The structure and hyperfine interactions in the Bi5Ti3FeO15, Bi6Ti3Fe2O18 and Bi7Ti3Fe3O21 multiferroic ceramics were studied using X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Samples were prepared by mechanical activation process in a high-energy ball mill from a mixture of TiO2, Fe2O3 and Bi2O3 oxides as polycrystalline precursor materials. The mechanical milling process was completed by thermal processing. A pure single-phased material was obtained in the case of Bi7Ti3Fe3O21 compound. The proposed mechanical activation technology allows to produce the Aurivillius compounds at lower temperature, by about 50 K, as compared to the solid-state sintering method.

Nanocrystalline samples of Fe$\text{}_{80}$Mo$\text{}_{20}$ and Fe$\text{}_{50}$Mo$\text{}_{50}$ alloys were prepared by the mechanical milling method. The structure, lattice parameters, and crystallite size were determined by the X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties of the milled products were determined by the M"ossbauer spectroscopy. It was observed that in the case of the Fe$\text{}_{80}$Mo$\text{}_{20}$ alloy a solid solution of Mo in Fe was formed with the lattice parameters of Fe increasing from 0.28659 nm to 0.29240 nm and the crystallite size decreasing from 250 nm to 20 nm. In the case of the Fe$\text{}_{50}$Mo$\text{}_{50}$ alloy there were no clear changes in values of the lattice parameters of Fe and Mo during the milling process, but the crystallite size decreased from 200 nm to 15 nm. Mössbauer spectra revealed different magnetic phases in the mechanosynthesized Fe-Mo samples. In the case of the Fe$\text{}_{80}$Mo$\text{}_{20}$ alloy, the spectrum for the milled mixture indicated the formation of a solid solution. In contrast, for the Fe$\text{}_{50}$Mo$\text{}_{50}$ the spectrum indicated the disappearance of the ferromagnetic phase.

Mechanical alloying method was used to synthesise powders of iron with tungsten and niobium. Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction have been applied to monitor the progress in solid-state reactions. In the case of Fe-W system, exhibiting a positive heat of mixing, no trace of amorphization was observed for 20 and 33 at.% of W, as the calculations of phase diagram (CALPHAD) method suggest. During the mechanical alloying process, two solid solutions Fe(W) and W(Fe) were obtained. Mössbauer measurements allowed to recognise the Fe(W) solid solution as a ferromagnetic phase, while the W(Fe) solid solution as a paramagnetic one. In the case of Fe-Nb system, exhibiting a negative heat of mixing, single phase amorphous alloys were synthesised during mechanical alloying of iron with 48 and 64 at.% of Nb. For both investigated compositions, the final products of mechanical alloying processes were amorphous paramagnetic alloys.

This paper presents the results of the study on structure and magnetic properties of the perovskite-type (BiFeO3)x-(BaTiO3)1-x solid solutions. The samples differing in the chemical composition (x = 0.9, 0.8, and 0.7) were produced according to the conventional solid-state sintering method from the mixture of powders. Moreover, three different variants of the fabrication process differing in the temperatures and soaking time were applied. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) were collected and compared for the set of the investigated materials. The structural transformation from rhombohedral to cubic symmetry was observed for the samples with x = 0.7. With increasing of BaTiO3 concentration Mössbauer spectra become broadened refl ecting various confi gurations of atoms around 57Fe probes. Moreover, gradual decreasing of the average hyperfi ne magnetic fi eld and macroscopic magnetization were observed with x decreasing.

Delafossite CuFeO₂ belongs to multiferroic class of materials. In this work, copper ferrite was prepared by mechanical activation with subsequent thermal treatment. X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy were used as complementary methods to study the structure and hyperfine interactions of the material. As proved by X-ray diffraction, CuFeO₂ compound was obtained with relatively low amount of secondary phases like CuO and CuFe₂O₄. The Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed paramagnetic character of the compound at room temperature. The purest delafossite CuFeO₂ was obtained by mechanical activation of pre-milled precursors and sintering at 1173 K. The temperature of thermal treatment is lower by 100 K as compared to the traditional solid-state synthesis.

