    The purpose of this paper is to analyse and interpret family life as an area of individuals’ emotional work and investments. The perspective of the above mentioned analysis is designated by the sociology of mental health. Relationships within a family have undeniable influence on the state of people’s mental health. These relationships can be a source of support as well as emotional burden. Families can either compensate for the social stress individuals experience due to processes at the macro level or enhance the emotional tension resulting from social stress. The main method used in this study is meta-analysis of epidemiological and clinical data concerning the mental health of the global (WHO) and Polish population (EZOP-Poland) and my own research – a nationwide, representative survey (N=1,000) carried out in Poland, which was part of a broader theoretical and empirical project devoted to the process of social construction of the categories of mental health, disease and disorder in late modern society. I also refer to my qualitative research including twenty in-depth interviews with psychologists, psychiatrists and psychotherapists who had experience in carrying out family, couples and individual therapy. The research objective was to find out whether and in what way some issues described from the socio-cultural perspective manifest themselves in the form of problems with which people turn to psychotherapists. The analysis and interpretation of data from the above mentioned sources enable us to put forward a thesis that living within a family entails not necessarily an alternative (either emotional burden or support), but a conjunction (both emotional burden and support). In this context the practical solutions that enable families to protect and strengthen the individual’s mental health should be searched for.

    This article locates itself within the field of social studies with a special focus on the overlap between sociology and psychology. It attempts to answer the question to what extent the problems affecting the mental health of women and men reflect certain constructions of gender that function in modern society. The empirical basis of the article is data obtained during in-depth interviews with psychotherapists. This data was analyzed in accordance with the rules of the Grounded Theory Method. The research shows that gender is a category commonly used in summaries and interpretations of experiences of individuals. The analysis of the research material makes it possible to identify the most important problems of mental health of women and men, and to deduce directions and mechanisms of changes in gender schemes realized by women and men.
    Niniejszy artykuł sytuuje się w ramach nauk społecznych ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem pogranicza socjologii oraz psychologii. Jego celem jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, na ile problemy zdrowia psychicznego kobiet i mężczyzn odzwierciedlają określone konstrukcje płci społeczno-kulturowej funkcjonujące we współczesnym społeczeństwie. Podstawę empiryczną artykułu stanowią dane uzyskane na podstawie wywiadów pogłębionych z psychoterapeutami. Dane te były analizowane zgodnie z zasadami metodologii teorii ugruntowanej. Z przeprowadzonych badań wynika, że płeć społeczno-kulturowa stanowi kategorię powszechnie stosowaną w celu podsumowań oraz interpretacji doświadczeń osób badanych. Analiza materiału badawczego pozwoliła również wyodrębnić najistotniejsze problemy zdrowia psychicznego kobiet i mężczyzn oraz wnioskować o kierunkach i mechanizmach zmian schematów płci społeczno-kulturowej realizowanych przez kobiety i mężczyzn

    One of the main traits of a society of reflexive modernity is the critical analysis of categories that in the past appeared unquestionable. Socio-cultural gender and health or illness/mental disorders are categories of this type. Above all, they are socially constructed, that is, they are dependent on culture and on political, economic, and religious factors. The author undertakes to analyse the relations between the diagnostic criteria used in the international system of classifying mental diseases (DSM-IV and ICD-10) and traditional schemas of masculinity and femininity. Confirmation of the incidence of particular diseases in connection with gender is the author’s entry point for seeking answers to why individuals suffering from certain illnesses/mental disorders display behaviour corresponding to traditional gender roles, even though contemporary gender roles are fluid in many respects, and hypotheses about biological differences as causes of incidence of disease in men and women have not been empirically confirmed

    Opis:
    Celem artykułu jest analiza poznawczych i emocjonalnych aspektów procesu przystosowania do sytuacji choroby psychicznej w rodzinie. Pomiędzy wyżej wymienionymi aspektami istnieją zależności w postaci dodatnich i ujemnych sprzężeń zwrotnych. Istotnym elementem adaptacji poznawczej jest konstruowanie kategorii „choroby psychicznej” oraz „zdrowia psychicznego” tworzących ramy interpretacji przeżywanych doświadczeń. Proces ten jest uzależniony od uprzednich stanów afektywnych i wpływa na dalsze doświadczenia emocjonalne, zwrotnie oddziałując na aktywność poznawczą. Orientację teoretyczną i metodologiczną niniejszego opracowania wyznacza podejście konstruktywistyczne. Podstawę empiryczną prezentowanej analizy stanowią badania przeprowadzone w oparciu o metodologię teorii ugruntowanej. Badania te sprowadzają się do analizy i interpretacji opublikowanych narracji biograficznych członków rodzin osób zmagających się z chorobą psychiczną (Stark, Bremer, Esterer 2002; Stowarzyszenie Rodzin i Przyjaciół Osób Mniejszych Szans „Więź” b.d.). Przeprowadzona analiza dotyczyła zarówno treści wypowiadanych przez narratorów, jak i charakterystycznych sposobów kategoryzowania doświadczeń. W efekcie przeprowadzonych badań odtworzony został proces przystosowania do sytuacji choroby psychicznej w rodzinie wraz z jego wariantami, głównymi etapami i punktami zwrotnymi.
    This paper is aiming at an analysis of some aspects of the process of cognitive and emotional adaptation to the situation of mental illness within family. There have been observed mutual relations between the abovementioned aspects. The significant component of the cognitive adaptation process is the construction of categories of mental disease and mental health, which constitute the frames of interpretation of one’s experience. This process depends on one’s affective states and influences further emotional condition, which provides feedback to cognitive processes at a more advanced stages. Theoretical and methodological frameworks of this paper are based on the constructionist paradigm. The empirical research has been carried out according to the grounded theory assumptions. The research material consists of intentionally constructed and published (in a book and online) biographical narrations of mentally ill persons’ family members. The analysis of the abovementioned narrations is focused on the content, as well as on the forms of descriptions constructed by the relatives of the mentally ill persons. According to the presented analysis, the process of adaptation to the situation of mental illness within family, with its variations, stages, and turning points, has been reconstructed.
