Opis:
The article presents physicochemical, thermal and spectroscopic properties of two different glass systems: TeO2-GeO2-PbO-PbF2- BaO-Nb2O5-LaF3 and SiO2-Al2O3-Sb2O3, co-doped with Yb3+/Tm3+ ions. Blue upconversion luminescence at a wavelength of 478 nm corresponding to the thulium 1G43H6 transition was observed under 976 nm pump radiation in both of the co-doped glasses. This indicated the existence of efficient Yb3+ ⇥ Tm3+ energy transfer via three-photon absorption mechanism. Thermal and optical results substantiate the claim for practical applicability of the manufactured glasses in design of optical fiber sources.

Opis:
Tm3+/Ho3+ – doped antimony-silicate optical fibre with 2.1 ěm emission has been presented. Luminescence corresponding to 5I7 --> 5I8 transition in holmium was obtained by energy transfer between Tm3+ and Ho3+ ions. The analysis of the luminescence mechanism showed a significant influence of the glass composition (low phonon content) on the emission intensity. Optimization of the active elements content, presented in the paper, allowed to indicate that a strong emission intensity at 2 ěm in the fabricated glasses was obtained for the molar composition of 1% Tm2O3 : 0.75% Ho2O3. According to the F¨orster-Dexter theory, the efficiency of energy transfer of the 3F4 (Tm3+) --> 5I7 (Ho3+) transition was calculated. Moreover, it was found that the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of luminescence in the range of 1.6 – 2.2 ěm strongly depends on the Tm3+/Ho3+ ratio. The optimization of Tm3+/Ho3+ transfer in antimony-silicate glasses allowed to fabricate optical fibre with narrowing and red-shifting of emission at 2.1 ěm.

Opis:
In the article the cooperative energy transfer in GeO₂-GaO-BaO glass system doped with $Yb^{3+}//Tb^{3+}$ under 980 nm laser diode excitation was investigated. The influence of $Tb^{3+}$ concentration on the luminescent properties was determined. Measured strong luminescence at 489, 543, 586, 621 corresponds to $\text{}5D_4 \rightarrow \text{}^7 F_{J} $ (J = 6, 4, 3) transitions and luminescence at 381, 415, 435 nm results from $\text{}5 D_3, \text{}^5 G_6 \rightarrow \text{}^7 F_{J}$ (J = 6, 5, 4) transitions. Mechanism and energy diagram involved in observed emission were discussed. The highest upconversion emission intensity was obtained in the germanate glass doped with 0.7Yb₂O₃/0.7Tb₂O₃.

Opis:
In the article there are presented two different series of glass: fluorophosphate with molar composition: $65P_2O_5-8Al_2O_3-$ $2BaO-5BaF_2-6ZnF_2-$ $5Na_2O-$ $6MgF_2-3B_2O_3$ and antimony glasses $40Sb_2O_3-$ $3Al_2O_3-$ $57SiO_2$ doped with $Nd^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ ions. Dopant contents influence efficient spatial overlapping of emission level for neodymium and absorption level for ytterbium was analyzed. While exciting the produced glasses with a laser diode (λ = 808 nm) a broad luminescence spectrum (Δλ = 100 nm) has been obtained in both cases in the vicinity of 1 μm, being the superposition of the following transitions: $\text{}^4F_{3//2} \rightarrow {\text{}^4I_{11//2}}$ for $Nd^{3+}$ and $\text{}^2F_{5//2} \rightarrow {\text{}^2F_{7//2}}$ for $Yb^{3+}$. Based on the luminescence measurements the probability of non-radiative energy transfer was described. Because of a small difference in energy ( ≈1190 $cm^{-1}$) between the laser levels of neodymium and ytterbium the resonant process of energy transfer has been obtained.

Opis:
The paper concentrates on the optical fibre sensors of electric current intensity. The specially elaborated glasses with high values of refractive indices were investigated in the prepared testing stand. The glasses have possessed the refractive index values n in the range 1.6 ≤ n ≤ 2.2. For the glasses the values of the Verdet constants for two waveguides: $λ_1$ = 635 nm and $λ_2$ = 1550 nm were determined. The obtained results showed that the elaborated on the base of new glasses optical fibres are much more sensitive on the action of magnetic field than the silica fibres.

Opis:
The article brings into focus the present state of technology employing active fibres doped with rare earth (RE) ions for applications requiring power supply of several dozen watts and broadband ASE sources. Current trends in development of glasses and in construction of active fibres used in fibre sources of radiation within VIS-NIR range are presented. Technological constraints in the doping of fibre core glasses are discussed, with particular consideration of optimal RE concentration for technical applications. Characteristics of glasses are offered, and the glasses are used for manufacturing optical fibres with luminescence within the visible as well as near- and mid-infrared ranges. Also, requirements and luminescence properties concerning glasses co-doped with e.g. Nd3+/Yb3+,Tm3+/Ho3+ and Yb3+/Tb3+ are discussed. Results of research on the impact of technological parameters of glass matrices on luminescence properties of core glasses and optical fibres are quoted. For the doped glasses of which luminescence in a wide spectral range is desired, conditions for their processing into optical fibre systems are mentioned. Additionally, the impact of phonon energy in the glass on producing emission in a specified spectral range is analyzed. Furthermore, the article presents directions of technological studies to solve problems persisting in the phase of glass matrix design, as well as in determining the influence of fibre drawing process on the luminescence properties of core glasses and optical fibres, confirming the differences in luminescence stemming from the drawing process. Finally, some original designs of core glasses and active multicore fibre systems devised for construction of fibre radiation sources are presented.

In the paper the spectroscopic properties of antimony-germanate glass co-doped with $Yb^{3+}//Ho^{3+}$ has been investigated. Fabricated $Yb^{3+}//Tm^{3+}/Ho^{3+}$ co-doped glass is characterised by the emission of simultaneous multicolour upconversion luminescence. Strong blue $\text{}^{1}G_{4} \rightarrow \text{}^{3}H_{6}(Tm^{3+})$, green $\text{}^{5}F_{4} \rightarrow \text{}^{5}I_{8}(Ho^{3+})$ and red $\text{}^{5}F_{5} \rightarrow \text{}^{5}I_{8}(Ho^{3+})$ upconversion emission bands have been measured under 976 nm excitation at room temperature. Influence of molar ratio of active ions and excitation power on the colour coordinates (CIE-1931) have been investigated.

We present some recent results obtained by our team in rare earth doped photonic glasses and confined structures, in order to give some highlights regarding the state of art in glass photonics. To evidence the unique properties of transparent glass ceramics we compare spectroscopic and structural properties between the parent glass and the glass ceramics. Starting from planar waveguides we move to spherical microresonators, a very interesting class of photonic confined structures. We also conclude the short review with some remarks about the perspective for glass photonics.
