    The present paper aims to investigate the way in which Africa is perceived by Danish speakers in light of the most petrified linguistic expressions and corpus data. As it turns out, the received picture is largely negative, with elements such as POVERTY, DISEASES, LACK OF DEMOCRACY, WARS and ETHNIC CLASHES in its foreground. Moreover, in the majority of the analyzed contexts Africa is presented as a cluster of similar countries facing the same challenges, with little room for the awareness of the great cultural diversity that flourishes on the continent. In this context, it is also worth adding that the analyzed collocations also convey a closely related stereotype of the inhabitants of Africa, regarded primarily through the prism of the color of their skin and the suffering they must endure on their continent. It is no surprise, then, that Africa and African people are quite often perceived as a problem for the western world, especially because of the highly-feared waves of immigrants and asylum seekers that occur regularly on the continent. On the other hand, at least in the light of the analyzed material, there seems to be no to little realization of the fact that many of the problems of Africa stem from the ages of draining its human and natural resources by the colonial powers. As argued by the author of the present article, such a picture of Africa is not only unfair but may have other consequences as well, possibly predetermining how Danes willview single issues such as immigration or military invasions, and letting them fall into the spiral of eurocentric and patronizing understanding of the world.

    The article aims to reconstruct the conceptualization of KÆRLIGHED (LOVE) in Old Danish (1100–1515). In the first part of the study, the structure of the concept in Old Danish is analyzed, and parallels are drawn to the modern-day concept of KÆRLIGHED, the most significant differences being registered in the subcategories of PATRIOTISM and ROMANTIC LOVE, as well as in connection with the sense ‘love to do’. In the following parts of the study, the most important aspects and conceptual metaphors of Old Danish KÆRLIGHED are revealed, demonstrating a great influence of Christian values. Lastly, the nouns ælskhugh and kærlikhet are analyzed, and the difference between them is described as a different profiling of the various aspects of KÆRLIGHED, such as JOY and PLEASURE.

    The present paper aims to investigate and compare the conceptualization and verbalization of the in-out relation in Danish and Polish. The introductory paragraphs focus on the differences in the distribution of content in Polish and Danish employing Leonard Talmy’s typological classification of languages into verb-framed and satellite-framed, and provide information about Danish Directional Adverbs which are believed to be the key to understanding spatial relations in Danish. The analysis in the following paragraph reveals similarities and differences in the perception of the in-out relation through image schemas such as container and center-periphery. The analysis of the center-periphery image schema in Danish reveals that there is often a presupposed reference point in situations where the directional adverb does not refer to the in-out relation denoted by the prepositional phrase, which leads to a description of the general structure of this image schema in the last part of the article.

    The traditional picture of mother (mor/moder) in Danish present in the most linguistically entrenched expressions does not differ much from the ones known from other European languages, such as Polish, Russian, or English. In its light mother is a person who gives her child an unconditioned love, care, and who is fully dedicated to her role, which, in turn, should bring her ultimate happiness and satisfaction. What is characteristic of Danish culture, however, is the modern-day tendency to revise this simplified picture. The mother-housewife stereotype is almost entirely gone from the system of the Danish language, and the same pertains to the belief that she has to be the wife of the father, as gender equality and the idea of open labor market have long resided at the top of the Danish hierarchy of values. Meanwhile, in contemporary Danish discourse, one breaks with other stereotypical elements of the traditional picture of the mother, and a more nuanced picture is being drawn, in an attempt to separate the ideal and the typical scenario more visibly. First and foremost, much writing space is given to the fact that the mother role requires hard work, and that it is not only connected with good feelings, but also anxiety, loneliness, or even depression. The traditional idealization of the concept itself, in turn, is valued very negatively, as one perceives it as the main source of unfair expectations towards mothers. Interestingly, this tendency seems to be common in the Danish mainstream media regardless of the political stances taken: it can be found both in the Christian Kristeligt Dagblad and the left-wing Information.
    Tradycyjny obraz matki obecny w najbardziej utrwalonych formach języka duńskiego nie różni się wiele od tego spotykanego w innych językach europejskich, takich jak polski, rosyjski czy angielski. W jego świetle matka to osoba dająca dziecku bezgraniczną i bezwarunkową miłość, całodobową opiekę i w pełni poświęcona swojej roli, która z kolei przynosić ma jej największe szczęście i spełnienie. Nie brak w nim również cech stereotypowych, takich jak nadopiekuńczość i nadmierna pobłażliwość. Charakterystyczna dla duńskiej kultury i duńskiego języka jest natomiast współczesna tendencja do rewizji owego uproszczonego obrazu matki. Najgłębiej duńską mentalność przeniknęły zmiany dotyczące społecznej roli matki i już w podstawowych faktach językowych odciśnięte jest przekonanie, że matka nie musi być strażniczką domowego ogniska i żoną ojca – znacznie wyżej cenione jest równouprawnienie płci i udział kobiet w rynku pracy. We współczesnym duńskim dyskursie zrywa się natomiast z innymi stereotypowymi elementami tradycyjnego obrazu matki i jednocześnie dąży do jego zniuansowania, czyli wyraźniejszego rozdzielenia ideału od przypadku typowego. Dużo mówi się przede wszystkim o tym, jak ciężka jest rola matki i że związana jest ona nie tylko z dobrymi uczuciami, ale także strachem, niepewnością, samotnością czy nawet depresją. Samą idealizację konceptu, narzucaną kobietom od lat, wartościuje się bardzo negatywnie i postrzega jako główne źródło niesprawiedliwych oczekiwań wobec matek. Co ciekawe, ta tendencja do deidealizacji wydaje się być wspólna duńskim mediom głównego nurtu niezależnie od podziałów politycznych - można znaleźć ją zarówno w chrześcijańskim Kristeligt Dagblad, jak i w mocno lewicowej Information.

    Opis:
    The article aims to describe two images or views of friendship in Danish. The data, excerpted from dictionaries (lexical definitions, synonyms, antonyms, hyperonyms, derivatives, and compounds) and from the National Corpus of Danish, show that there exist two parallel images of friendship in the language: one is connected with a more traditional understanding of friendship as a strong and close bond, the other is based on the idea of many acquaintances/friends. Corpus data suggest that it is the other, more recent image of friendship that is now most frequently evoked by speakers of Danish, although the traditional view is still present in their consciousness. This conclusion is corroborated by an analysis of the word ven, the main lexical exponent of the cultural concept being investigated.
    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest opisanie dwóch różnych obrazów przyjaźni występujących w języku duńskim. Materiał językowy, pozyskany ze słowników (definicje leksykalne, synonimy, antonimy, hiperonimy, derywaty i złożenia związane z głównymi leksykalnymi eksponentami konceptu) oraz z Narodowego Korpusu Języka Duńskiego, wskazuje na to, że w języku duńskim równolegle funkcjonują dwa obrazy przyjaźni – jeden związany z bardziej tradycyjnym postrzeganiem przyjaźni jako bardzo silnej i bliskiej relacji oraz jeden, w ramach którego głównym celem jest posiadanie wielu znajomych/przyjaciół. Dane pochodzące z korpusu pozwalają na stwierdzenie, że to właśnie ten drugi, nowszy obraz przyjaźni jest obecnie najczęściej przywoływany przez użytkowników języka duńskiego, mimo że tradycyjny obraz przyjaźni wydaje się być wciąż obecny w ich świadomości. Wniosek ten poparty został dodatkowo analizą rozwoju znaczenia leksemu ven, który jest głównym leksykalnym eksponentem konceptu i który współcześnie odzwierciedla szersze rozumienie przyjaźni w języku duńskim.
