- Introduction Nowadays many sportsmen, on the highest professional level as well, or people practicing sports on their own take shortcuts to achieve success in sports. It may be caused by the fact that the price of victory is constantly going up. Unfortunately the number of performance enhancing drugs available on the market is growing. The aim The aim of the study was to examine the level of awareness about doping with young people and adults who do or do not do any sports. Material and methods The study was conducted in January 2012 on students of X Secondary School in Cracow, Public Middle School in School Complex in Gromnik and students of State Higher Vocational School in their third year of studies in Physical Education. The fourth group consisted of people practicing gymnastics in Academic Sports Union club of Physical Education Academy in Cracow. The total number of people being tested was 240 people of both sexes including 92 secondary school students, 76 middle school students, 54 PE students and 18 people doing gymnastics. There were 158 women and 82 men ranging in age from 15 to 26. Only 20% of the people declared doing sports professionally and 25% were interested in recreational sports. 5% did not show any interest in any physical activity. An anonymous questionnaire comprising 26 questions was used as a research tool. Results 47% of women showed higher level of awareness of legal consequences for taking doping compared with 44% of men. Again in case of medical consequences of doping abuse women showed better knowledge (66,5%) by comparison with men (58,5%). The men present higher level of awareness (50%) about performance enhancing drugs. The results of the completed research project reveals a satisfactory level of knowledge about doping abuse in sports in all tested groups. Conclusions 1. The competitors who do gymnastics show slightly higher level of awareness about doping abuse in sports in comparison with the students of PE in their third year of studies. 2. The women are to some extent better informed on drug abuse in sports than the men. 3. At school lessons (including PE) the information about doping in sports is provided very rarely.