Ternary Co-Fe-Ni alloys were prepared from the elemental powders by the mechanical alloying method. Structural properties and hyperfine interactions parameters were determined using X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction proved that during milling Co-Fe-based solid solutions with b.c.c. lattice were formed in the case of Co40Fe40Ni20 and Co50Fe40Ni10 alloys, while for Co52Fe26Ni22 and Co65Fe23Ni12 compositions Co-Ni-based solid solutions with f.c.c. lattice were obtained. Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed similar values of the average hyperfine magnetic fields for all the alloys. These values corresponded to the different surroundings of 57Fe isotopes by Co, Fe and Ni atoms, depending on the chemical composition of the alloy. The possible atomic configurations around 57Fe isotopes were discussed on the basis of the local environment model under the assumption that only the first nearest neighbours contribute to the hyperfine magnetic field at 57Fe site.

The simple co-precipitation method was used to prepare AgxFeO2 delafossite with non-stoichiometric silver concentration in the range of x = 0.05–1. The obtained material was investigated using X-ray powder diffraction and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy at room temperature. The structural and hyperfine interaction parameters were recognized in relation with decreasing silver concentration. The study revealed that the delafossite structure of AgxFeO2 was maintained up to x = 0.9; as the range of silver concentration was decreased to 0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.8, a mixture of AgFeO2, Fe2O3 or/and FeOOH was formed.

In this research, the mechanical activation method is proposed as an alternative process of preparation of the (BiFeO3)1–x-(BaTiO3)x solid solutions with various concentrations of barium titanate (x = 0.1÷0.9). However, mechanical milling itself does not allow obtaining the desired products and additional thermal treatment is needed to complete the solid-state reaction. In the present studies, X-ray diffraction and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy were applied as complementary methods in order to study the structural and magnetic properties of materials. The investigations revealed that an increase of BaTiO3 concentration causes changes in the crystalline and hyperfine magnetic structure of the studied (BiFeO3)1–x-(BaTiO3)x system.

X-ray diffraction and $\text{}^{57}Fe$ Mössbauer spectroscopy were applied as complementary methods to investigate the structure and hyperfine interactions of the Aurivillius compounds prepared by mechanical activation and subsequent heat treatment. Preliminary milling of precursors enhanced the diffusion process and pure Aurivillius compounds were obtained at lower temperature as compared with conventional solid-state sintering technology (lower at least by 50 K). All the investigated Aurivillius compounds are paramagnetic materials at room temperature.

Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy były badania oddziaływań nadsubtelnych w roztworach stałych żelazianu bizmutu - tytanianu baru o wzorze ogólnym (BiFe03)x-(BaTi0 3)1-x dla różnych koncentracji BiFe03 (x = 0,7; 0,8 i 0,9). Materiał badań otrzymano metodą swobodnego spiekania w temperaturach T = 1073-1103K. Przeprowadzone pomiary mossbauerowskie i dyfraktometryczne wykazują związek pomiędzy zawartością BiFe0 3 a właściwościami strukturalnymi i magnetycznymi elektroceramiki. Zależność parametrów oddziaływań nadsubtelnych od x nie jest bezpośrednio związana z przejściami fazowymi w badanych materiałach.
The aim of this article is to present the hyperflne interactions in the solid solutions of bismuth ferrite - barium titanate, described by the general formula (BiFe0 3)x-(BaTi0 3)1-x for different content of BiFe0 3 (x = 0,7; 0,8 and 0,9). The ceramics were synthesized at temperatures in the range of T = 1073-1103K by sintering method. The measurements of both Mossbauer spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction indicate the relationship between the content of BiFe03 and the properties of the electroceramics. However, the compositional dependence of the hyperflne interactions parameters does not harmonize with the phase transitions in this material.

