- This paper discusses the opportunities for reducing the emissions of substances dangerous to the environment as a result of switching from traditional ferry drives to electric propulsion systems. The research carried out included the analysis and evaluation of the technical solutions that are currently used in mixed passenger/vehicle vessels operating in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR). A comparative analysis of the impact of internal combustion engines and environmentally-friendly alternatives was also performed. The objective of the paper was to analyse and evaluate the organisation of ferry services in the BSR in the context of the propulsion systems used in ferries. The technical solutions currently used in the vessels under review were identified, as well as the possibilities offered by electric propulsion.
