Opis:
This article questions the consensus view of The Invincible (Niezwyciężony) as one of Lem’s classical sci-fi fi ctions. The author contends that in this novel the familiar conventions (later rejected in His Master’s Voice) coexist with a structural design characteristic of his late novels. An analysis of two pieces of the world of The Invincible, usually disregarded by the critics because of their sketchiness, i.e. the story of the extinct Lyrans and the account of the ancient biosphere of Regis III, reveals that in either case Lem no longer cares for the realist credentials of his fi ction and does not put the two planets on the astronomical map (which is no doubt deliberate choice). Moreover, in contrast to his earlier novels, his outline histories of the two biospheres contain hidden (but nonetheless unmistakable) parallels to the prehistory of the biosphere of the Earth (though he was no believer in evolutionary repeatability). As this article tries to demonstrate the two peripheral facets of the world depicted in the novel are clearly related and subordinated to the central story line (concerned with the ‘necrosphere’ and humanity). This structural dependence as well as the way in which key aspects of the world depicted in the novel seem to illustrate the theses articulated in Lem’s essays justifi es the conclusion that The Invincible should be treated as the fi rst novel of his late phase, represented – on account of its form – by His Master’s Voice.

Opis:
Redshift uncertainty. Political and non-political roots of Utopia in science fiction works of Stanislaw LemThe article focuses on the origins of Eutopian and Dystopian aspects of selected works of Stanislaw Lem, which were divided into pre- and post-Thaw ones (due to the differences in their relation with the tradition of that genre). Eutopian characteristics can be found in the first science fiction stories of Lem (both quasi-social realistic ones, set in the Communist Bloc countries, and their darker counterparts, set on the other side of the Iron Curtain). Technology seems to be more important there than politics. Similarily, science and technology form the basis of Eutopian visions of communist paradise in The Astronauts and The Magellanic Cloud (as well as Dystopian images of the enemies of communism in both novels, Venusians and long-dead “Atlanteans”, i.e. NATO members). Their very creation seems to be an effect of Lem’s own desire to write about space travels, which – in Stalinist era – wasn’t possible any other way. After the Thaw, both Dystopian and Utopian elements in Lem’s fiction gradually lose their political characteristics, corresponing with the grow of Lem’s interest in more universal matters. His later utopias still seem to origin primarely from the field of science and technology, and not of politics or philosophy. Their tone reflects the author’s loss of faith in the possibility of creating the paradise (on Earth, or interplenatary one) through either political or technological means. This can be observed as well in what could be called ‘broken utopias’, like the world of short stories about Pirx the Pilot.

Opis:
The article compares three science-fiction novels written by Polish writers representing three successive generations — Stanisław Lem’s Return from the Stars (1959), Adam Wiśniewski-Snerg’s Robot (1973), and Marek S. Huberath’s Nest of Worlds (1998)—that utilize the time dilation phenomenon as a basis for the plot. In each novel, time dilation serves also as a building block for a higher layer of meaning. In Lem’s—as a grim prediction about the fate of real-world astronautics at its birth; in Snerg’s—as association with his ‘theory of superbeings’; and in Huberath’s—as a part of solipsistic construction of the author’s own multiverse permeated with Christian themes to which the author often refers to in his other texts. This proves not only the unwavering popularity of the motif itself but also its flexibility which allows to adapt it to different needs and aesthetics that the evolution of the genre imposes.
