Opis:: The essay analyzes the importance of true speech (as described in M. Detienne’s Les Maîtres de Vérité) in epic fantasy. Starting with J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth, through Lyndon Hardy’s magical worlds, Ursula LeGuin’s Earthsea and AnnMcCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern series, speech carries an added value of truth, preserving and shaping the universe in turn – such understanding of privileged speech links modern fantasy literature to its ancient models (Homer or Hesiod).

Opis:: While the article discusses the factors that motivated Socrates’ decisionin the Crito, it emphasizes the possible cultural import of the choiceundertaken in the aftermath of the political upheavals in the late fifthcentury. It is also argued here that as Plato’s dialogue were written inthe period that followed the renewal of the Athenian politeia, it shouldbe perceived as having its roots both in the historical reality of its narrativefocus (i.e. Socrates’ trial) and in the then reality of Plato’s Athens(i.e., its political stability dependent on the ephebic oath).

Opis:: Peaceful dream of Clytemnestra, or what is missing in Euripides’ Electra Clytemnestra’s dream features as an important element of the vengeance dramas of both Aeschylus and Sophocles: still, is remains absent from the Euripidean version. This short essay sketches the possible implications of such an ‘omission’, while simultaneously highlighting the highly contrasting implications of the dream in the Choephorae and in the Sophoclean Electra.
