Opis:
The aim of the study was to evaluate the contents of Cd, Pb, Zn and Cu in shoots of willow (Salix viminalis L.) cultivated in the vicinity of a coal ash and slag landfill. The landfill is surrounded by arable lands and meadows. There are two major negative influences of the landfill - dusting and flooding. The result of these interactions is the systematic reduction of agricultural value of the land. A field with an area of 9600 m2 were chosen. The land is located east to the landfill. A total of 40 samples of biomass was collected. The contents of analysed elements were determined by FAAS using a Unicam Solaar M6 spectrometer. Distance from the landfill affects the contents of Cd, Pb, Zn and Cu in the tested willow shoots. However, there is no single concentration pattern for all the investigated metals. An increase in willow cultivation on the described area can bring a good environmental effect and become an example of proper management of the ash and slag landfill neighbourhood.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to compare the levels of cadmium and lead in livers, kidneys and wool / hair / of sheep and goats reared in the vicinity of the steelworks in Nowa Huta in Kraków and in the control field, Rożniatów, in which there was no emitters of heavy metals. Samples were collected post mortem from one-year old animals of one breed (within a species) and one sex, who had lived from birth in the studied areas. Both species were fed with the same fodder and have remained in the same places. Wet mineralization was applied (mixture of nitric acid (V) and chloric (VII) (3: 1)) metal determination was done by a FASA method. The levels of the metals depend on the species, on the test areas and on the collected part of the animal. Tissues from sheep contained more cadmium and lead than the tissue of goats. The highest cadmium content was found in the kidney, lower in the liver, the lowest in the hair / wool of tested animals. Goat kidneys from both areas of research and sheep kidneys from Rożniatów meet consumer standards for cadmium. However, 20% of sheep kidneys sampled from Nowa Huta district exceeded the standards for cadmium. The lead content of both species exceeded the limit in all of the kidneys and livers from Nowa Huta district. In Rożniatów the standards were not fulfilled for all kidneys and livers of goats, and all kidneys and 70% of the livers of sheep.

Opis:
Kompostowanie to sięgająca starożytności praktyka rolnicza mająca za zadanie wyprodukowanie cennych nawozów. W drugiej połowie XX wieku zaczęto wykorzystywać tą praktykę do utylizacji frakcji organicznej odpadów komunalnych i osadów z oczyszczalni ścieków i takie zastosowanie tego procesu dziś dominuje. Nie oznacza to jednak, że zaprzestano produkcji kompostów z „tradycyjnych” materiałów, że nie wykorzystuje się ich jako nawozów w ogrodnictwie. Celem pracy była ocena zróżnicowania zawartość Cd, Pb, Zn i Cu w kompostach wytwarzanych w różnych technologiach i miejscach z podobnego materiału wsadowego. W odniesieniu do minimalnej zawarto- ści materii organicznej w stałych nawozach organicznych zamieszczonej w wym. rozporządzeniu wymogi spełniał jedynie kompost z Płaszowa. Zgodnie z metodą IUNG stężenia ołowiu w badanych kompostach należy uznać za naturalne (00 ) a kadmu za podwyższone (I0 ) jedynie w kompostach z Baryczy i Rzozowa. Stwierdzono również średnie zanieczyszczenie (III0 ), cynkiem kompostu z Rzozowa i miedzią kompostu z Baryczy.
Composting is reaching Antiquities agricultural practice mandated to produce valuable fertilizers. In the second half of the twentieth century was begun use this practice for the utilization of the organic fraction of municipal waste and sludge from sewage treatment plants and such application of this process dominates today. It does not mean, however, that ceased production of compost from „traditional” materials, they are not used as fertilizers in horticulture. The aim of the study was to estimate diversify of Cd, Pb, Zn and Cu contents in composts produced in different technologies and places but made of a similar feed material. The research material was obtained from the Krakow City (MPO Krakow) Composting Plant in Barycz, a Composting Plant at Plaszow (Krakow district) belonging to a private company Ekokonsorcjum-Effect and the three domestic composting piles located in the villages near Krakow: Bobin, Czarnochowice and Rzozow and from an allotments located at Krakow (Praska Street). Charge material for compost were taken: waste from the care of green areas of Krakow City, waste from Krakow marketplaces, which sold fruit and vegetables, weeds from weeding, the remains of cultivated plants (non-consumption parts), home waste food. The contents of the analysed elements were determined by flame atomic absorbtion spectrophotometer, the Unicam Solaar M6 apparatus. Place composting and therefore the feed material and method of composting affect the contents of the investigated metals. Composts differed significantly in terms of the content of cadmium, lead, zinc, copper and organic matter. In terms of the content of the analysed metals composts meet the requirements for them by the relevant Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. As regards the minimum content of organic matter in the solid organic fertilizers reproduced in the Regulation requirements met only compost from Plaszow. According to the method IUNG the concentration of lead in the studied composts should be considered natural (00 ) and cadmium for elevated (I0 ) only composts Baryczy and Rzozów. It was also the average contamination (III0 ), zinc compost from Rzozów and copper compost Baryczy.

