Opis:
In this paper, the problems of diagnostics of main propulsion marine engines are presented. Diesel or turbine engines are used for main propulsion of vessel power plants. Marine engine is a complex technical object. For the purpose of diagnostics it is convenient to divide the engine into several units - subsystems such as: piston -crank assembly; working medium exchange system, fuel supply system, lubricating system, cooling system, starting up -reversing system; combustion chamber. The organization of the marine engine diagnostic process can usually come down to two stages, general diagnostics and damage location. Most popular in marine engine diagnostics have been the periodic run analyzers, called pressure analyzers, electronic indicators or MIP (Mean Indicated Pressure) calculators. Marine turbine engine operation requires professional technical supervision. The basic diagnostic system of marine turbine engine is able to assess the current engine condition and give forecast concerning its future operation in a complex way with the use of computer technology. Working out operating decision was based on proper preparation of operational parameters which were processed in a computer according to defined algorithms. Diesel engine diagnostic systems of merchant vessel engines are discussed. Finally, description of diagnostic methods implemented in turbine and piston engines in Polish Navy ships are introduced.

Frequent crew rotation, a shorthand, and various levels of technical crew skills, are the facts with the ship-owners has to cope very often. Having the proper level of engine exploitation as a main objective is necessary to implement a constant engine monitoring system, in order to obtain quick and reliable diagnostic information. One cannot omit the financial aspect of monitoring system implementation, created by its price and costs of service. In this paper, the analysis of diagnostic utility of the signal deriving from a propulsion shaft fluctuation during its one revolution is presented. The angular speed of the shaft was measured using a laser sensor of torque meter ETNP-10. Diagnostic utility validation has been verified on a basis of combustion quality, in cylinders of two-stroke, turbocharged Marine Diesel Engine. Test was carried out on board of a container vessel during its sea passage. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the method, the crew simulated engine’s malfunction by fuel injection cut-off in various cylinders (only one in the same time). The interference signals decomposition was carried out using the method of synchronous averaging and moving approximation with polynomial of 3rd exponent.

Opis:
Vibration tests of marine gas turbine engines are performed as researches on-line and off-line types. The paper presents analyses of both methods. Results of tests were received on three types of gas turbine engines operated in the COGAG type propulsion systems. The application of periodical diagnostic procedures or on-line monitoring systems makes it possible to operate ship propulsion systems in accordance with their current technical state. In the case of ship gas turbines the hourly period of scheduled maintenance or repair surveys is presently the criterion for maintenance time determination. The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used for confirmation actual technical state. FEA are used successfully for a wide range of problems and it may also be used for the modelling and analysis of rotor system. Presently, the diagnostics team uses FEA and the modelling of rotordynamics in conjunction with vibration analysis for detection and identification of unbalancing. Main goal of researches was qualified of helpfulness and unequivocally results received by methods of synchronous measurement, order tracking and auto tracking. All vibration symptoms were chosen from the methodology of the diagnosing gas turbine engines operated in the Polish Navy, called BDS (Base Diagnosing System). This element of BDS is accepted and used in all ships of Polish Navy, which are powered by the COGAG power plant. Second purpose of researches was estimation of the possibility of implementation presented methods of vibration analyses of gas turbine engines fornew, modern on-line monitoring system. The proposed diagnostics method makes it possible to determine the limiting value of vibration symptoms witch, if exceeded, indicates the inadmissible axis slope value between rotated machines of gas turbine engine and, more-over, it provides an unambiguous relationship between the value of symptom of rotors unbalance and the rotors rotational speed.

The paper presents results of the calculation, based on simplified engine model, aimed on prediction of IAS (Instantaneous Angular Speed) of the crankshaft fluctuations under faulty engine condition. Gas forces were calculated basing on results of in-cylinder pressure measurements which were used as inputs to the dynamic model. Mass forces were calculated basing on technical particulars of the engine Sulzer 3Al 25/30.Measurements of the incylinder pressure was carried out at laboratory stand in Gdynia Maritime University, equipped with diesel engine Sulzer 3AL 25/30 driving electro-generator. Sulzer 3AL 25/30 is three cylinder, medium speed, four stroke marine diesel engine, with maximum output 408 kW at 750 rpm. In order to evaluate of IAS model utility for diagnostic prediction of the engine behavior, two kinds of malfunctions of engine’s fuel system were simulated. First malfunction was fuel leakage from high pressure line; the second was partly plugged injector’s nozzle. Construction of high pressure fuel pump enable to fuel leakage simulation. The engine was run out at load 250 kW what is around 65% of nominal. Results of all measurement were smoothed in order to eliminate a noise using SG (Savitzky – Golay) filter. Results of fault condition modeling were compared with healthy engine model and with results of in -cylinder pressure diagrams, in order to create a map of deviations from normal condition.

