Opis:
Doors are a very important architectonic detail, both to the elevation of a building and to the furnishing of interiors. Decoration and use of color had a great influence on their artistic expression. A few examples of gothic woodwork on doors have survived to the present day in Gdańsk, mainly in sacred sites. They represent several types of construction and decoration. For the most part, they are doors built of planks (in the church of the Holy Trinity, the church of St. John and St. Mary’s) or planks with frontal wood strips (in the church of St. Nicholas), nested in wooden, rhombus-shaped grates, filled with four-leaf elements. This type of construction was very popular in the 15th century and at the beginning of the 16th century in northern Poland. The remaining doors have a redoubled plank construction (in the Prison Tower of the Długa Street Antegate Compound), redoubled planks with rectangular grating (in the church of St. Katherine) and framepanels (the doors in the chapel closures at the church of the Holy Virgin Mary). The most decorative are the doors which are now found at the National Museum in Gdańsk, which have a plank construction set with rectangular grates with bas-relief decorations. All of the doors are made of oak and have iron fittings. The ways that color is used on the doors in Gdańsk repeat themselves. Two-toned works are the most common: red and olive or malachite green. The nested grates with four-leaf elements exhibited these colors in two ways: green on the frame, grate and leaves, and red on the background behind the leaves and rosette nail heads. The second variant was green on the frame, four-leaf elements and background, and red on the grate and nail heads. The doors from the church of St. John were done slightly differently, but since the painting was completed later one, they cannot be regarded as typically gothic.
