Opis:
Chemistry - radiochemistry, radiation chemistry and nuclear chemical engineering play a very important role in the nuclear power development. Even at present, the offered technology is well developed, but still several improvements are needed and proposed. These developments concern all stages of the technology; front end, reactor operation (coolant chemistry and installation components decontamination, noble gas release control), back end of fuel cycle, etc. Chemistry for a partitioning and a transmutation is a new challenge for the chemists and chemical engineers. The IVth generation of nuclear reactors cannot be developed without chemical solutions for fuel fabrication, radiation-coolants interaction phenomena understanding and spent fuel/waste treatment technologies elaboration. Radiochemical analytical methods are fundamental for radioecological monitoring of radioisotopes of natural and anthropological origin. This paper addresses just a few subjects and is not a detailed overview of the field, however it illustrates a role of chemistry for a safe and economical nuclear power development.

Opis:
Exhaust gases with high SO2 concentrations are emitted from combustion of high sulphur fossil fuels and from different industrial processes (e.g. copper smelter and sintering plants). The application of the electron beam process for SO2 and NOx removal from such flue gases was investigated. A parametric study was carried out to determine the SO2 and NOx removal efficiency as a function of temperature and humidity of irradiated gases, absorbed dose and ammonia stoichiometry. The efficiency 90–95% of SO2 removal was obtained in the optimal treatment conditions with an inlet SO2 concentration of up to 15% vol. The synergistic effect of high SO2 content on NOx removal was indicated. The collected by-product was a mixture of ammonium sulphate and nitrate. The content of heavy metals in the by- -products was many times lower than the values accepted for commercial fertilizers.

The objective of this work was to compare the bioleaching with the acid leaching of uranium under similar process conditions within 65 days. The low-grade uranium ore used in the experiments was collected from Radoniow’s ‘small’ dump, Poland. Bioleaching and acid leaching studies were carried out in identical columns. The isolated bacterial consortium from the Radoniow’s mine was used for the bioleaching process. A solution of sulphuric acid and H2O2 as oxidizing agent was used for the acid leaching. The extraction of uranium under acid leaching conditions reached maximum of 64±13 % w/w after 31 days. The bioleaching of uranium achieved a maximum extraction of 75±15 % w/w after 55 days. In this study an attempt was made to demonstrate the relationship between the shrinking-core model and the experimental data by plotting the fractional conversion of uranium against time.

Theoretical study of NOx removal from humid air by a hybrid system (catalyst combined with electron beam) was carried out. The purpose of this work is to study the possibility to decrease energy consumption for NOx removal. The kinetics of radiation catalytic oxidation of NO on the catalyst TiO2 surface under electron beam irradiation was elaborated. Program Scilab 5.3.0 was used for numerical simulations. Influential parameters such as inlet NO concentration, dose, gas flow rate, water concentration and catalyst contents that can affect NOx removal efficiency were studied. The results of calculation show that the removal effiiency of NOx might be increased by 8–16% with the presence of a catalyst in the gas irradiated field.

Opis:
The model gases of toluene-air mixtures were prepared by blowing technical air into liquid toluene and then irradiated with an ILU-6 accelerator located at the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology (INCT), Poland. It was found that the decomposition efficiency of toluene increases with absorbed dose and decreases with initial concentration of toluene. At 14.5 kGy dose, the decomposition efficiencies of toluene were 50, 37 and 34.5% for the initial concentrations of toluene 32.0, 63.4 and 78.0 ppm, respectively. At 58.0 kGy dose, the decomposition efficiencies of toluene were 93.8 and 78.1%, the initial concentrations of toluene being 32.0 and 63.4 ppm, respectively. Benzaldehyde was identified as one of the by-products of toluene decomposition in an air mixture. The decomposition efficiency and by-product formation under EB irradiation were compared between toluene and 4-chlorotoluene.

The possibility of application of naturally existing differences in isotope contents 18O/16O, 2H/1H in waters for investigation of transport and mixing of various waters in the tributary-river system is presented. Experiments carried out on the Bug-Narew rivers-Zegrze Lake and the BugoNarew-Vistula rivers systems have indicated that the hydrogen isotope ratio 2H/1H can be used as an intrinsic tracer of natural mixing processes occurring in rivers. The IRMS methodology was used for isotope ratio measurement of water samples. The degrees of water mixing as a function of distance from the confluence point of rivers were determined. The obtained results indicate that in water systems where the natural differences in ?2H are higher than 5‰ this technique can replace the time-consuming and expensive dye (or radiotracer) dispersion tests for evaluation of pollutant transport in rivers.