Opis:
The main purpose of the study was to compare carabid beetles assemblages from recultivated and spontaneously regenerated forest of post−industrial areas. The survey was conducted in southern part of Poland in three environmental types: recultivated (afforested) dumping grounds, spontaneously re−vegetated dumping grounds and reference forests. In total, 2036 specimen belonging to 36 Carabidae species were collected. GLM analysis indicated that carabids assemblages structures (abundance, species richness, Fisher alpha index, general biomass and mean individual biomass) decreased on recultivated dumping grounds in comparison to areas with spontaneous succession and reference forest. Analysis of redundancy showed a wide variety of species composition and life traits parameters in respect to environmental types. SIMPER analysis showed that species characteristic for recultivated dumping grounds included e.g. Harpalus rufipes and Calathus erratus (small body size and herbivore strategy of feeding). C. erratus was the most dominant on spontaneously regenerated dumping grounds, while species typical for forest ecosystems included representatives of Carabus and Pterostichus sp. (brachypterous large or medium size predators).

Opis:
Coal combustion ash-slag mixtures have been deposited in landfills in Poland for decades. At the same time, there is a shortfall in the amount of available materials related to the construction and modernisation of transportation infrastructure. Thus, a typical landfill of a power station was chosen and the aim of the study was to assess the suitability of an ash-slag landfill mixture for construction engineering purposes. The following physicochemical analyses were conducted: pH, specific electrical conductivity and determination of the leachability of basic (Ca, Na, K and Mg) and trace elements (Cd, Pb, Cr, Zn and Cu). The content of selected basic and trace elements were determined in the eluates by FAAS and standard methods were applied for geotechnical analyses. The most likely conditions were assumed to the model. The mixture will not jeopardize surface water quality in terms of the concentrations of basic, hazardous or priority elements. The content of these elements also does not exceed permissible concentrations for groundwater. The conductance and pH of the eluates are in compliance with current laws. The solid mixture has favourable geotechnical parameters which are significantly dependent on moisture content. The slope stability calculations for embankments created from the mixture at optimum moisture content and high compaction (Is ≥ 0.95) indicate that they will be stable even in the case of high gradients (1:1.5). The slopes will be unstable in conditions of submersion, which should not occur if we assume the embankment will be used for passive flood protection

Opis:
Selected research polygon is located in Trzebinia commune in the mid of the 80 km way from Kraków to Katowice (the Upper Silesia capital). The towns of Trzebinia, Chrzanów within the towns of Krzeszowice, Jaworzno, Mysłowice, have been creating a base of well-connected Kraków-Upper Silesia agglomeration. The inhabitants of Trzebinia commune are flexible on labour market, often commute to work in Kraków or Katowice. They have detached houses with gardens of one or two acres size, where "home-made", fresh, low-processed food could be produced. At the same time the area of Trzebinia Community belongs to Chrzanów geochemical anomaly, which is reflected in high values of cadmium, lead and zinc contents in the soils. This is the result of both natural and anthropogenic factors. The purpose of the paper was to evaluate lead and iron contents in roots and leaves of parsley being cultivated within the area of the anomaly. Considering, there is a positive geochemical anomaly, the lead contents in soil were low - the average value was 88.67 mg kg -1 d.m. and only two contents -218.98 and 119.35 exceeded 100 mg kg -1 d.m. On the other hand the lead contents in parsley roots were high, many times higher than the allowable values. The lead contents in parsley leaves were also high. Phytoaccumulation indices low, only one had the average value, but at their minimal range (1.02 and 10.3 adequately for leaves and roots). Translocation index of lead was close to one. The iron contents in soils were not high and fall within the scope of low and average ranges that occur in Polish soils. The iron contents in leaves were high, attractive from nutrition point of view.
