Opis:
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of cobalt on the content of total organic carbon, total nitrogen, the available forms of phosphorus, potassium and magnesium and the C:N ratio in soil, following the application of neutralising substances. The effect of cobalt in soil was tested on oats (Avena sativa L.). In order to limit the effect of cobalt, the soil was enriched with neutralising substances, i.e. manure, clay, charcoal, zeolite and calcium oxide. In the series with no neutralising substance, the increasing doses of cobalt only caused an increase in the amount of the available potassium, and the highest Co dose favoured an increase in the organic carbon content and a wider C:N ratio in soil. All the substances affected the content of the available potassium in soil, with charcoal, and especially manure, contributing to its elevated accumulation. Besides, manure fostered a growth in the soil content of the available phosphorus, charcoal - the content of organic carbon and the available potassium, and zeolite - the total nitrogen content, while calcium oxide promoted a higher content of total nitrogen and the available phosphorus. Clay and charcoal (unlike zeolite) caused the widening of the C:N ratio in soil.

Opis:
Cobalt plays a special role in living organisms. However, it becomes harmful to their growth after its concentration exceeds an acceptable level. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of increasing levels of cobalt in soil (0, 20, 40, 80, 160, 320 mg kg-1 d.m. of soil) following the application of neutralising substances on the content of Corg, total-N and available forms of P, K and Mg in soil. The neutralising substances applied in the experiment included manure, loam, charcoal, zeolite at 2% of the soil weight, and calcium oxide at a dose corresponding to one unit of HAC. The same levels of materials were also applied to the soil. Spring barley was the main crop, and white mustard was the successive crop. Applying both increasing levels of cobalt and neutralising substances to soil had a significant effect on the content of Corg, the macronutrients under study and the C:N ratio in soil. Increasing levels of cobalt in the series with no neutralising substances increased the content of Corg and available K, widened the C:N ratio and reduced the content of total-N in soil. Among the neutralising substances under study, charcoal increased the content of Corg and widened the C:N ratio the most and, in the case of total-N, the greatest and negative effect was caused by calcium oxide. The addition of manure to soil increased the content of available P, K and Mg the most. Among the other neutralising substances, zeolite had the greatest effect, as it reduced the content of Corg, available P, K and Mg and reduced the C:N ratio in soil. A similar effect of charcoal on the content of total-N and P and of calcium oxide on the content of K was observed.

Opis:
Because of the potential threat for development of plants, resulting from the occurrence of too high cobalt contents in soil environment, a study was undertaken aiming to determine the effect of increasing soil contamination with cobalt (0, 20, 40, 80, 160, 320 mg·kg-¹ of soil), following the application of neutralising substances (farmyard manure, loam, charcoal, zeolite and calcium oxide), on the soil pH, hydrolytic acidity, total exchangeable bases, cation exchange capacity and the base saturation. In the series without neutralising substances added, soil contamination with the highest doses of cobalt resulted in a decrease in pH, in the total exchangeable bases, in the cation exchange capacity, and in the base saturation, and in an increase in the soil hydrolytic acidity. Of the applied neutralising substances, farmyard manure and particular calcium oxide had the greatest effect on the analysed soil properties. The application of the substances resulted in an increase in the soil pH, in the base exchange capacity, in the cation exchange capacity and in the base saturation and also in a decrease in the soil hydrolytic acidity. The other substances had no, or a small, effect on the studied soil properties.

Opis:
In the late 18th and early 19th c., a drastic reduction in the area of forests due to their excessive exploitation occurred in Europe, which gave rise to the birth of afforestation efforts. The chemical composition of plants, including trees, depends on the many biotic and abiotic environmental factors. The aim of this study was to determine the content of some nutrients in needles and bark of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), leaves and bark of silver birch (Betula pendula) and Norway maple (Acer platanoides L.), depending on their location. The content of phosphorus, potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium depended on a plant species, plant organ and the location of sample collection. The leaves of silver birch, compared to its bark, contained ten-fold more potassium and six-fold more phosphorus and magnesium. The content of phosphorus was the highest in silver birch leaves in the center of Olsztyn. The highest potassium content was observed in silver birch leaves and Norway maple bark in the center of Olsztyn. The calcium content was the highest in the leaves and bark of maple trees growing near State Road 51 and in the leaves of this species in the city center. The highest sodium content was detected in the leaves and bark of most tree species growing along State Road 51 and in the center of Olsztyn.
