- The main aim of this work was to investigate the change s that have occurred in the social and economic environment of apple production in Poland over the last 59 years. This long period includes 40 years of planned economy and 19 years of market economy. The analyzed time frame, over 50 years long, was divided in three characteristic periods, according to the growth rate and implementation of technological progress in apple production, viz. the periods of: extensive growth (1950 - 1965), intensive growth (1966 - 1989), and market economy (1990 - 2008). The technologi cal changes in production and their intensity were the main reasons for such a division. The main source of data for this study were publications by GUS (Polish Central Statistical Office) and IERiG Ż (Institute of Agricultural and Food Economics). A poin t is made that the great expansion in apple production in Poland has been possible only due to technical and technological improvements in fruit production (during the last 50 years). It is the technological progress that explains the changes in the total number of apple trees in Poland, in the size of the area planted with apple trees, in the number of cultivated apple varieties, and in apple yields.
