Opis:
At the end of 2013, Norway spruce stands in the area of the Tatra National Park were severely damaged by strong storms especially in the Kościeliska Valley region. In the following spring of 2014, a survey recording the occurrence of the spruce bark beetle Ips typographus (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Scolytinae) was initiated in order to describe the dynamics of beetle reproduction in relation to protection measures executed in wind-damaged stands. Ten research plots with 20 trees each were established in a so-called active protection zone, where the broken and fallen trees had been processed and removed in 2014, and in a passive protection zone, where no actions were taken, and the dynamics of Norway spruce mortality due to bark beetle infestation including quantitative parameters (infestation density, sex ratio of beetle populations) were examined. The entomological analyses were performed on 25×25 cm large bark samples taken from four (active zone) or two (passive zone) tree sections. In the first year of the survey, no infested standing trees were recorded on the plots and the colonisation of fallen and broken trees was very weak. In the second year (2015), infestations appeared in larger numbers on the plots with passive compared to active protection but the infestation density was 0.89 mating chambers per 1 dm2 regardless of the protection status. In the third year (2016), most of the remaining living spruces had been infested with a mean density of 0.82 m.ch. per 1 dm2. In 2015, the proportion of females in the beetle population was 65.8% being higher in the active (68.4%) than the passive (64.0%) protection zone, while in 2016 the proportion was 63.5% and in this case slightly higher in the passive protection zone (63.9% as compared to 63.2%). These results are in accordance with patterns observed in wind-damaged Norway spruce stands of other areas in Poland and Europe and demonstrate the usefulness of forest management procedures in mitigating I. typographus outbreaks.

Opis:
In the end of 2013 the Norway spruce stands in the Kościelska Valley in the Tatra National Park (S Poland) were severely damaged by the wind. In the next year about 22,000 m3 of timber from broken and fallen trees was processed and removed from the active protection zone, whilst in the strict protection zone those trees were left. In 2014, when the presented survey started, the infestation of lying and surrounding standing trees was very low, but starting from 2015 an intensive bark beetle Ips typographus outbreak affected the survived stands. No−intervention strategy was implemented by the national park in both zones, regardless their formal status at that time as well. In 2015 a set of 10 observation plots (200 trees in total) was established in both active and passive (strict) protection zones (5 plots in each zone). In 2017 a new set of 12 plots (240 trees in total) was installed (6 plots in each zone). On each plot the breast height diameter of all trees was measured and the relative mortality of trees (share of attacked spruces) was recorded each year. The infestation density and sex ratio were defined on the 25×25 cm bark samples taken from 138 trees in 2 trunk sections located 1.5−2.0 above the ground and in the midway between tree and crown bases. The bark beetle attack on living spruces in 2015 differed between the active and strict protection zones. The relative tree mortality was lower in active than in passive protection zone (20 and 39% respectively), but later it gradually came to be similar in both parts of the area (73.3 and 77.5%, respectively in 2017). In the initial outbreak phase, thinner (weaker) trees were attacked, and in the following years – stronger ones, although in the active protection zone the opposite pattern occurred initially. The attack density decreased in subsequent years, being higher in active protection zone, with gradually decreasing difference between zones. Thicker trees were attacked with lower intensity. The share of females, higher in active protection zone (68.2 vs. 63.9%), gradually decreased to (57.9 vs. 51.2%). The initial decrease of bark beetle attack intensity in the active protection zone gradually disappeared after the no−intervention strategy was applied. The resulting extended bark beetle infestation and its increasing intensity in both parts of the area, demonstrate the appropriateness and effectiveness of active protection measures applied in 2014.

Opis:
A monitoring network was set up in 2002 in order to define the distribution range of Ips duplicatus in mountain Norway spruce stands in southern Poland. Borregard pipe traps baited with synthetic pheromone Duplodor (Chemipan, Poland) were installed on 70 locations situated above 600 m a.s.l. in Carpathians and Sudeten. The occurrence of I. duplicatus was confirmed in 17 locations in the western part of Carpathians, including those located around 1000 m a.s.l., while no beetles were caught in the eastern Carpathians nor in the Sudeten. The distribution range in Polish mountains is adjacent to those in northern Slovakia and northern Moravia (Czech republic).

Bialowieża Forest
Opis:
Spruce bark beetle Ips typographus (L.) (Col.: Curculionidae, Scolytinae) outbreaks occur in managed and protected forests alike, but although known of for a long time, management and control of this insect is a controversial subject due to the forests’ diverse nature and protection status. In this paper, an overview of the bark beetle, conditions leading to outbreaks, natural enemies and the efficiency of control measures is presented and put into perspective with regards to the current controversies concerning outbreak management. The Białowieża Primeval Forest is central to this discussion, because the area remains divided into parts with different nature protection statuses. Ideas concerning the current but also future outbreak progress and possible issues with the management of natural resources in this area are presented.

Opis:
In 2011–2013, trials on the use of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana against bark beetle (Ips typographus) populations were carried out under open field conditions in Norway spruce stands suffering from an outbreak in the Beskid Żywiecki Mts. in Poland. Modified pheromone traps were deployed to capture and thereafter release fungus-infected bark beetles to the forest environment. Infested spruce trees felled next to the traps remained unaffected by the transmission of the fungus to insect populations. Direct spraying or dusting of lying trap logs and suspended caged rearing bolts did not have any effect on spruce infestation by I. typographus, its reproduction success and development or natural enemies inside the bark. A very small effect on mortality rates of target as well as non-target insects overwintering in the dusted litter was observed. Treated stands, unlike control stands, were indirectly affected by the treatment, evidenced by the reduction of tree mortality due to bark beetle infestation. At present, no recommendations concerning the potential use of the fungus in forest protection can be given. However such an environmentally friendly approach represents a promising future prospect.

Opis:
The lack of effective methods of forest protection against bark beetles in Norway spruce stands was the reason for undertaking the studies aimed at the assessment of efficacy of pheromone traps Trinet P that act as an ‘attract and kill' system to reduce the population of spruce bark beetle Ips typographus (Col.: Curculionidae: Scolytinae). The Trinet P trap consists of a triangular stand, on which the net containing alpha−cypermethrin is stretched. Each trap is baited by the synthetic pheromone attracting I. typographus beetles, which fly towards the trap and die due to the contact with the net coated with insecticide. The experiments were conducted in 2011−2012 on 6 experimental plots located in 26−82−years−old Norway spruce stands in Beskid Sądecki Mts. (southern Poland) that were threatened with the bark beetles. The experimental plot consisted of 100 m long stand edge exposed to bark beetle attack, with set of 5 traps installed in line. Similar stand edges without traps were used as control. The experiments were assumed before the I. typographus swarming, i.e. at the turn of April and May of each year. The treatment efficacy was estimated after 5 months by counting infested trees on plots with treatment and control variants. In the most cases the protective effect expressed by significantly lower number of infested trees on the edges with Trinet P traps. The symptoms of infestation by I. typographus were found up to 20% of trees in the stands protected with the Trinet P traps, while more than 80% of trees were attacked by the spruce bark beetle on the control plots. Despite these differences, the infestation density of trees in the stands protected and unprotected with traps was similar. No effect on non−target organisms was observed. The effectiveness of Trinet P traps is similar as of commonly used pheromone traps, thus this novel device can be used for the protection of Norway spruce stands against I. typographus.
