Opis:
Sustainability in Architecture. From Idea to Realization Based on the Canadian Experience The scope of this monograph includes a few topics that share a common indicator “From Idea to Realization”. Both the idea of sustainable development movement and its reflection in a form of a global sustainability movement were presented. The results of the idea are evident in international documents determining the way to reach the model of a permanent development of our civilization. Moreover, it was demonstrated how the idea was adapted by the North American community of architects and used in design process. It was also shown how sustainability is manifested in architecture. The example of Canada illustrated how the idea and its formal records are carried out by the country and the society, as well as how sustainable investments are developed. Architectural sustainable realizations were presented, based on selected Canadian examples from 2003-2015. The scope of other disciplines was exhibited. Canada was chosen for many reasons: Canada is (together with the USA) the incipience of sustainability. It is a country considerably dominated by sustainability in an everyday life, work, and play, what was observed during several study trips. Another reason of the choice is based on a series of successes achieved in the last 50 years in implementing and accomplishing the idea in Canada. The topic was chosen due to its present relevance, importance, as well as the lack of significant expressions of the idea of sustainability in Polish architecture. This condition results probably from a low level of awareness and knowledge about sustainability, both among architects, urban planners, and politicians, as well as among public authorities, developers, and Polish representatives of the construction industry. The research on architecture, conducted by the author, demonstrates that the buildings marked with fashionable labels, like e.g. Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method – BREEAM or Leadership in Energy and Environment Design – LEED, do not always match the concept of sustainability. It is deceptive to perceive sustainability only through systems of certification which become more and more popular in Poland. Essential foundations for truly sustainable constructions are the idea of sustainability and the sense of mission motivating the authors. At present, in Poland an accredited method of evaluation is missing. Foreign systems are adopted to verify the influence of buildings on the environment. That fact makes architects, 166 who apply for the certification ‘on request’, undergo only certain criteria. This way, sustainability in architecture is perceived as a requirement, an impediment, and restriction of freedom of the creator, or as a formal routine to get the label and an unnecessary expense to show off. There is even a concern that it is limited to filling up sections in forms and collecting the points. In the 21st century the idea of sustainability is a paradigm of the present, which inspires to perceive the reality, including architecture, through the prism of the so-called triple bottom line – TBL. TBL takes three elements under consideration as the base and measure of human activity: the ensuring of social satisfaction, the regeneration of environment and the existence in biophysical limits of the planet, and the economic prosperity. The main purpose of the work was to create a compendium of information about the idea of sustainability in architecture and to turn attention to the possibility of designing truly sustainable constructions without the need to use foreign systems of evaluation and certification. Moreover, the objective was to extend and systematize the knowledge and notions connected generally to sustainable architecture, which are often erroneously interpreted or poorly known. The work aimed to bring closer the issues of sustainability, the solutions and methods, and, at the same time, the possibilities and problems of their realization. Accomplishing these tasks can result in prompting the creativity of Polish architects, designers, urban planners, decision-makers, communities, and students; in the self-determination in relation to current world issues; and in creating the foundation for thinking our own systems of values over in the areas of sustainability. In the work, following sustainability areas were determined: energy, water, materials, waste, greenery, transport, cost, and place, community, and process, in the TBL context. In accordance with above mentioned, the book is expected to constitute the origin to the development of Polish architecture and to determine the domestic school of sustainability. The school will appear through the commitment of Polish designers and professional circles to the idea of global sustainable development and in a series of constructions compatible with the spirit of our times. The monograph is supposed to introduce, especially to practicing architects, the leading role of the vision and mission of the designer and of the design idea filled with respect for the nature, place, and community. The book is supposed to demonstrate to decision-makers and clerks how it is possible to break organizational and formal restrictions in order to make the design and investment processes serve the fulfillment of the idea of sustainable development. The author's assumptions were made in the work that sustainability manifests itself in architecture with ‘the language of sustainability’, which ‘speaks’ independently of certification schemes; and that the occurrence of ‘culture of sustainability’ is the prerequisite for the implementation of the idea of sustainable development. In order to popularize the ‘culture of sustainability’, changes of behaviour, habit, and consumption patterns are necessary, most of them directly in the sector of construction and architecture. Reaching public opinion is a long-lasting process, and the changes of mentality and attitudes that follow, demand even more time and special efforts. The profitability of sustainable solutions and their influence on mankind, i.e. health, life, and efficiency (of learning, work, and rest) and on the nature, i.e. consuming resources, are crucial issues. These issues carry an inestimable research and developmental capacity for creating domestic tools and methods of evaluation. As an effect, new created professional specializations ought to become a help in the process of accomplishing investments (newly designed and modernised) by providing consultants, experts, optimizers, accountants, simulators etc. to all the areas of sustainability. This way the market of ‘green jobs’ will be created, which could help the Polish economy. Moreover, in Poland a virtual platform of information and experience exchange, the registration of sustainable investments and undertakings dedicated to the idea of sustainable development, should be created.
