Opis:
The paper aimed at comparison of remotely sensed data for forest areas in Poland. The main objective was to study how time−series of satellite data derived from NOAA AVHRR and SPOT VEGETATION (SPOT VGT) are compatible and can be useful for forest cover monitoring. NOAA AVHRR fifteen−year observations collected by the receiving station mounted at the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography were processed with radiometric, geometric and atmospheric corrections to obtain Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) images. Next, daily NDVI images were clustered into ten−day composites and smoothed with Savitzky−Golay filter. The long−term NDVI data derived from SPOT VGT were post−processed in order to prepare reference set to cross−comparison analysis. The study area encompasses forest complexes representative for various climatic conditions: Borecka, Augustów, Knyszyn and Białowieża Forests as well as forests of the Karkonosze and Beskid Żywiecki mountains. The satellite data were analyzed within vegetation period (April−September). The comparison of frequency of cloud−free observations and mean NDVI values over study sites was performed to follow the deviations in two datasets. The Wilcoxon signed−rank test proved that there are statistically significant NDVI differences between NOAA and SPOT data for Augustów, Knyszyn, Białowieża and Karkonosze Forests. On the other hand, NDVI observations for Borecka Forest and Beskid Żywiecki Mts. revealed quite high compatibility. The Spearman rank correlation results proved that NDVI time−series derived from NOAA AVHRR and SPOT VGT are incoherent and depended on test site or year of the observation. The cross−comparison analysis revealed that there is a need for additional investigation into achieving full compatibility of satellite datasets for successful forest cover monitoring.

Opis:
The paper aims at assessing the impact of meteorological conditions on the start of the growing season (SOS) over forests in north−eastern Poland. The main objective was to study which, and if so to what extent, the meteorological parameters can describe the changes of the onset of vegetation in broadleaved forests. Study area encompasses forest complexes located in north−eastern Poland, which are under the influence of maritime and continental climate characterized by a shorter vegetation period and large temperature fluctuations. In this study forest mask containing only pixels with 50% cover of broadleaved forests defined by CLC2012 was applied. The time−series of satellite images derived from VEGETATION mission were applied for determining the start of the growing season. 10−day composites of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from 1999 to 2016, derived at 1 km pixel resolution were filtered with double logistic function in order to determine the SOS. The meteorological parameters such as maximum air temperature, total precipitation and surface solar radiation derived from field measurements one month before the start of the growing season were taken into account. The Pearson correlation results proved that only maximum air temperature was related to the onset of the growing season. The strength of the relations depended on the dominant trees recognized within the forest area. There were no statistically significant relations with the precipitation and solar surface radiation which could be explained by frequent clouds during the month before the SOS and not observed unfavorable conditions that could have impacted on the changes of the growing season in forests.

Opis:
The work presented here aims at developing cover mask for monitoring forest health in Poland using remote sensing data. The main objective was to assess the impact of using the mask on forest condition monitoring combined with vegetation indices obtained from long-term satellite data. In this study, a new mask developed from the CORINE Land Cover 2012 (CLC2012) database is presented and its one-kilometer pixel size matched to low-resolution data derived from SPOT VEGETATION satellite registrations. For vegetation mapping, only pixels with a cover ≥50% of broad-leaved and mixed forests defined by CLC2012 were taken into account. The masked pixels were used to evaluate spatial variability in eight Natural-Forest Regions (NFRs). The largest coverages by masked forests were obtained in Sudetian (65.7%), Carpathian (65.9%) and Baltic (51.3%) regions. For other forest regions the coverage was observed to be around 30–50%. Time-series of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) comprising SPOT VEGETATION images from 1998 until 2014 were computed and cross-comparison analyses on ≥50% and <50% forest cover masks brought up frequent differences at a level higher than 0.05 NDVI in seven out of eight NFRs. An exception is the Sudetian region, where the data was highly consistent. Furthermore, the Mann-Whitney U non-parametric test revealed statistically significant differences in two regions: Baltic and Masurian-Podlasie NFR. The comparative analysis of NDVI confirmed that there is a need for additional investigation of the quality of newly developed forest mask combined with vegetation and meteorological data.
