Opis:
Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo is an ongoing comic book series devoted to the adventures of Usagi Miyamoto. The eponymous character is a rabbit ronin that wanders the Japanese archipelago. Despite its seeming simplicity, the Usagi Yojimbo series is a true trove of information about Edo period Japan. This article presents different ways in which readers are able to acquire knowledge about Japan from reading Usagi Yojimbo. It focuses on several aspects of the series that present elements of Japanese culture, history, and language. The article also discusses the visual aspects of Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo comics that have an effect on readers’ perception of the presented content and influence their learning about Japanese culture.

Opis:
The complex of Salix retusa includes S. retusa s.s., S serpyllifolia and S. kitaibeliana, small, prostrate willows occurring in the subalpine and alpine vegetation belts of the mountains of Central Europe: the Pyrenees, Alps, Apennines, Dynaric Alps, Carpathians and Rila. The systematic positions of these taxa are not fully resolved and are still disputed. The aim of the present study was to biometrically verify differences in leaf characteristics between these taxa. Material was collected from 47 populations, each represented by 25–52 individuals (33 on average). The study was based on 14 leaf morphological characters measured from scans using Win Folia software. The principal component analysis (PCA), Ward’s agglomeration method, the K-means cluster analysis (K-MCA) and Kruskal-Wallis tests were applied to verify the relationships between taxa and their populations. Differences between average leaf characteristics of S. retusa s.s., S. serpyllifolia and S. kitaibeliana were detected. The Pyrenean populations of S. retusa s.s. appeared more similar to S. serpyllifolia. Within the Alpine populations of S. serpyllifolia, several individuals resembling S. retusa s.s. were detected, and vice versa, within populations of S. retusa s.s., and there were also individuals similar to S. serpyllifolia. The controversial S. kitaibeliana was found to be typical of the Tatra Mountains. The results support close taxonomic relations, but also the separate status of S. retusa, S. serpyllifolia and S. kitaibeliana. The differences between them are mainly of a quantitative nature.

Opis:
Thuja occidentalis and T. plicata belong to alien trees most frequently cultivated in Europe. Morphologically they differ significantly from each other and their natural ranges are geographically isolated, hence the taxonomic status of both taxa has never been questioned. In cultivation, however, these species are often very difficult to distinguish so speculations appeared that they can hybridize with each other. Reports about their hybrids growing in the Kórnik Arboretum, Poland, have been delivered several times; for the first time in 1933, then in 1957 and in 1981. In the latter publication, based on those hybrids, a new nothospecies Thuja ×plicatoides was described. That name, however, was not validly published, because its Latin diagnosis was limited only to a few words and no mention was made of how the hybrid differed from its parental species. The analysis of numerous arborvitae specimens growing in the Kórnik Arboretum, and in many other places in Poland, has shown that the earlier reports about the occurrence of Thuja hybrids in cultivation were fully justified. The results of this study were documented by numerous photographs showing the main diagnostic features of T. occidentalis, T. plicata and their hybrids. Special attention was paid to the characteristics of cones, which are rarely used in the Thuja taxonomy. The shape of cone scales, the length of the scale mucro and the structure of small 'lips' on the scale apices turned out to be significant cone features; the latter was used for the first time when distinguishing between both Thuja species. The cone and leaf features made it possible to recognize not only 'pure' species, but also their hybrids. The name Thuja ×plicatoides Seneta, for formal reasons has been rejected, so for the hybrids a new name Thuja ×senetiana has been proposed, which commemorates Włodzimierz Seneta, an outstanding Polish dendrologist.

Opis:
In the paper, the research on the process of optimizing the carbon footprint to obtain the low-carbon products is presented. The optimization process and limits were analyzed based on the CFOOD project co-financed by the Polish Research and Development Agency. In the article, the carbon footprint (CF) testing methods with particular emphasis on product life cycle assessment (LCA) are discussed. The main problem is that the energy received from the energy-meters per the production stage is not directly represented in the raw data set obtained from the factory because many production line machines are connected to a single measurement point. In the paper, we show that in some energy-demanding production stages connected with cooling processes the energy used for the same stage and similar production can differ even 25-40%. That is why the energy optimization in the production can be very demanding.

Opis:
The storage and disposal of sewage sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants is becoming an increasing problem on a global scale. The attention of scientists is directed to the search for unique technologies to manage them. Firing sewage sludge in furnaces and producing lightweight aggregates and granules constitutes an innovative method of its disposal. The resulting granules could be a substitute for commonly used materials such as perlite, vermiculite, expanded clay, or LSA, and could be used as a secondary material in the construction industry, including road construction, as various types of ballast, and as an equivalent to aggregate in concretes. However, given that sewage sludge is increasingly used in biogas production, it does not completely decompose in the process and is still a problematic waste for many municipal treatment plants. Therefore, the use of sewage sludge pellets in construction, or any other industry, could revolutionize the market. The purpose of the conducted research was to evaluate the heat-insulating properties of granules produced from sewage sludge from the Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant "Łyna" in Olsztyn used as a heat-insulating material.
