Opis:
The author in this short essay introduces to the academic and scientific community an unpublished poem of Peter Arivabene, a learned poet who lived in the second half of the fifteenth century. The codex, which contains the poem is kept in the Library of Palazzo Piccolomini in Pienza, where Prof. Orazio Antonio Bologna saw it for the first time on October 12th, 2012. Becoming acquainted with the contents of the codex and believing to give a valuable contribution to the knowledge of the poet, he transcribed, translated and published the contents of the codex. In this study, for the first time, Giovanni Pietro Arrivabene is mentioned as a poet, because Humanism and Renaissance’s scholars already knew him but only as the secretary of Cardinal Francesco Gonzaga and as the abbreviator and secretary in the Vatican curia from 1482, where he remained until 1491 under the popes’ service. The long poem, begun around 1459 when the poet was about 20 years old, was completed after the diet of Mantua, which ended on January 19th, 1460. The fine poem reveals a deep and refined culture even though there are uncertainties and redundancies peculiar to youth.

Opis:
The brief, but interesting, work by Apuleius constitutes a fixed point both to delineate the biography of the famous African rhetorician, a native of Madaura, and to trace a picture with quite defined outlines on the social and cultural, economic and political aspect, in which he was paying the Roman Empire in the second century aD, especially in that rich southern Mediterranean area. In this short essay the close relationship between culture and magic is highlighted. In culturally backward populations, the educated person is often referred to as a magician, a name which, with its semantic nuances, continues today, especially in some villages of southern Italy. So magician, both in the singular and in the plural, means both the educated person and those who are able to spell or predict the future.

Opis:
Auctor, innumeris inquisitionibus perfectis, duo tantum Ioannis Petri Arriuabeni inuenit carmina, quorum alteri In Pii summi Pontificis Laudem, Gonzagis titulus est alteri.
With this brief study, first the author deals with the poetry by Giovanni Pietro Arrivabene. In fact, for the first time he has published a long Latin poem of the poet preserved in a single manuscript in Pienza, in the library, which was of Pio II. The poet, who lived during the Renaissance, had a very careful preparation at the school of Francesco Filelfo, the most appreciated humanist after Enea Silvio Piccolomini. With the Carmen in Pii Pontificis laudem… Arrivabene hoped to enter in the courtyard of the Pope; but Pius II, even though he appreciated the poem, written on fine parchment, didn’t take the young poet into account, who was only twenty years. The scholar, on the one hand, thought back to the formation and the aspirations of the young poet, on the other the cultural character of his age, in which Giovanni Pietro Arrivabene spent his life. Short, but useful hints are devoted to the wonderful court of Mantua, where the poet spent twenty years at the service of the cardinal Francesco Gonzaga.

Opis:
In this short work we mention the different roles played by the priest and by the king in the religious and political fields. At the time of Homer these two figures were distinct, but, not infrequently, were in violent opposition, as we read in the first canto of Iliad. In ancient times, however, the religious duties, along with political ones, were concentrated in the hand of one man, as we deduce from passages of Homeric poems, from hints to the places of Hesiod and from vestige of the ancient East world. In the course of time, however, the King is interested, exclusively, in politics and the priest in religion, so that, with the passing time, they become two separate entities, each in its specific role. But often the priest, strong of his influence on the masses and on the same king, centralizing the powers in his person, passes his limits, and to reach one’s aims, invokes the curse and the revenge of the gods on his antagonist, until to humiliate him in front of his subjects.