The paper presents results of the experiment focused on evaluation of records of runs of the engine in good condition as a reference for subsequent detection of faults of fuel system of medium speed diesel engine. The aim of research was determination of limits of instantaneous angular speed's spread spotted between random starts of the engine, without any fault condition simulation. Due to fine variation of the load setup and different ambient condition, every record of angular speed of independent starting, despite of attempts to sustain the same load and rotational speed value, presents some deviations between runs. Having on mind utilization of such measurement as a template for further comparison, is crucial to find out how random changes of ambient conditions and accuracy of revolutionary speed setup affect the IAS magnitude course. The answer was got in way of registration of numerous runs of the test engine after independent starts and hand adjustment of required RPM’s. It is assumed that elements of Exhaust Gases Cleaning Systems creates additional resistance along fumes duct and can affect energetic process of combustion. In the paper are presented results of researches aimed on detection and recognition of dumping effect in the exhaust pipeline using devices dedicated for engine’s torque and angular speed measurement. The experiment was carried out in test stand of Gdynia Maritime University; equipped with one-cylinder, low speed engine working in two-stroke mode. Effect of increasing of gas flow resistance was achieved by installation of shutters in cross-section of exhaust pipe. The shutters diminished active flow „window“ for 50% of normal crossection area of the exhaust pipe The plan of measurements encompasses registration of Instantaneous Angular Speed of the engine’s shaft and parallel registration of Instantaneous Value of Shaft Torsion, what reflect fluctuation of torque. Value of angular speed and toque enables exact calculation of power produced by the engine. Experiment included measurements at different levels of engine’s load and with changes of mean rotational speed. Angular speed and shaft’s torsion were measured and recorded using system ETNP-10 which is based on optical sensor and set of toothed discs. That method gives high accuracy of angular speed and torsion measurement. Results of experiment are presented as difference of related curves of values’ variations of angular speed and torsion occurring at the propulsion shaft connecting the engine and the water brake.

In the paper has been presented the analysis of diagnostic utility of signals, deriving from torque (measured value is an instantaneous shaft's torsion angle, torque value is subsequently calculated basing on shaft's steel Kirhoff's modulus or Young's modulus values) and angular acceleration of the propulsion shaft. All measurements has been carried out using photo optic torque meter ETNP-10, which was installed at the propulsion shaft run by two-stroke low speed marine diesel engine. In order to distinguish diagnostic signals, measurements of healthy engine run and subsequently simulations of a failure by one cylinder cut-off (suspending of a fuel pump) were done. Analysis of torque, revolutionary speed, angular acceleration were and subsequently, in order to distinguish spectral attributes of above functions, fast Fourier transform of speed waveforms were carried out. Diagrams presented in the paper shows comparison of mentioned above signals' waveforms. The most significant influence of simulated combustion process deviation at a signal's variation was noticed when rotational speed and angular acceleration of the shaft were considered. Acquired results of research and measurements are to be a subject of further analysis in order to define representative symptoms and diagnostic values corresponding to propulsion system and engine failures.

The paper presents some problems of carrying out measurements of energetic characteristics and vessel’s performance in the conditions of sea examinations. As the object of propulsion characteristic determination was selected the ship with fixed pitch propeller. In order to formulate models of power characteristics, in first, known physical aspect were taken and subsequently statistic theory was implemented. Models of propulsion performance were built basing on two theoretical methods of determination of required shaft power and torque at a hub, as the function of propeller’s revolutionary speed and sailing condition represented by dimensionless coefficients. Model number one, based on Silukov method presents function with variable power index, of shaft power in domain of revolutionary speed. The second one presents model of torque variations, based on Silovic – Fancev method. For verification of models were taken presented in available bibliography, results of researches of ship’s propulsion systems [6]. We also discuss the manner of reducing the results of measurements to the standard conditions. We present the way of preparing propulsion characteristics and the analysis of examination uncertainty for the measurement of torque. Statistical analysis of deviation of results, using three models, proposed in the paper. As a result of analysis, one point from primary data set was rejected due to its unreliability, what was resulting with higher adequacy of characteristics.
