    In 1860 a guide to scientific studies in Paris to youth was published through the efforts of Polish emigrants in France. This book was written by the students of the Polish School in Paris. The article analyzes information about the subjects in the undergraduate and the teaching of geology at the university, National Museum of Natural History and engineering schools, principally École des Mines. The interest of this guide is not limited therefore to the history of Polish-French scientific relations. Many Polish geologists and engineers working in South America, including Ernest Malinowski (1818-1899), Ignacy Domeyko (1802-1889), Edward Habich, Aleksander Babinski (1823-1899), Władysław Folkierski (1841-1904), have been trained in Paris. The edition of this book is also valuable evidence of a rich scientific activity of the Polish political emigration in France.

    The paper presents research findings on the stay and scientific work of Pierre Berniard in Poland. This French chemist lived in Poland for about twenty years in the late eighteenth century. He was hired as a scientist by the rich aristocratic Wielopolski family from Pińczów. The authors analysed his publications and unpublished correspondence with Jean Hermann, a scholar and the founder of Cabinet of Natural History in Strasbourg. They have identified a large network of Berniard’s scientific correspondents and his contribution to geology. The existence of a written account of his stay in Poland, now lost, was raised by his letters to Hermann.

    New data on Balthasar (Belsazar) Hacquet (1739–1815), French traveller, naturalist, geologist and Professor of the Universities in Lviv and Cracow, in the light of some unpublished documents of the French and German archives Balthasar Hacquet, French physician and naturalist, Austrian army officer and inspector of mines in this country, has marked the history of natural science. Also as Professor of the Universities in Lviv and Cracow, he distinguished himself in many disciplines (botany, geology, anthropology and medicine), and particularly in the descriptions of the nature of the Carpathians and the Alps. This important person in the République des savants does not have the place in the contemporary historiography of science. His correspondence with French naturalists Georges Cuvier and Philippe-Isidore Picot de Lapeyrouse, as well as his autobiography and numerous documents, preserved in various archives, help to better understand his role in the development of natural sciences.

    Three letters of Johann Ludwig Gravenhorst to Alexandre Brongniart, dated 1812-1822, are preserved in collections of MNHN, Paris. This article analyses that correspondence from the point of view of the history of paleontology and geology. The letters are particularly interesting as material casting new light on both the origin of naturalist collections of the University ofWrocław and history of paleontological studies in Silesia. They are also important for history of natural sciences in the first half of the 19th century. They provide important details concerning exchange of specimens between Wrocław University and MNHN (especially exchange of imprints of plant fossils from coal mines near the city of Wałbrzych for geological collections from various parts of France). In these letters Gravenhorst presented also his ideas on systematics of invertebrates (taxonomic position of trilobites and "animal versus vegetal" character of corals) and made comments on publications of Brongniart, Cuvier and Desmarest sent from Paris. He was also asking his French colleague about credibility of claims concerning existence of human ancestors.

    The paper presents Graffenauer’s, Alsatian physician and naturalist, stay in Poland as a Napoleonic officer. The authors present the context of Natural History work during the Napoleonic Wars and the biography of this scientist. His writings are analyzed in terms of history of geology. Letters of Graffenauer constitute a precious document for the history of science. The authors emphasize the importance of information about amber, the biography of George Forster, the history of Natural History collection of Gdansk They also highlight the importance of the testimony of the Napoleonic era in the history of Natural Sciences in Poland.

    An 18th-century drawing has been found in the Institut de France in Paris. This is a valuable iconographic source for both the town of Wieliczka and the mine, originating from the 1860s. Particularly important are the views of buildings and mining objects whose iconographic records are scanty (Church of St. Clement; Church of St. Spirit; Regis, Wodna Góra, Leszno and Dani³owicz pitheads; underground Chapel of St. Anthony) or their appearances were previously unknown (underground Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk), as well as the imagery of techniques of mining, transportation, mine dewatering and mine working protection.
