    Opis:
    In this article we point out the initial stage of the consolidation of the Christian text of Scripture, the major problems occurring during this process and the final expression of its specific character. The first and the major witness of this process is Justin Martyr thanks to whom we learn about first relations and tensions between Greek and Jewish tradition concerning Scripture. He advocated the universalist approach based on truth, which allowed him to find the way to conciliate those tensions. Furthermore, such an approach allowed him to look favourably on extra-Biblical tradition and recognise it as a preparation for the incarnation of the Eternal Word. Saint Irenaeus in his approach to the text of the Bible appreciated the divine origin and inspiration which decides about its superiority and universalism. By the end of the 3rd century the question of the Christian text of Scripture had been determined, and the emphasis was put rather on the issue of the books, that is the canon.

    Święty Hieronim należy do najbardziej znaczących postaci Kościoła łacińskiego, w którym jest uznawany za „księcia egzegetów”, i kultury Zachodu, łącznie z dziełem dokonania ich syntezy duchowej na podstawie tekstu Biblii. Jego dzieło zachowuje niewątpliwą aktualność i inspirujące znaczenie. W nowych warunkach życia Kościoła, a zwłaszcza korzystania z Biblii, warto przyjrzeć się dziełu translatorskiemu Hieronima i zastosowanej przez niego metodzie, która pozwoliła mu osiągnąć trwałe rezultaty. Zwracamy więc uwagę w perspektywie historycznej na jego główne odkrycie intelektualne, streszcza je formuła veritas hebraica. Chodzi w niej o pierwszeństwo dane językowi hebrajskiemu – jego poznanie i rozumienie jest koniecznym warunkiem dojścia do prawdy objawionej i do samej tajemnicy Boga. Efekty translatorskich wysiłków Hieronima stworzyły naukowe kryteria służące pracom nad przekładem Biblii. Sięgnięcie do tradycji żydowskiej odzwierciedla się także w spojrzeniu Hieronima na kanon biblijny.
    Saint Jerome is one of the most prominent figures of the Latin Church, in which he is considered to be the „prince of exegetes,” and Western culture, including the work of completing their spiritual synthesis based on the text of the Bible. Even today, his work has not lost much of its validity or inspiring meaning. Considering the present circumstances of the life of the Church, and especially the reading of the Bible, a closer look should be taken at Saint Jerome’s translation work and the method that he applied, which let him achieve lasting results. From a historical perspective, we try to draw attention to Jerome’s significant intellectual discovery, in which one can summarise the term Hebraica Veritas. It is about the priority given to Hebrew language – its cognition and understanding is a necessary condition for reaching the revealed truth and to the mystery of God itself. Based on his translation work, Jerome elaborated on scientific criteria for translating the Bible. Jerome’s perspective on a biblical canon also reflects the incorporation of the Jewish tradition.

    Origen is the exegete and Old Christian writer whose influence on the understanding of the Bible has always been determinative. Undoubtedly, for ecclesiastical reasons he deemed the Septuagint superior and regarded it as the Christian Old Testament. He thought highly of Hebrew text as well, which he often used for his research. An expression of this belief was among others the Hexapla worked out by Origen, which can be regarded as an exceptional manifestation of esteem towards the Old Testament and its Hebrew version. Origen’s attitude towards the Bible can be characterized by two approaches: on the one hand it is the ecclesiastical approach which gives the first place to the text commonly accepted in the Church namely the Septuagint, but on the other hand he is open to every other text Hebrew or Greek, trying to understand it and take it into account in his commentary.

    Święty Augustyn jest kluczową postacią Kościoła i kultury zachodniej, którego wpływ widać także w podejściu do Pisma Świętego i Jego interpretacji. Całość swojego spojrzenia na Biblię opisał w dziele De doctrina christiana, które nadal zasługuje na uwagę i na uwzględnienie jej we współczesnych interpretacjach biblijnych. Wśród tematów dotyczących tekstu biblijnego, które podejmuje Augustyn, pierwszorzędne miejsce odgrywają zagadnienia prawdy i autorytetu Septuaginty, kanonu Pism Świętych, natchnienia biblijnego i duchowej interpretacji tekstów biblijnych oraz przymiotów mówcy chrześcijańskiego. Szerokie uwzględnienie tych zagadnień i ich twórcze rozwinięcie, także przy wykorzystaniu tradycji retorycznej zaczerpniętej z myślicieli rzymskich, przede wszystkim Cycerona, przyczyniło się do nawiązania twórczego dialogu Kościoła z kulturą klasyczną, a także stało się modelem do jego kontynuowania w późniejszych epokach. W swoim podejściu do tekstu biblijnego Augustyn pozostaje nadal twórczym inspiratorem, pokazującym żywotność tradycji biblijnej oraz jej znaczenie kulturowe.
    Saint Augustine, whose influence is visible in terms of his approach to the Bible and Its interpretation, is a key figure of the Church and Western culture. He described his entire perspective on the Bible in his work De doctrina christiana, which still deserves attention and a place among the contemporary interpretations of the Bible. Among the topics dealing with the text of the Bible, which Augustine discusses, the most significant are the questions of the truth and authority of the Septuagint, the canon of the Holy Scriptures, biblical inspiration and the spiritual interpretation of biblical texts as well as the qualities of Christian orator. Augustine’s extensive consideration of these issues and his creative development of them, also making use of the rhetorical tradition drawn from Roman thinkers, above all Cicero, helped to establish a creative dialogue between the Church and classical culture becoming a model for its continuation in later eras. In his approach to the biblical text, Augustine remains a creative influencer, demonstrating the vitality of the biblical tradition and its cultural significance.