Experimental data related to C2HCl3 (TCE) removal in dry and humid (200-1000 ppm of H2O) air, respectively, in ambient conditions under electron beam irradiation in the dose range of 1-40 kGy has been published in the literature. Based on the experimental results a theoretical model of C2HCl3 decomposition was proposed for the kinetic mechanism of such process. The active radicals of Cl, O and OH play an important role in the decomposition of TCE. According to the calculations performed, the Cl- dissociative electron attachment predominates in the initial stage of C2HCl3 decomposition. Cl radical accelerates this degradation by chain process in both humid and dry air, respectively. The OH radical produced in humid air also enhances the decomposition process of TCE.

Jednym z podstawowych parametrów wpływających na wydajność procesu fermentacji metanowej jest intensywność i struktura mieszania zawiesiny w fermentorze. Z wykorzystaniem metod obliczeniowej mechaniki płynów wyznaczono strukturę przepływu i mieszania wymuszonego systemem zatopionych strug w prostopadłościennym fermentorze o objętości cieczy około 470 m3. Określono parametry i zasięg mieszania wzdłuż osi fermen-tora oraz mieszania pionowego wywoływanego systemem pomp cyrkulapych. Określono optymalną lokalizację napływu strug oraz ich natężenia !epływu.
The intensity and structure of biomass mixing in fermentor are the one of principal parameters which determine the yield of biogas production practises. Using the Computational Fluid Dynamics method the structure of flow and suspension mixing in rectangular fermentor with liquid phase volume 470 m3 were determined. The suspension motion inside the fermentor was extorted by system of jets. The range of jets located in the axe of fermentator in bottom zone and jets caused by system of pumps which transport vertically the suspension from bottom up to liquid surface was established. The optimal flow rates values and localization of jets inputs were determined.

Opis:
Scientific objective of this work was elaboration of radiometric method for the development of hydrometallurgical process for recovery of Cu from the copper ore. A neutron activation analysis (NAA) was identified as a very convenient tool for the process investigation. The samples of copper ore were activated in a nuclear reactor. The parameters of the neutron activation were calculated. Radioisotope 64Cu was selected as an optimal tracer, and it was used for the investigation of the leaching process. During the experiments, various processes applying leaching media such as sulphuric acid, nitric acid, and organic acids were investigated. The recovery of the metals using sulphuric acid was insufficient, around 10%. Investigated organic media also did not meet expectations. The best results were obtained in experiments with nitric acid. Up to 90% of Cu and other metals were extracted from the copper ore. Copper concentration calculations obtained by NAA were confimed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) technique. Both techniques gave comparable results, but the advantage of the NAA is a possibility for easy online measurements without shutting down or disturbing the system.

Opis:
The use of radiotracers in the present study is intended to replace traditional steps of metal quantitative analysis (solution sampling and instrumental chemical analysis) and to allow real-time measurements of metal concentrations during the leaching process. In this study, 64Cu, an isotope of copper, was selected as a radiotracer. Samples of copper flotation tailings were irradiated in the Maria research reactor (Świerk, Poland) and mixed with an inactive portion of the milled flotation waste. The leaching process was carried out in a glass reactor, and the radiation spectrum was measured using a gamma spectrometer. The material was then treated using various acids (sulphuric acid, nitric acid, acetic acid, citric acid, and ascorbic acid) in a wide range of their concentrations. Experiments with the radiotracer were conducted in sulphuric and nitric acids. The amount of the leached metal (copper) was calculated on the basis of the peak area ratio in the gamma-ray spectrum of the activated tailings and standard samples. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was also used to analyse the metal content. Maximum recovery of 56% Cu was achieved using 9 M HNO3, whereas the recovery was lowest for ascorbic acid (1%). Both analytical methods were compared, and the results presented in this paper are in good agreement with radiometric measurements obtained using ICP-MS analysis.
