Opis:
Classical arabo-islamic culture. Basic issues The article begins with an attempt to define the concept of Arabic and Islamic culture. Therefore its main purpose is to present the beginnings of Islam, Islamic community (umma) and the basic elements of Islamic faith and their nature. The most significant feature of the Arab-Islamic culture is its strong connection with the Islamic law – sharia, based on the Koran and Sunna. For this reason the presentation of its principles takes an important place in this text. The Islamic law determines all sides of this civilisation in macro and micro scale. It plays a crucial role in the development of the state, but also in the behavior of the ordinary man. The other point of interest in this article is the development of sciences in the Islamic world in the classical period. The classical or Medieval Arabo-Islamic culture developed subsequently in a specific way. The reevaluation of this development is currently an important axis of analyses in Arabic and Islamic studies.

Opis:
Muḥammad Ibn Aḥmad Akansūs belongs to the most outstanding Moroccan writers of the 19th Century and was also very active in the social and political life of his times. He was a historian and religious writer, but in Morocco itself he is known above all as a poet, though his dīwān has not been edited until this day. Most of his poems are known from the works of other authors and from his own books devoted to history and religion. His most important work is without doubt the chronicle entitled Al-µayš al-ʻaramram al-ẖumāsī fi dawlat Mawlānā ʻAlī as-Siǧilmāsī (“Innumerable Fivefold Army or About the State of Our Lord ʻAlī as-Siǧilmāsī”). Furthermore he is the author of several treatises about Sufism (especially about the Tiǧāniyya brotherhood) and of an extensive collection of letters written to outstanding personalities of his times devoted mainly to religious problems. His historical, religious and literary output has until today not been presented in the West besides the book of É. Lévi-Provençal entitled Les historiens des chorfa. Essai sur la littérature historique et biographique au Maroc du XVIe au XXe siécle (Paris 1922).

Opis:
The article is devoted to Aḥmad al-Kardūdī, a Moroccan official in the second half of the nineteenth century, and his state and diplomatic activities, with particular emphasis on the account he wrote for Sultan Al-Ḥasan I (ruled 1873–1894) from the 1885 expedition to Spain, which had been published for the first time in 1963 under the title At-Tuḥfa as-saniyya li-al-Ḥaḍra al- Ḥasaniyya bi-al-Mamlaka al-Iṣbanyūliyya [Shining Gift for His Majesty Al- Ḥasan about the Kingdom of Spain]. This report often is included into Arab travel literature. It is not only a report on the tasks that the ruler set before the diplomatic mission of which Al-Kardūdī was a member, but also an image of the social and political consciousness of Moroccan elites associated with power of the West in times of active attempt at reforms undertaken by the ruler. Unfortunately, these attempts had little effect. The delegation was received in audience by Regent Maria Krystyna, also visited the capital of Spain and the most important Andalusian cities, but the author himself, probably on the orders of the Sultan, was also very interested in the military achievements of the Spaniards. The Gift, written in rhyming and rhythmic prose, can be treated as a literary work (although the author probably did not intend to), and simultaneously an example of an original, official, court document in the shape of a diplomatic report addressed to the ruler.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the beginnings and religious practice of the Sufi Nāṣiriyya brotherhood, a branch of Šāḏiliyya. The brotherhood was established in the 17th century in southern Morocco, and its main religious and intellectual center from the very beginning was the town of Tāmkrūt, where a zāwiya still exists today with its famous library of manuscripts. The brotherhood was founded by Maḥammad Ibn Nāṣir, known as Ibn Nāṣir ad-Darʻī (1603–1674), whose son established the central role of Tāmkrūt and can thus be regarded as the founder of this ṭarīqa. He continued the work of his father, and Nāṣiriyya spread fairly quickly across the Maghrib as its followers also created zāwiyas in today’s Tunisia and Algeria. Although Nāṣiriyya’s roots go back as far as the son of Abū Ṭālib, Ǧaʿfar, it is an orthodox Sunni brotherhood that adheres to the Maliki law school, strongly connected to the central authorities of Morocco. The article also presents the figure of Ibn Nāṣir, a widely recognized mystic and theologian, and a Muslim lawyer. His main work is Al-Aǧwiba an-Nāṣiriyya [“An-Nāṣirī’s Response”] a text of predominantly legal character. However, his prayer in verse, known widely as Sayf Ibn Nāṣir [“The Sword of Ibn Nāṣir”] is especially popular. The article also dedicates a few paragraphs to his son, Aḥmad al-Ḫalīfa. Further in the article, an outline is provided concerning the mystical rituals of Nāṣiriyya, originating from the brotherhood’s founder.