This research specifically focused on the development of a novel methodology to reduce excess nitrate in drinking water utilizing zerovalent iron nanoparticles (nZVI)-stabilized radiation-grafted copolymer matrix. nZVI was synthesized by borohydrate reduction of FeCl3 and stabilized on acrylic acid (AAc)-grafted non-woven polyethylene/polypropylene (NWPE/PP-g-AAc) copolymer matrix, which was grafted using gamma radiation. The use of nZVI for environmental applications is challenging because of the formation of an oxide layer rapidly in the presence of oxygen. Therefore, radiation-grafted NWPE/PP synthetic fabric was used as the functional carrier to anchor nZVI and enhance its spreading and stability. The chemical reduction of nitrate by nZVI-adsorbed NWPE/PP-g-AAc (nZVI-Ads-NWP) fabric was examined in batch experiments at different pH values. At low pH values, the protective layers on nZVI particles can be readily dissolved, exposing the pure iron particles for efficient chemical reduction of nitrate. After about 24 h, at pH 3, almost 96% of nitrate was degraded, suggesting that this reduction process is an acid-driven, surface-mediated process. The nZVI-water interface has been characterized by the 1-pK Basic Stern Model (BSM). An Eley-Rideal like mechanism well described the nitrate reduction kinetics. In accordance with green technology, the newly synthesized nZVI-Ads-NWP has great potential for improving nitrate reduction processes required for the drinking water industry.

The structure and hyperfine interactions in the $Bi_{9}Ti_{3}Fe_{5}O_{27}$ Aurivillius compound were studied using X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Samples were prepared by the conventional solid-state sintering method at various temperatures. An X-ray diffraction analysis proved that the sintered compounds formed single phases at temperature above 993 K. Mössbauer measurements have been carried out at room and liquid nitrogen temperatures. Room-temperature Mössbauer spectrum of the $Bi_{9}Ti_{3}Fe_{5}O_{27}$ compound confirmed its paramagnetic properties. However, low temperature measurements revealed the additional paramagnetic phase besides the antiferromagnetic one.

Mechanical alloying was used to prepare $Co_{40}Fe_{60}$, $Co_{60}Fe_{35}Ni_{5}$, $Co_{40}Fe_{45}Ni_{15}$, and $Co_{40}Fe_{35}Ni_{25}$ alloys from the elemental powders. As X-ray diffraction studies proved the final products of milling were the solid solutions with bcc or fcc lattice and the average grain size between 20 and 50 nm. After heating of the alloys up to 993 K, the mixtures of two solid solutions with bcc and fcc lattices were formed in the case of Co-Fe-Ni alloys. Thermal treatment did not influence the type of the lattice of $Co_{40}Fe_{60}$ alloy. The Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed hyperfine magnetic field distribution ranged from 33 to 38 T for $Co_{40}Fe_{60}$ alloy and from 30 to 37 T for Co-Fe-Ni alloys. In the case of two-phase alloys, distributions were decomposed into two simple Gaussian functions using the numerical fitting. Magnetic measurements allowed to determine the effective magnetic moments and the Curie temperatures of the obtained alloys.

Three different methods were used to obtain Bi5Ti3FeO15 ceramics, i.e. solid-state sintering, mechanical activation (MA) with subsequent thermal treatment, and electrical discharge assisted mechanical milling (EDAMM). The structure and magnetic properties of producedBi5Ti3FeO15 samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The purest Bi5Ti3FeO15 ceramics was obtained by standard solid-state sintering method. Mechanical milling methods are attractive because the Bi5Ti3FeO15 compound may be formed at lower temperature or without subsequent thermal treatment. In the case of EDAMM process also the time of processing is significantly shorter in comparison with solid-state sintering method. As revealed by Mössbauer spectroscopy, at room temperature theBi5Ti3FeO15 ceramics produced by various methods is in paramagnetic state.
