffert index is low. The city is currently in the growth stage (according to Butler's stages of tourist areas evolution). This is in line with the positive attitude of the resident population to tourists. The respondents to the questionnaire survey reported good or fairly good relations with tourists visiting the city. Also, the majority of Uniejów's inhabitants have a positive opinion about the influence of the changes taking place in the city on the quality of life. However, some negative effects of increased tourist traffic have also been poined out, such as higher prices of goods in the shops.

Opis:: Artykuł zawiera wyniki badań nad konfiguracją przestrzeni małych miast wschodniej Wielkopolski. Postępowanie badawcze oraz wnioskowanie oparte zostało na teorii i narzędziach składni przestrzeni (space syntax). Dotychczasowe badania utrzymane w tym nurcie wskazują, że ujęcie charakterystyczne dla składni przestrzeni wprowadza wartościowe wątki do badań nad funkcjonowaniem społeczeństw miejskich. Dowiedziono m.in. związków pomiędzy konfiguracyjnymi własnościami przestrzeni a ruchem pieszym, segregacją przestrzenną mieszkańców oraz lokalizacją przedsiębiorstw i aktywnością gospodarczą. Na arenie polskiej takie podejście do morfologii osiedli miejskich jest stosunkowo rzadkie. Prezentowany artykuł stanowi próbę wypełnienia tej luki. Przedstawione rozważania koncentrują się na konfiguracji przestrzeni najmniejszych miast wschodniej Wielkopolski oraz ocenie zmian ich rozplanowania w okresie ostatnich 100 lat, w świetle integracji, jednej z kluczowych miar składni przestrzeni. Analizy wykazały, że w rozplanowaniu badanych miast zaszły w analizowanym okresie istotne zmiany. Niemal wszystkie badane ośrodki rozwinęły swoje układy, niezależnie od zmiany stanu ludnościowego. Skala przeobrażeń przestrzennych nawiązuje do sytuacji demograficznej, zwłaszcza w miastach, które powiększyły swój potencjał ludnościowy.
The article contains the results of research on the spatial configuration of small towns in eastern Greater Poland. The research process and conclusions are based on the theory and tools of space syntax. The studies conducted in this field so far indicate that the approach typical of space syntax introduces significant threads in the studies on the functioning of urban societies. The connections between the configurational properties of space and pedestrian traffic, spatial segregation of residents, the location of businesses as well as the level of economic activities have been confirmed. This approach to the morphology of urban estates is relatively rare in the Polish arena. This article constitutes an attempt at filling this gap. It focuses on the spatial configuration of the smallest towns in eastern Greater Poland and attempts to assess the changes that occurred in their plans in the last 100 years in light of integration, one of the key measures of space syntax. Analyses have shown that there have been crucial changes to the studied towns in the analysed period of time. The layouts of almost all centres have developed, regardless of the changes to population level. The scale of spatial changes is connected to the demographic condition, especially in the towns which increased their population potential.

Opis:: Artykuł zawiera wyniki analizy konfiguracyjnej układu urbanistycznego Szadku (obszaru miasta lokacyjnego i jego bezpośredniego otoczenia) z zastosowaniem narzędzi składni przestrzeni (space syntax). Przedstawione badania ujawniły przestrzenie kluczowe dla funkcjonowania miasta w kontekście konfiguracyjnym. Są to m.in. dwa rdzenie integracji: jeden o charakterze pasmowym, położony na obszarze miasta lokacyjnego z przedłużeniem w kierunku struktur Nowego Miasta, drugi o charakterze węzłowym, istniejący na obszarze przypuszczalnego położenia struktur przedlokacyjnych tego miasta. Zidentyfikowane zostały także przestrzenie istotne dla utrzymania sprawności systemu miejskiego w kontekście ruchu pieszego.
The article presents the results of analysis of spatial configurations of Szadek (area of the chartered town and its immediate neighbourhood) conducted with the use of space syntax instruments. The study identified areas of key importance for the functioning of the town in configurative context. They include two cores of integration: one having a belt character, situated in the area of the chartered town and stretching towards the Nowe Miasto structures , and the other , of nodal type, existing in the area of the supposed location of pre-charter structures of this town. Areas essential for effective functioning of the pedestrian traffic have also been identified.
