horizontal and vertical “individualism – collectivism”

Opis:
The presented study compares a link between two constructs: “individualism – collectivism” and values. The first construct takes into consideration horizontal and vertical orientation (equality and hierarchy respectively) (Triandis). The description of the second construct accounts for nineteen types of values located on two bipolar dimensions: “conservatism – openness to change” and “self-transcendence – self-enhancement” (Schwartz). The question about the relation between types of values and described horizontal and vertical orientations of individualism and collectivism is posed. The sample consists of 368 students. The results show that the differentiation of mentality on the “individualism – collectivism” dimension with its horizontal and vertical orientation is linked to the differentiation of types of values on the “conservatism – openness to change”. After accounting for horizontal “individualism – collectivism” and vertical “individualism – collectivism” and their relation to the second dimension of type of values (self-transcendence – self- enhancement) the results are not consistent.

Opis:
The main aim of the research is a diagnosis of attitudes to religion and religious institutions (their role in the public sphere of social functioning, and establishing high principles) and value system. Surveys were conducted in 2003 (a sample of 325 students), in 2008 (a sample of 379 students), and 2013 (a sample of 368 students). It was assumed that there are differences between this three groups in acceptance of attitudes and that attitudes depend on a value system. The theoretical ground was based upon Rokeach’s concept, and The Value Survey of this author was used. A designated tool was constructed to measure attitudes. The results of research allow to state that approximately a half of the students expose significance of religion and religious institutions in public life, and identify religion as an important source of high principles. The attitudes were accepted by a smaller percentage of respondents in the third wave in comparison to the first and the second wave. Moreover, the attitudes were connected with a particular pattern of a value system that indicates differentiation of individualism – collectivism dimension.

Opis:
The research examines the attitudes to national culture and traditions, and a system of values. Analyses were conducted in 2003 (a sample of 325 students), and in 2008 (a sample of 379 students), and in 2013 (a sample of 368 students). It was assumed that (1) there are differences between three groups in acceptance of attitudes and (2) that attitudes to national culture and tradition depend on the value system. The Rokeach’s concept provides the theoretical background. The results of research allow stating that most students underline the significance of national heritages. The lowest acceptance of national heritage was observed in 2008. Moreover, attitudes depend on the value system: a positive attitude to culture and traditions of the own nation is connected with the higher preference of collective values, whereas the acceptance of cultural integration with the western countries is linked with individual values.
