Opis:
The aim of the paper is to discuss the socio‑economic effects of the international migration of Poles in light of their careers. The analysis is based on quantitative comprehensive data extracted from both public statistics and dedicated local surveys drawn from local communities with high density of migration, as well as from qualitative studies devoted to occupational biographies and social remittances of migrants. The author shows differentiations of occupational careers of migrants and sedentary local populations, and various profiles of transitions from the Polish education to the foreign labour market. She also seeks an answer to the question what Polish migrants bring from migration beyond money, and how migration impacts human capital.

Opis:
Human capital is one of the factors which impact one’s occupational life. On the one hand, having gone abroad, migrants are not always able to utilise the non-pecuniary capital accumulated in Poland prior to migration. On the other hand, during their stay abroad migrants can obtain various types of capital, including human capital in the form of knowledge, skills and competencies. This capital can impact their occupational life after return. However, this impact is conditioned by various factors, both structural and individual. As demonstrated through the analyses of the life histories of Polish return migrants, the transferability and employability of capital acquired abroad highly depends on the opportunity structures migrants face upon return. According to migrants, the capital transferred to Poland is rarely connected to specifi c occupational skills obtained abroad, but more often to social competencies which facilitate their operating in the, usually harsher, Polish labour market.

Opis:
Purpose – This paper aims to investigate the interplay between international migration, soft skills and job and life satisfaction after returns. Design/methodology/approach – The paper uses the dataset of Human Capital in Poland 2010–2014 representative surveys with 4040 return migrants, who worked temporarily abroad and returned to an origin in comparison with almost 70,000 stayers, who never worked abroad. In this study, Poland is treated as a strategic research site for the labor migration processes, which happened after the biggest European Union enlargement in 2004. Findings – This study discovered that working abroad had a positive relation with cognitive, intrapersonal and interpersonal competencies, as well as job and life satisfaction. However, the relations differ depending on the key destination country. Practical implications – his study discusses the implications for future research and practice, offering recommendations to organizations on how to embed employees with these resources in companies and how to support return migrants and their potential employers with the use of migratory informal human capital in personnel management and counseling. Originality/value – This paper brings quantitative arguments about the hidden impacts of international migration on human capital by uniquely comparing the migrant population with the non-migrant population.
