    In the Polish literature on the subject, prostitution is analyzed from various theoretical perspectives, but, first of all, from the perspective of social pathology. This approach makes the researchers focus mainly on the social maladjustment of women providing sex services and the reasons for their violation of the normative order. In my ethnographic research conducted in escort agencies in Poland, I was willing to go beyond this narrow outlook. I have adapted an interactionist perspective to analyze the escort agencies as organizations where intense interactions between employees, as well as employees and clients, take place, the sex work process is organized, and the meanings of prostitution are negotiated. I conducted the analysis according to the procedures of the grounded theory methodology. It allowed me to see and describe such processes as: (re)defining the situation of providing sex services from vice to work, sex work as a collective action, performing sex work, secondary socialization for sex work. The adaption of an interactionist perspective opens some new directions for analysis, which could help to understand the phenomenon of women getting involved in and continuing to provide sex services for a long time.

    The article presents the notion of violence in indoor sex work in Poland. It encompasses forms of violence experienced by female sex workers from their clients and co-workers. What is more, the paper presents how novice and more experienced workers define those experiences, together with the strategies that they apply when dealing with aggressive clients. Also discussed are the actions taken against the clients that present aggressive behavior by the managers and security workers of escort agencies. The article is based on qualitative field research carried out in escort agencies in Łódź, Poland. The main techniques of data collection comprised observations and unstructured interviews. The data were analyzed in accordance with the grounded theory methodology.

    W literaturze przedmiotu kobiety świadczące usługi seksualne opisywane są przede wszystkim z dwóch perspektyw: jako bezwolne ofiary, które nie potrafią kierować swoim życiem lub zdecydowanie rzadziej, jako świadome podmioty, podejmujące decyzję o takim sposobie zarobkowania. W artykule te dwie perspektywy zostaną zestawione z doświadczeniami kobiet, które swoje zaangażowanie w usługi seksualne postrzegają w kategoriach zaradności. Zaprezentowane zostaną podtypy zaradności wyróżnione podczas analizy danych. Opisany zostanie także ambiwalentny charakter tak rozumianej zaradności, w której duma z faktu radzenia sobie w życiu splata się nierzadko z poczuciem wstydu i lęku, wynikających ze świadomości negatywnego odbioru społecznego. Bazę empiryczną artykułu stanowią 52 wywiady swobodne z kobietami świadczącymi usługi seksualne w agencjach towarzyskich, poddane analizie za pomocą procedur metodologii teorii ugruntowanej.
    Women providing sex services have been hitherto described in the research literature from the two main perspectives: as victims who are unable to manage their lives, or, much less frequently, as conscious beings who make decisions about this way of earning their living. These two perspectives are juxtaposed in the article with the experiences of women who interpret their involvement in sex services as resourcefulness. The empirical data have been collected by means of the unstructured interviews with 52 women providing sex services in escort agencies. Grounded theory procedures have been used to analyze the research material. The analysis allows to distinguish the subtypes of resourcefulness. The article discusses an ambivalent nature of resourcefulness understood in this way: the sense of being proud of their ability to cope well in life is intertwined with a sense of shame and anxiety that arise from the awareness of being perceived negatively by the society.

    The main aim of the article is to identify the capabilities and constraints of using CAQDAS (Computer-Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software) programs in qualitative data analysis. Our considerations are based on the personal experiences gained while conducting the research projects using the methodology of grounded theory (GT) and the NVivo 8 program. In presented article we focused on relations between the methodological principles of grounded theory and the technical possibilities of NVivo 8. The paper presents our opinion about the most important options available in NVivo 8 and their application in the studies based on the methodology of grounded theory.

    W literaturze przedmiotu rozpoczęcie świadczenia usług seksualnych traktowane jest często jako efekt pojedynczej decyzji wynikającej ze splotu uwarunkowań społecznych, ekonomicznych czy psychologicznych. Znalezienie czynników odpowiedzialnych za wejście na drogę prostytucji staje się wobec tego podstawowym celem badań empirycznych (szczególnie ilościowych). Jednocześnie zdecydowanie mniej uwagi poświęca się procesom adaptacji i socjalizacji wtórnej, które zachodzą w pierwszym okresie świadczenia usług seksualnych poprzez intensywne interakcje nowicjuszki z innymi aktorami współtworzącymi ów świat społeczny. Celem artykułu jest analiza tych subprocesów, składających się na proces budowania zaangażowania w pracę seksualną, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem jego kolektywnego wymiaru w kontekście agencji towarzyskich. Artykuł opiera się na jakościowych badaniach terenowych prowadzonych wśród pracownic agencji towarzyskich w jednym z dużych miast Polski. Zgromadzone dane analizowane były zgodnie z procedurami metodologii teorii ugruntowanej.
    In the literature on the subject, the beginning of providing sexual services is often regarded as an effect of one decision arising from a collection of social, economic, or psychological conditions. Therefore, identifying the factors behind choosing a path to prostitution becomes the basic aim for empirical studies (especially the quantitative ones). At the same time, considerably less attention is paid to the processes such as adaptation and secondary socialization, which take place in the initial stage of providing sexual services—through intensive interactions the novice has with other actors that co-create the social world at hand. The article is aimed at analyzing the above-mentioned sub-processes, which form the process of engaging in sex work, with special emphasis put on its collective dimension within the context of escort agencies.
