    Opis:
    Poa chaixii (broad-leaved meadow grass) is a poorly known European grass and this, in turn, can be attributed to the fact of its rare occurrence. However, in recent years, a growing interest in many facets of this grass has been observed. The objective of research studies was a better understanding of biological-chemical properties of Poa chaixii which can determine its occurrence and utilisation on lowland areas. Investigations followed two directions: selected biological and chemical properties of this grass. Investigations of its biological properties included: the size and development of generative shoots as well as their seed potentials, plant vitality and response to nitrogen fertilisation. Investigations of chemical properties in our own studies comprised recognition in plants of the quantitative occurrence of organic and mineral constituents important from the nutritional point of view taking into account vegetation and different nitrogen fertilisation.

    Forest grasses are poorly known with respect to their chemical composition. This remark also refers to plant dyes. Chlorophyll plays a vital part, primarily, in physiological processes, whereas carotenes, especially beta-carotene – in determining plant fodder value. Our own investigations undertook these issues with regard to 13 species of forest grasses. In the light of the obtained research results, it can be said that the occurrence of the above-mentioned dyes is a characteristic trait of individual species. Levels of dye concentrations depend on the dynamics of plant growth and development as well as site conditions, especially moisture levels. Moreover, considerable changes in chlorophyll content occurred during the vegetation season which can affect plant vitality and fodder value as well as landscape.

    Galega orientalis (goat’s rue) is a plant characterised by a wide range of application possibilities, although its fodder utilisation appears to be most appropriate bearing in mind the chemical properties of this plant species, especially in the area of its organic components. However, the chemical composition of goat’s rue has not been properly investigated so far. Insufficient knowledge of its chemical composition can be attributed to the fact that the plant is included in the group of leguminous plants which are commonly considered to be characterised by high concentrations of mineral components. Nevertheless, the plant mineral composition undergoes far reaching changes and, hence, levels of chemical elements in plants are not always optimal. The aim of this research project was to get to know levels of occurrence of mineral constituents in the plants of goat’s rue with respect to their optimal values, both during the vegetative period as well as in the course of consecutive years of utilisation of plantations of this species.

    Opis:
    Fodder as well as phytoenergetic phytomass utilisation of goat’s rue depends, to a considerable extent, on plant response to their defoliation frequency. This feature is critical when decisions are to be taken whether it is more advantageous to employ a single harvest or to apply continuous production of phytomass by repeated plant defoliation. The performed experiments comprised: recognition of changes in plant chemical composition with respect to organic and mineral constituents important from nutritional point of view, determination of shoot morphological structure, assessment of plant vitality on the basis of the content of chlorophyll dyes as well as determination of the over-ground mass yield of goat’s rue regrowths.

    Cereal and meadow grasses are well recognised with respect to their content of organic and mineral constituents. Forest grasses, on the other hand, still remain a group of plants poorly recognised with regard to their chemical properties, even though they play many various functions, including: turf- and landscape-forming as well as fodder ones. These functions are determined by chemical properties of these plants. Results of our own investigations on the chemical properties of forest grasses expand our knowledge about this group of plants and, as such, provide a valuable supplementation of literature data. Forest grasses can serve as a valuable source of fodder for wildlife. Chemical composition of forest grasses, especially of structural carbohydrates, determines the structure of shoots as well as their arrangement and the establishment of leaves on them. This property is important for the visual perception of grasses, especially with respect to their landscape and aesthetic role.
