Opis:
The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of colloidal silver on postharvest longevity and quality of Aspidistra elatior leaves. Colloidal silver was applied at three concentrations: 0.01%, 0.02% and 0.04%. Control leaves were placed in water. Treating aspidistra leaves with colloidal silver solutions increased greenness index of the laminas, thereby improving their aesthetic value. Aspidistra leaves exposed to colloidal silver at 0.01% and 0.02% increased their fresh weight.

Nanotechnology, as one of the most promising fields of science, brings unlimited possibilities of development of many areas, including agriculture and horticulture. Nano-silver is one of the nanomaterials that its effect on plants are under investigation nowadays. Numerous experiments conducted by scientists evaluated the possibility of using nano-silver as an potential plant growth regulator for crops, and also as a means to extend the post-harvest longevity of cut flowers and ornamental foliage. This paper summarizes a comprehensive and systematic study of the data on nano-silver activity and its application in horticulture, postharvest handling and storage of cut flowers and florist greens.

Opis:
Tulips is one of the most important cut flowers in the world. For the first time, the efficacy of nano silver (NS) in extending the vase life of cut tulip ‘White Parrot’ was evaluated. Cut flowers were kept in solutions containing 0, 10, 20 and 40 mg L-1 NS. The NS treatments at all concentrations extended the vase life of cut flowers. The 10 mg L-1 NS treatment produced the longest vase life, as compared to the control. On the last day of decorative value, the greater fresh weight was observed in the flowers exposed to the solution of NS in 10 or 20 mg L-1. NS at 20 or 40 mg L-1 prevents the leaves from yellowing.

This research investigated the effect of different concentrations of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a donor of nitric oxide) on the longevity of cut giant chincherinchee (Ornithogalum saundersiae) inflorescences. Postharvest quality of inflorescences was positively affected by SNP treatment. Application of SNP enhanced the vase-life, final fresh weight and diameter of inflorescences. The best quality inflorescences were obtained when the stems held in 100 µmol SNP. These are the first published results that indicate that nitric oxide positively improved the longevity and quality of cut O. saundersiae inflorescences.

Opis:
The wide demand for natural biostimulants encourages the search for new, alternative sources of substances with high biological activity. Chitosan can promote plant growth and root system development, enhance photosynthetic activity, increase nutrient and metabolite content. Eucomis bicolor, commonly known as the ‘pineapple lily’, is not widely known in terms of cultivation and biological activity. The aim of the experiment was to determine the effect of chitosan on growth of Eucomis bicolor. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to describe the effect of chitosan on morphological features of Eucomis bicolor. The results showed that soaking Eucomis bicolor bulbs in a chitosan solution before planting has stimulated the growth, flowering and yield of bulbs. Treating the plants with chitosan at 50 mg/L had the most beneficial effect on the number of leaves per plant, the relative chlorophyll content in the leaves as well as the number of bulbs per plant. Chitosan has a multi-directional, positive effect on plant growth and can be used as a potential biostimulant.

In this study, the efficacy of colloidal silver in extending the vase life of cut chrysanthemum ‘Feeling Green’ inflorescences was evaluated. Three concentrations of colloidal silver were used: 0.01%, 0.02 % and 0.04%. Control inflorescences were kept in water. Colloidal silver treatments at all concentrations extended the vase life of cut chrysanthemum. The 0.02% colloidal silver treatment produced the longest vase life (25 days), while the control resulted in the shortest vase life (18 days). In addition, the less weight loss were observed in the inflorescences exposed to the solution of colloidal silver. The greatest solution uptake was observed in the variant with colloidal silver at 0.02%. Leaf greenness index was the highest in the chrysanthemums placed in 0.04% silver solution.

Opis:
The available range of cut flowers is constantly supplemented with new species and cultivars, and thus recommendations for their vase life are required. Eucomis 'Sparkling Burgundy' is an ornamental bulbous plant with huge potential on the cut flower market. This research investigated the effect of different concentrations of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a donor of NO) on postharvest quality of cut Eucomis 'Sparkling Burgundy'. Plants grown in the two different production locations (field, plastic tunnel). Cut stems were kept in solution containing 0.1 µmol, 100 µmol and 1mmol SNP. The average vase life of Eucomis 'Sparkling Burgundy' flowers over all treatments was 44.5 days. Flowers held in 100 µmol SNP had longer vase live, greater fresh weight and solution uptake than the control. Flowers harvested from the plastic tunnel had increased fresh weight, stem length and solution uptake than those from the field.

Opis:
Salinity occurring in intensively used agricultural, industrialized, and urbanized areas is one of the main factors in soil degradation. The effect of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on plant growth under environmental stresses is still not fully understood. Two experiments were conducted on the response of Asiatic lilies to treatment with colloidal AgNPs. In Experiment I, the study aimed to evaluate the effect of treating 'Osasco' lily bulbs with colloidal AgNPs (0, 25, 50, 100, and 150 ppm) on growth, flowering, and bulb yield, as well as the production of bulblets. Compared with the control, the applied colloidal AgNPs at all concentrations caused an acceleration of flowering and an increase in bulb diameter and the fresh weight of the aboveground part of the plants and bulbs. In addition, treatment with colloidal AgNPs at concentrations of 100 and 150 ppm increased bulblets’ number and fresh weight. In Experiment II, the effects of colloidal AgNPs (100 ppm) and NaCl stress (600 mM) on the growth parameters, assimilation pigment content, and chemical composition of 'Bright Pixi' lily leaves were evaluated. As a result of the application of colloidal AgNPs, plants flowered faster and had increased height, petal width, fresh bulb weight, bulb diameter, and several scales in the bulb. Under NaCl stress, plants had reduced fresh weight of the aboveground part and bulb, bulb diameter, number of scales in a bulb, and contents of assimilation pigments, N, K, Ca, Cu, Mn and Zn. Colloidal AgNPs offset the adverse effects of salinity on bulb yield by increasing fresh bulb, bulb diameter, and the number of scales in lily bulbs. In conclusion, using colloidal AgNPs can contribute to developing new methods of bulbous plants production and an effective strategy to protect plants from ever-increasing land salinization.

Opis:
Nowadays, the use of natural polysaccharides in the field of agriculture has increased in order to achieve sufficient yields and quality. Minimal research on effect of biopolymers on growth ornamental plants has been published. Verbena bonariensis L. is a valuable perennial species, recommended for cultivation in gardens and green areas, as well as cut and pot plant. The main objective of the investigation was to analyzed the effects of three polysaccharides on the growth and flowering of V. bonariensis. The plants were sprayed with aqueous solution of chitosan, gellan gum or kappa-carrageenan at a concentration of 0.2%, five times. Control plants were treated with water. The results indicated that polysaccharides significantly enhanced the plant height, number of inflorescences and number of leaves of V. bonariensis plants. Application of chitosan and gellan gum significantly increased the stomatal conductance by 13.8 and 16.3 % and enhanced the number of shoots per plant by 29.4 and 37.5 % compared with that control, respectively. Among the three polysaccharides, gellan gum proved best and gave significantly maximum fresh weight of aboveground part and fresh weight of root by 34.3 and 114 % over the control one.
