    Opis:
    The notion of “murder” plays an important role in philosophical, and ethical inquiries, for it denotes an act absolutely prohibited in the domain of human lethal actions. Yet, despite its relevance, it is repeatedly defined in the improper way. In this paper, the most essential elements of the moral concept of murder were determined on the basis of the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas. It was shown that commonly accepted definitions of this concept (which consider murder as wrong killing or illegal killing) do not grasp the essence of the defined action. Moreover, contemporary and historical legal definitions of this concept were reconstructed and analysed. It was done in order to prove that they have a procedural character and play a practical role in the judicial system, but they do not recognize a proper moral meaning of this concept.

    Opis:
    W artykule rekonstruuję i poddaję krytycznej analizie koncepcję kultury św. Tomasza z Akwinu. Rekonstrukcja historyczna służy celowi, jakim jest ukazanie: (a) ograniczeń Tomaszowej teorii kultury, a także (b) jej aktualność (oraz jej żywotność w kontekście innych dyscyplin filozoficznym, między innymi – filozofii biznesu). Choć Akwinata w swoich pismach nie rozważał bezpośrednio zagadnienia kultury, to zamierzony cel zostaje osiągnięty przez wpisanie omawianego zagadnienia w szerszy kontekst Tomaszowej etyki cnót. Uznając na wstępie, że kultura stanowi niejako duszę wspólnoty, wykazuję, że właśnie jako duchowy aspekt communitas, kultura jest adresatem obowiązków wynikających z cnoty sprawiedliwości. Następnie, uszczegóławiając analizę, ustalam, że cnotą, która najlepiej uchwytuje zagadnienie kultury w kontekście wspólnotowym, jest pietas (w polskich tłumaczeniach określana jako patriotyzm lub pietyzm), której przedmiotem jest to, co człowiek winny jest wspólnocie, z której pochodzi. Omawiam podstawowe sposoby realizacji cnoty pietas – cześć oraz służbę – oraz wskazuję, jak realizują się one w aspekcie kultury.
    In diesem Artikel rekonstruiere und analysiere ich kritisch den Kulturbegriff des heiligen Thomas von Aquin. Die historische Rekonstruktion dient dem Zweck, (a) die Grenzen der Kulturtheorie des heiligen Thomas sowie (b) ihre Relevanz (und ihre Vitalität im Kontext anderer philosophischer Disziplinen, einschließlich der Wirtschaftsphilosophie) aufzuzeigen. Obwohl Thomas von Aquin die Frage der Kultur in seinen Schriften nicht direkt berücksichtigte, wird das beabsichtigte Ziel erreicht, indem das diskutierte Thema in den breiteren Kontext seiner Ethik der Tugenden gestellt wird. Indem ich zu Beginn anerkenne, daß die Kultur in gewissem Sinne die Seele der Gemeinschaft ist, zeige ich, daß die Kultur gerade als geistlicher Aspekt der communitas Adressat der Pflichten ist, die sich aus der Tugend der Gerechtigkeit ergeben. Dann stelle ich in einer detaillierten Analyse fest, dass die Tugend, die das Thema Kultur in einem Gemeinschaftskontext am besten erfasst, Pietas (in polnischen Übersetzungen als Patriotismus oder Pietismus bezeichnet) ist. Ihr Gegenstand ist das, was ein Mensch der Gemeinschaft schuldet, aus der er kommt. Ich bespreche die grundlegenden Wege der Verwirklichung der Tugend von Pietas – Ehrfurcht und Dienst – und zeige, wie sie unter dem Aspekt der Kultur verwirklicht werden.
    This study reconstructs and critically analyses the concept of culture that was articulated in the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas. The historical reconstruction served the primary purpose of showing (i) the limitations of Aquinas’ theory of culture, and (ii) the relevance of Aquinas’ theory (and its vitality in the context of other philosophical disciplines, among others-the philosophy of business). Although Aquinas did not directly reflect on the issue of culture in his writings, one can achieve a better understanding of his approach to culture by placing it within the broader context of Thomasian virtue ethics. Recognising at the outset that culture constitutes the soul of the community, it was shown that, precisely as the spiritual aspect of communitas, culture is, in a sense, the subject of the obligations arising from the virtue of justice. Then it was established that the virtue that best captures the issue of culture is pietas (in Polish translations referred to as patriotism or pietism), which has as its object the rights of the community and the obligations of an individual toward his or her motherland. The basic ways in which the virtue of pietas is realised-reverence and service-are discussed and it is indicated how they are carried out in the context of culture.
