Opis:
Signal processing methods make possible such a mixing of signals that their overlapping in the time-frequency plane is reduced. This can be achieved by reducing the number of overlapping signals by discarding contributions from weaker signals and leaving only contributions from stronger ones. When applied to acoustic signals, this is referred to by the authors as selective mixing of sounds. Previous research has shown, that this rule, when applied to signals of musical instruments can provide some perceptual advantages over simple adding up the sound sources. In this paper, an experiment was carried out to determine the threshold of the value of relative energy of sound sources to control the decision about discarding a contribution from a particular sound source.

Opis:
Discrimination of just noticeable change in pitch has been widely investigated. In contrast, works on discrimination of two simultaneous pitches produced by two tones have been scarce. In this work two methods were used to find the minimum frequency interval in a two-tone at which listeners perceive two distinct pitches. In the first, listeners tuned manually the frequency interval between components in a two-tone. In the second, the frequency interval between tones in a two-tone was switched between five different fixed values, and a pitch of a probe tone was compared with pitches in a two-tone. Both methods were used in two different groups of listeners, musicians and non-musicians. The first method yielded substantially narrower intervals. Both methods revealed that musicians were able to discriminate pitches at narrower intervals than non-musicians. The raw results of tests were evaluated by two approaches, one was based on fitting of the psychometric function and the other on statistical tests.

Opis:
Some correlation has been found in literature between the amount of mild hearing impairment and lowering of performance in listening tasks. The relationship between measures of hearing acuity and performance in listening tasks in the population of normally hearing subjects has not found a solid evidence. In this work six one-parameter measures of hearing acuity based on audiograms, including three originally proposed by the authors, were used to investigate whether a relationship between those measures and listeners' performance existed. The results of six listening tests were investigated, three with speech, two with musical excerpts and one with everyday sounds. The results showed no correlation between hearing acuity and performance, with the exception of everyday sounds, where some correlation was found. No significant differences between the measures used were found.

Opis:
The threshold of discrimination of a pure tone probe in the background of a one ERB wide masker composed of inharmonic partials was investigated. The experiment was participated with a large group of 35 listeners. Very consistent results were observed across two independent variables: the number of partials (from three to five) and their amplitudes being equal or unequal. For all but one of the conditions, the threshold obtained was between -4 and -5 dB. The threshold slightly decreased with increasing number of partials and was slightly lower when their amplitudes were even.

Opis:
The phenomenon of masking in the environment of musical sounds has not yet been deeply investigated. An experiment was conducted to find out whether masking of a band of frequencies in a musical instrument sound by the remaining spectral content of that instrument could be explained by "energetic" masking, i.e. masking resulting from overlapping patterns of excitation on the basilar membrane. An isolated, about one octave wide, band of frequencies of the saxophone sound playing a couple of notes legato was masked alternatively by two maskers: CBN - the band of noise occupying the same frequency range plus the remaining spectral content of the saxophone sound, and BN - the same band of noise acting alone. For both maskers, the level of noise was increased gradually to detect the respective thresholds of masking. Masker CBN was more efficient in masking by about 15 dB, indicating that the harmonics below and above the analysed band contributed substantially more to masking than noise inside the band. As energetic masking of those harmonics was weak, non-energetic or "informational" masking prevailed.
