    Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has clearly shown how fragile the global geopolitical order is, in particular regarding the energy and food systems. International media picture a human tragedy of war intertwined with discussions of food and energy security. In addition, subjective fears of a decline in the quality of life and consumer welfare in developed European economies are voiced. The article aims to describe this specific dialectic related to the war as it reaches beyond warfare itself and increasingly affect the social welfare of European countries. Results of surveys conducted in ten European countries confirm the dominance of respondents’ concerns for their own socio-economic situation and their desire to end the war as soon as possible, even at the expense of Ukrainian concessions to Russia. These social attitudes are decisive when it comes to whether the Ukrainians may further be supported or not. Moreover, these sentiments must be taken into account by those in power in individual European countries. Ultimately, such attitudes may exert the pressure that could contribute to ending the war.

    Opis:
    Aware of the challenges faced by the social sciences in publishing a massive volume of research papers, it is worth looking at a novel but no longer so new ways of machine learning for the purposes of literature review. To this end, I explore a probabilistic topic model called Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) in the context of the epistemological challenge of analysing texts on social welfare. This paper aims to describe how the LDA algorithm works for large corpora of data, along with its advantages and disadvantages. This preliminary characterisation of an inductive method for automated text analysis is intended to give a brief overview of how LDA can be used in the social sciences.

    This paper explores the multifaceted concept of social development within economically advanced countries, delving into the implicit assumption of technological advancement as a cornerstone for well-functioning economies. While digital technologies shape broad socio-economic processes, a counterfactual perspective emerges when examining social development through the lens of (nature-based) social welfare. The analysis encompasses the coexistence of advanced technologies with disparities in living standards, resource appropriation mechanisms impacting both populations and environments, and the underexplored negative consequences of techno-economic development. The article addresses the visible and invisible impacts of information technologies, emphasising issues of labour exploitation, resource extraction practices, and the environmental costs of digital production. Critically assessing optimistic scenarios, the paper suggests the need to broaden discussions beyond the positive aspects of technology, considering the challenges for sustainable welfare posed by exploitative labour, resource extraction, and inequitable benefits. The study advocates for an inclusive approach to (nature-based) social welfare, encompassing marginalised issues and proposing concepts such as degrowth as potential solutions to the rapid development of information technologies and their societal implications.

    The undeniable fact is that various social sciences and other disciplines constitute the research perspective which relates to the practice of a multidimensional phenomenon. The welfare state is an excellent example of such notion, which in its nature unifies many theoretical and practical positions. It seems, however, that the economic and political dimensions of the welfare state (as conceptual or pro-social proposals) are disproportionately exposed both on the basis of scientific reflection and pragmatic approaches used by the institutions of the state. This tendency to think in economic and political terms, which incidentally is maintained for several decades, represents: (a) only one side of a complex nature of social welfare, and (b) a significant reductionism, leading to the elimination of sociological, cultural, educational, and psychological consequences of the functioning of the welfare state. This article is designed to reverse the trend of the dominant perception of the construct of the welfare state in economic and political terms, and replace it with the highlight of the mainly sociological dimension of this phenomenon (the welfare state sociology). However, it does not mean abandonment of the economic and political dimensions in general, as they are an integral part of the issue.

    Autorzy stawiają sobie za cel porównanie dwóch szeroko dyskutowanych współcześnie propozycji reformy rozwiniętego państwa dobrobytu: bezwarunkowego dochodu podstawowego oraz programu gwarancji zatrudnienia. Propozycje te zostaną rozpatrzone z uwzględnieniem: kosztów i warunków finansowania, oddziaływania na istniejącą siatkę zabezpieczeń socjalnych, wpływu na nierówności dochodowe, efektu emancypacyjnego oraz politycznych możliwości realizacji. We wnioskach wyróżnionych w podsumowaniu autorzy biorą pod uwagę odmienne potrzeby krajów centrum i peryferii, a także sugerują, że niewielkie doświadczenie empiryczne związane z dochodem podstawowym, jego potencjalnie niekorzystny wpływ makroekonomiczny oraz niepewny efekt emancypacyjny czynią bardziej przekonującą propozycję gwarancji zatrudnienia.
    The main aim of this article is to compare two widely discussed proposals for the reform of the developed welfare state: Unconditional Basic Income and the Job Guarantee. These proposals will be reviewed by taking into account the costs and the financing conditions, the impact on the existing the social security network, the impact on income inequality, the emancipation effect and the political possibilities of implementation. The conclusions highlighted in the summary focus on the differing needs of the core and peripheral countries, and suggest that a small empirical experience of the UBI, its potentially unfavorable macroeconomic impact, and the uncertain emancipation points towards the more convincing proposition of a job guarantee.

    This article attempts to present the welfare sociology approach to the problems and dilemmas of modern developed capitalist societies. In addition to describing areas of interest in welfare sociology, primarily welfare economics and positive psychology, the focus will be on the characteristics of the condition of modern societies. For this purpose, the term ‘uncertainty’, which is well suited for characterizing the various dimensions of post-modern societies, will be used. Nevertheless, one should keep in mind that this concept has not reached the creditable sociological elaboration (except for the work of economists on precarious forms of employment). As sociologically defined, welfare will be used for analyzing changes in the structure of social differentiation, as well as in social relationships, educational opportunities, political attitudes, patterns of consumption and leisure, to name a few. All these changes reflect not only the impact of globalization on social security systems, but also the consequences of the technological revolution and demographic challenges on subjectively perceived social welfare.
    Niniejszy artykuł próbuje przybliżyć podejście socjologii dobrobytu do problemów i dylematów współczesnych, rozwiniętych społeczeństw kapitalistycznych. Oprócz charakterystyki obszarów zainteresowania socjologii dobrobytu, szczególnie w kontekście ekonomii dobrobytu i psychologii pozytywnej, nacisk zostanie położony na opis kondycji współczesnych społeczeństw. W tym celu użyty zostanie termin „niepewność”, który dobrze nadaje się do charakterystyki różnych wymiarów ponowoczesnych społeczeństw. Należy jednak pamiętać, że koncepcja socjologii dobrobytu nie stanowi (z wyjątkiem prac ekonomistów nad prekarnymi formami zatrudnienia) wyartykułowanego punktu widzenia. W ujęciu socjologicznym kategoria dobrobytu posłuży do analizy zmian w strukturze zróżnicowania społecznego, jak również w relacjach społecznych, możliwościach edukacyjnych, postawach politycznych, wzorcach konsumpcji i wypoczynku, by wymienić tylko kilka. Wszystkie te zmiany odzwierciedlają nie tylko wpływ globalizacji na systemy zabezpieczenia społecznego, ale także konsekwencje rewolucji technologicznej i wyzwań demograficznych na subiektywnie postrzegany dobrobyt społeczny.
