Opis:
The article deals with the specificity of modern historiographic methods used by film historians connected with the worldwide formation labeled New Film History that started in the mid-1980s. The main thesis focuses on notions associated with a variety of historical sources, re-visions that contradict classic film history and the importance of close-readings including the cultural contexts of the film as art, as well as a medium of audiovisual communication.

Opis:
How traditional arts are used and adapted by film? In what ways do they correspond and cooperate as structural elements supporting a fully coherent piece of film? These fundamental questions open many areas of film research. The paper examines three competing definitions of cinema as polimorfic art and gives overview of various versions and modes of coexistence of arts in film. Author argues that ambivalence is evidenced between policy of adapting established arts and policy of modelling new art by filmmakers. The role of film practice in orchestrating individual strategies is used to highlight this ambivalence. Aspirations good for one separate art can be wrong for film as specific medium and kind of art. „The play’s the thing”. As far as symbiosis of many different arts is important for cinema, culture of adaptation remains key question in film practice and filmmaking.

Opis:
The semiotic mechanism of representing time present in documentary film has remained the same since the 19th century up to this very day. This is governed without exception in the cinematographic “message” by the choice and combination of visual and audio elements shown on the screen, together with the process of fragmentation and segmentation of images in respect to the reality being communicated. The nature of information contained in the moving pictures is one of communicating integrated experiences of the world, and experiences of civilization and culture. Thus conceptualised, information and the process of informing have a dimension that is par excellence anthropological. There in fact lies the broadly understood process of experience on the part of man and society - regardless of the changeability and ad hoc nature of the subjects raised in a given piece of subject matter - representing each time its ‘what’ and ‘how’. Regardless of the means of film expression used, there is always the same point of significance: the difference in the potential between what is known and that which is unknown. That is why the creative documentary proves on each occasion to be a mutual discovery of both known and unknown reality - one shared by the filmmaker and audience.

The Methodological Problems of Studies on the History of Polish Postwar Documentary The author discusses the narratives and stereotypical (ideological) point of view as a matrix for constructing an overly simple image of the Polish documentary in the postwar period (1944–1955) as shadowed in the untruth of political discourse. In Marek Hendrykowski’s opinion this particular period in Polish documentary film was much more complicated and multi perspectived (in a “dialogical” sense) as a research object posing new questions and opening new perspectives for film historians.

Opis:
The article’s author, based on various examples taken from the European documentary tradition, seeks to determine how the particular position of a new generation of found footage films is allocated and viewed in Polish cinemas and in relation to Polish contemporary audiovisual culture. Marek Hendrykowski redefines film editing (found footage film, compilation) as a historical narrative with its own, attractive poetics and successful way of negotiating its prestige and popularity in the public sphere.

Łódź
Opis:
Łódź is often called “the capital of Polish film”. The cultural history of this town from the end of World War Two to the present day is closely connected with the movie industry. Marek Hendrykowski’s study on Łódź as a cinematic city offers the first comprehensive critical guide to the many films, interviews, published writings and individual memoirs of the Film School’s students and professors. This panoramic view presents the process of the historical transformation of cinematic images from Łódź between 1945 and 2013, as well as the profound influence this town had on many filmmakers. It serves as a reference work that will allow readers to navigate the subject’s wide range of examples: from Antoni Bohdziewicz, Jerzy Bossak, Kazimierz Kutz and Andrzej Wajda to Krzysztof Kieślowski, Wojciech Wiszniewski, Janusz Kijowski and Polish filmmakers of new generation.
