Opis:
Fifteen bryozoan species belonging to thirteen genera have been identified from an outcrop of the Picos de Europa Formation (Moscovian, Upper Carboniferous) at La Hermida in northern Spain. Three species and one genus are new— Coscinium hermidensissp. nov., Cystodictya pustulosa sp. nov., and Cystocladia hispanica gen. et sp. nov. Rhabdomesid bryozoans are the most diverse order with seven species, followed by cystoporids (four species), fenestellids (three species) and trepostomids (one species). Bryozoans with erect branched or reticulate colonies dominate in the studied assemblage; only two species possess encrusting colonies. Together with associated crinoids, the bryozoan assemblage indicates a subtidal environment below the zone of vigorous water movement. The La Hermida bryozoan fauna confirms the Upper Carboniferous age of the Picos de Europa Formation and allows various biogeographical interpretations. All previously known species of the genus Coscinium were reported from the Lower Permian of Russia. Clausotrypa monticola is known from the Lower Permian of Russia and Arctic as well as from the Upper Carboniferous of Carnic Alps (Austria). Rhabdomeson cf. propatulissimum and Penniretepora pseudotrilineata are known from the same level of Italian Carnic Alps. Streblotrypa (Streblascopora) nikiforovae and Rhombocladia punctata are known from the Upper Carboniferous (Moscovian) of Ukraine. Fistulipora petaloida is known from Kasimovian Stage of Russian Plate. Several other species show connections with North America.

Opis:
The trepostome bryozoan Dyscritella microstoma Ernst, 2001 is reported for the first time from the Zechstein Main Dolomite (Ca2) of Poland and Germany. This species has been previously recognized in the older fossiliferous Zechstein Lime stone (Ca1) of the North Sudetic Basin (Poland) and in the northern part of Germany. The Polish specimens derive from a few boreholes located in the Pomerania region and in the Wolsztyn High, both in the western part of Poland. The German material comes from a borehole on Rügen Island in North eastern Germany. The present paper deals with the taxonomic description of D. microstoma and its distribution in the Main Dolomite deposits.

Opis:
An unusual cystoporate bryozoan from the Middle Devonian (Givetian) Ahbach Formation of the Hillersheim Syncline (Eifel, Rhenish Massif, Germany) is described as Stellatoides muellertchensis gen. et sp. nov. The lamellar colonies have elongate stellate maculae with depressed centres consisting of vesicular skeleton. All colonies collected contain vertical axial tubular holes, which are embedment structures formed by the bryozoan around a soft-bodied symbiont and lined by bryozoan skeleton. These bioclaustrations are referred to the ichnogenus Chaetosalpinx, previously known in Ordovician– Devonian corals and sponges, and are described as Chaetosalpinx tapanilai ichnosp. nov. Ecological analogues to Chaetosalpinx tapanilai can be found in modern bryozoans in which tubes formed of bryozoan calcite are occupied by spionid polychaetes, or less often tanaidacean crustaceans.

Opis:
This is the first report of encrusted cryptic surfaces in the Ordovician of Estonia. Only bryozoans and cornulitids occurred in nautiloids and trilobites. Bryozoans were the dominant encrusters, in terms of both the number of specimens and the encrustation area. Stalked echinoderms are common on the hardgrounds in the Middle and Upper Ordovician of Baltica, but the restricted space in nautiloid living chambers and trilobites probably prevented colonization by stalked echinoderms. Cryptic surfaces in nautiloids and trilobites usually are somewhat more encrusted than the open surfaces of hardgrounds in the Ordovician of Estonia. Encrusters presumably favoured cryptic surfaces, as these were less accessible for predators and grazers. Low encrustation densities, compared to North American hard substrates, seem to be characteristic for the Ordovician Baltic Basin.

Opis:
We studied the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of Sm-doped Bi₂Se₃ using a GGA approximation in a frame of the fully relativistic spin-polarized Dirac linear muffin-tin orbital band-structure method. The X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Sm M_{4,5} edges were investigated theoretically from first principles. The calculated results are in good agreement with experimental data. The complex fine structure of the Sm M_{4,5} XAS in Sm-doped Bi₂Se₃ was found to be not compatible with a pure Sm³⁺ valency state. The interpretation demands mixed valent states.
