Opis:
This paper looks into the impact of free grazing by sheep and horses on the chemical and biological properties of soils in the partial protection zone of the Roztocze National Park. The study sampled three different types of pastureland in the area: pastures for sheep, horses and for combined grazing by sheep and horses. Compared to an ungrazed reference pasture, free grazing significantly stimulated the activity of enzymes which catalyze the transformation of organic matter (dehydrogenases, phosphatases and ureases) and it also positively influenced other chemical properties of the soils. Among the soils under free-grazing management, the pasture grazed to horses underwent the most advantageous changes in terms of the eco-chemical status of the soil.

Opis:
The study objective is to assess the threats and protection methods of xerothermic grasslands of Festuco-Brometea class and other rare and protected plant species in Stawska Góra nature reserve. The xerothermic grasslands under study are threatened by the lack of grazing, biocenotic evolution and accumulation of dead organic matter, which leads to succession changes in the natural habitat (secondary succession). The cutting of shrubs improved the shrub and tree-understory expansion index but brought only short-term results. The pasturage led to the improvement of parameters such as native expansive species of herbaceous plants, shrub and tree-understory expansion, and dead organic matter, which creates good conditions for the generative reproduction of xerothermic plants such as Carlina onopordifolia.

Opis:
The studies of vegetation were carried out in the years 2010–2013. One of the study objectives was to update the assessment of the natural value of psammophilous grasslands 20 years after the establishment of Kózki nature reserve (mazowieckie voivodship). The phytosociological survey results were compared with the archive survey results available in the nature reserve’s documentation. There were noted some significant changes in the species composition of plant communities. The assessment of natural values of psammophilous grasslands confirmed the occurrence a simplified form of the Corynephoro-Silenetum tataricae association – priority habitats for protection, the presence of 6 dry grassland indicator species, one endangered species (Carex praecox) and one plant species (Helichrysum arenarium) under legal protection was determined.

Opis:
Psammophilous grasslands are among the most valuable but also severely threatened habitats protected within the Natura 2000 network and, like most grassy ecosystems, they are also subject to secondary succession. Grazing has turned out to be an adequate conservation measure in inland sand ecosystems. Sheep are small ruminants which ingest plant species ignored by other livestock species; they also eat some undesirable plants containing toxic alkaloids and glycosides. The study objective is to assess the macroelement content of plants ingested by sheep of the breed called Świniarka. Regarded as being of low value, these plants occur in the sward of psammophilous grasslands in Kózki Nature Reserve. The Braun-Blanquet method was used to study the vegetation cover and identify the type of a plant community. The total protein, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and sulphur content in the aerial biomass of selected plant species (Armeria maritima, Calamagrostis epigejos, Carex praecox, Corynephorus canescens, Cynoglossum officinale, Dianthus deltoides, Juniperus communis, Koeleria glauca, Sedum acre and Thymus pulegioides) was determined. The analysed plant species occurred in the floristically rich psammophilous grasslands of the Vicio lathyroidis-Potentillion argenteae alliance, Spergulo-Corynephoretum association and in a community with the predominance of Calamagrostis epigejos. The biomass of psammophilous grasslands was characterised by a very low content of protein and phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and sulphur, in most cases below the optimum levels that would satisfy the nutritional requirements of animals. The biomass of Cynoglossum officinale had the significantly highest content of protein, phosphorus and magnesium, which could have been the reason why this species, despite its poisonous properties, was ingested by the Świniarka sheep grazing under the poor conditions of psammophilous grasslands. Species typical of psammophilous grasslands, such as Corynephorus canescens or Koeleria glauca, had the lowest nutritional value. C. canescens and Sedum acre were not ingested by sheep.
