Opis:
Paper discusses the influence of site quality on self−thinning process in silver birch stands growing on abandoned farmlands in Mazowieckie region (central Poland). Number of trees in a stand decreases with increasing age. The better the site (the higher site index value), the higher number of trees can be observed. However at the age of 10 difference between sites of various quality (site index) become insignificant. There is no need to include site index into the self−thinning models for young silver birch stands.

Opis:
Where train tracks bisect moose habitat, trains may collide with moose, impacting the local population and creating a safety concern for rail traffic. Understanding the patterns underlying these collisions, is critical for helping managers choose the right mitigation methods to reduce mortality on railways. Our objective was to analyze the long−term temporal patterns of moose−train collisions. We used data on moose−train collisions from British Columbia (Canada) obtained from Canadian National Railways and British Columbia Rail Corporation. We analysed data from collision events that occurred between 1990 and 2010, excluding 1995−1996 for which there were no data. A total number of days, when moose−train collisions occurred (LD), and a total number of moose killed from collisions (LK) were calculated in annual, seasonal and monthly resolutions. We also investigated distribution of these data for day of the week. We used chi2 and Mann−Kendall tests to investigate whether LD or LK changed over time and Pearson correlation coefficient to relate these trends to the annual moose harvest in the analysed period. The number of days in which moose−train collisions occurred varied by year and by time of year. LD occurred most often in winter and least often in summer, with the highest number being recorded in February and the lowest in July. There were no significant differences in the number of moose−train collisions on various days of the week. We found no significant trends in LD for seasons, months (except for November) and weekdays for the period under investigation. In general, LK revealed a temporal pattern as LD, however number of killed moose was significantly lower on Fridays and Saturdays comparing to other week days. Because moose−train collision patterns did not change significantly between years, we assume that the temporal patterns exhibited in our study likely hold true from year to year and can be used to inform managers considering mitigation measures aimed at reducing moose−train collisions.

The paper presents empirical equations elaborated to determine dry biomass of Scots pine trees and their parts. Basing on the relationships between dry biomass of different tree parts and tree characteristics, various forms of commonly used non−linear biomass equations were examined. To assure additive character of biomass equations, seemingly unrelated regression was used for the final model fitting.

Opis:
One of the main tasks for the forest managers is to form the highly productive stands, and it is mainly performed by applying intermediate cuttings during the stand development. As the impact of thinning on the premature Scots pine, commercially most important species in Lithuania, has not been sufficiently investigated yet, our objective was to evaluate the impact of such treatments on the growth and yield of the pine stands by using data from the long term experimental plots. The described thinning experiment was established in 1983 in Kazlu˛ Ru−da (54.760395°N, 23.517736°E), in the 30−years−old Scots pine forest, growing in oligotrophic site conditions. Four square plots with the size of 0.25 ha each were set. The first one (5) was left as a control variant with no thinning, while the others were subjected to the treatments of different intensity. In variant 5A (slightly thinned) 15% of the basal area compared to the control plot was removed. Accordingly, in variant 5B (moderate thinning) 25% and in variant 5C (heavy thinning) 40% of basal area was subtracted. No additional thinning was implemented further during the experiment. Plots were re−measured at least 4 times with the last measurement in 2016, when the stand was 63 years old. The main result of this study was that after the 33 years no evident effect of various intensity of silvicultural treatments can be seen as the growth and yield of the un−thinned forest stand was the highest compared to the thinned ones. Growth and yield in the most intensely thinned stand reached 86 and 85% compared to the control variant, respectively. The best productive results were found for moderate thinning (92 and 89% of growth and yield of the un−thinned stand), while the worst – in the slightly thinned 5A variant (77 and 83% of values for the control stand). Further on, the number of trees and competition level in all plots were very different when the experiment was established. Yet after 33 years, these differences were remarkably reduced. Accordingly, the diameter distributions, being very different at the beginning of the experiment, eventually became very similar in all experimental plots. Finally, the results showed that in un− −thinned forest stand, natural mortality (self−thinning) of trees adjusted its density just in time. Thus this stand managed to keep its growing energy in later periods, avoiding degradation or destruction predicted by some theories.

Opis:
The paper presents the tables for indirect determination of the age of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) trees basing on easy to measure dendrometric parameters. We elaborated empirical formulae that enable determination of tree age using total tree height, breast height diameter and stump diameter as the predictors. Data was collected in 40 pure silver birch stands growing on former farmlands in Mazowsze region (central Poland). Sample material consisted of data from the stem analyses of 200 trees and measurements of 600 stumps. Obtained equations explain 70−86% of the age variability. The best fit was achieved for joint use of total tree height and breast height diameter as the independent variables.
