Opis:
The article presents the role of evil spirits in the history of salvation according to Saint Peter Chrysologus. This argument has not been examined so far though it is to be found in many homilies of the Bishop of Ravenna. His sermons explain the reason for the fall of the angels created by God as wonderful heavenly beings. They explain the devil’s role in temptation, indicating the cause of evil to the world. The preacher emphasizes the victory of Christ over Satan and points to him as a source of hope for Christians in their spiritual struggle, in which practice of prayer and fasting are helpful.

Opis:
Angelology in the sermons of the Bishop of Ravenna improves the doctrine of angels presented in the writings of the Church Fathers. It includes the ontological, historical and salvific dimension. St. Peter Chrysologus presents angels as free spiritual beings created by God. On the other hand, he strongly emphasizes their role in God’s salvific plan focusing on the two fundamental events in the life of Christ: the Incarnation and the Resurrection. The heavenly beings reveal to people the saving plan of God, prepare for the mystery of the Incarnation and Jesus’ coming to the world, grant God’s gifts to people and pray before God for them. They announce the Resurrection of Christ and inspire his disciples to proclaim the truth to all nations. The angelology of St. Peter Chrysologus is not particularly new and original as he uses the themes and ideas well known to the authors of Christian antiquity, especially the Greek Fathers. Nevertheless, knowing the teaching of the Bishop of Rawenna enriches the knowledge of the teaching of the Church Fathers of the Fifth Century.

Opis:
The article Holiness of the Church according to Sermons of St. Peter Chrysologus presents one aspect of the ecclesiology of the bishop of Ravenna. Among the most popular questions, which are evidenced in his theological reflection, it is necessary to evidence, that Church Fathers focus their attention on an ontological aspect of the Church’s holiness which finds its foundation in Christ. Frequent references to ideas of the Mystical Body of Christ or the Church as a spouse of Christ confirm our opinion. It is necessary to admit that these themes, like other questions, developed in Chrysologus’s sermons (the role of the sacrament or belief that there is no salvation outside the Church) are already known in the patristic literature. Therefore the ecclesiology of the bishop of Ravenna is not original. However, taking into consideration the pastoral dimension of his teaching, it is clear that the objective of his sermons was different than to present an ecclesiological treatise. The results of analytical researches allow to complete the picture of the doctrine of the Church by its unknown aspect, contained in the teaching of the bishop of Ravenna.

Opis:
An analysis of sermons 56-62bis showed that Peter Chrysologus’ doctrine of the universal resurrection of the dead is not original and exhaustive. He presented to the catechumens the two most important arguments, explaining the truth of the faith: God’s omnipotence and resurrection of Christ. Bishop of Ravenna, commenting on the phrase “credo in carnis resurrectionem” also used the analogies referring to the cyclicality of the phenomena of nature (day and night, the seasons). Despite the developed reflection on this topic in the writings of early Christian writers of the fourth and fifth centuries, Peter Chrysologus did not use the arguments defending the truth about the resurrection of the dead resulting from: the purpose of life, the human structure and justice. His sermons also lack other topics: the relationship of the universality of the resurrection to the universality of redemption (Hilary of Poitiers), reflection on the properties of the resurrected body – his spirituality (Cyril of Jerusalem, Ambrose) and comparison of its properties to the body of an angel (Hilary of Poitiers, Jerome, Augustine). There is also no biblical argument that has been used, for example in the writings of St. Irenaeus of Lyons, or in the commentary of Venantius Fortunatus to the Symbol. Despite these shortcomings, Peter Chrysologus’ comment to an article about the general resurrection of the dead, deserves to be acknowledged – it is a testimony of faith of the Church in the 5th century Ravenna and the expression of his pastoral care of the faith of the community.
