Christian Friedrich von Wrede
Ludwig Wilhelm von Regler - Opis:
- Sacred buildings are one of the basic elements forming the cultural landscape of the rural areas in Lower Silesia. Until 1740, these were primarily Catholic churches; and the situation changed when this area was seized by Prussian king Frederick II. Protestant houses of worship (wattle and daub structures) began appearing even in villages. Almost 200 of them were erected by 1752. The teams of cartographers led by Christian Friedrich von Wrede and Ludwig Wilhelm von Regler were witnesses to the changing landscape, especially the emergence of new spatial dominants of the villages. In 1746 and 1763, the Prussian monarch, placing great trust in them, ordered them to do the survey of Silesia on put on maps even minute details of the landscape. The hand-written maps made by them were kept secret until 1901. That year the maps were presented for the first time in Wrocław during the 13th Days of German Geographers. Since then the researchers of the history of Silesia have been allowed to use them. Various techniques were applied to examine the maps, including the modern computer software from the hGIS family, which allowed us to assess the maps in terms of their accuracy. The maps, which seem to have been underestimated for a long time in works and research of historians, reveal new details on the sacrum buildingsexisting in the second half of the 18th century in the northern frontiers of Lower Silesia. They frequently contain pioneering information, unseen in other sources before, e.g. written ones. Even if explorers knew about the existence of some structures or buildings, they were often not able to pinpoint the exact location of these constructions. The maps fill this gap, offering a new direction for ongoing research. It can be said without doubt that the maps made by von Wrede and von Regler are the basic sources for reconstructing the network of sacred buildings located in Northern Silesia in the mid-18th century.
