Great Sejm
the nobility from Lublin
the nobleman’s Commonwealth (18th c.)
Opis:
The period of the reign of the last Polish king Stanisław August Poniatowski was when the thought of the necessity of radical changes grew in the minds of the nobility. The previous sejm (parliament) underwent degeneration in the course of the former hundred years and that gave rise to numerous pathologies, resulting in considerable weakening of the once powerful state. In the middle of the 1780’s the approaching conflict between Russia and Turkey and the cooling in the relations between our neighbours seemed to favour realization of the aims planned for long. Despite the lack of unequivocal consent on the part of the nobility to introduce a bold project of political changes, the patriotic camp – in agreement with the king – prepared and enforced the Constitution on Third of May, 1792, which was the first principal act in the European continent, and the second in the world. The Third of May Constitution, the preparation and resolution of which was largely aided by representatives of the Lublin voivodship, abolished liberum veto, did away with free election, replacing it with throne inheritance, and introduced a number of modern political solutions, at the same time not infringing – according to the demand of the Lublin nobility – any of the prerogatives of that class.

Supreme Court
parliament members spirituals
the nobleman's Commonwealth (16th-18th c.)
Opis:
The Supreme Court came into being in 1578. The task of the court was considering the appeals from sentences passed by the lower instance. There were 27 secular judges and 6 church representatives in the court. The same amount of clergymen and secular judges reargued a case in which one of the sides was a person or an institution connected with the church. However from the very beginning parliament members spirituals had more power than they were expected to have according to the law: they took part in the election of the chairman – marshal − as well as reconsidered the cases not connected with the church, together with the secular judges, although they shouldn’t. Some nobleman did not approve that over-participation of clergyman. Therefore there was a serious dispute between the supporters and the opponents of such a strong position of clergyman in the Supreme Court. Finally, the clergymen’s influence on the court's work was diminished. It was a result of the reforms of 18th century.

Opis:
On 15th July 1776 the Lublin gentry, divided into supporters and opponents of the King, held two separate regional diets in two different places. The supporters of the Royal court were headed by Crown Chamberlain Wincenty Potocki and Łuków Castellan Jacek Jezierski, whereas Lublin Voivode Antoni Lubomirski helped by Lublin Chamberlain Tomasz Dłuski gathered the King's opponents. However, although twice as many noblemen took part in the meeting of the opposition, and they met the remaining conditions required by law, the supporters of the King won the confrontation. It was their representatives who sat in the Sejm and the Tribunal, and the ones elected by the opposition were rejected. Representatives of foreign courts: Russian and Austrian became involved in the dispute and it was mainly them that made the Lublin Voivode give up pushing through his ideas.
