Janus Pannonius, the first great poet in Hungary, brought his skills to perfection in Italy. He attended Guarino Veronese’s school in Ferrara and studied law in Padua, where he came into contact with many poets and scholars. The paper deals with the references to those contacts in Janus’ epigrams. Many a time Pannonius not only sneers at second-rate poets and inefficient scholars, but also ruthlessly ridicules their mental impotence and apparent erudition. On the other hand, he willingly praises people, whose output is really splendid and composed in accordance with the requirements of contemporary poetics. Janus’ scoffs are first of all addressed to his schoolmates. Being a poet aware of his own talent, Pannonius tends to point out the erroneous understanding of Renaissance theories, the misuse of the principle of imitatio antiquorum and the lack of self-invention in adopting other – both classic and modern – authors’ motifs. Neither does he approve of innovatory style of writing and considers that as an offence against pure Latinitas. Despite his severe criticism, he also manages to appreciate true talent, praise poetical skills or admire someone’s versatility. With unaffected pleasure and approval he is singing the praises of Guarino Veronese, his master from Ferrara. Janus highlights Guarino’s knowledge, eloquence, didactic powers and great command of Latin and Greek. In his epigrams Pannonius shows oneself as a careful observer precisely describing features of persons from his own circle, many times showing them, if that is the word, in a distorting mirror, what does not, perhaps, creates complete picture of Renaissance humanists, but surely makes it more witty and florid.

Opis:
One of the writings left by Marcus Aurelius are reflections written in Greek and entitled τὰ εἰς ἑαυτόν. They are concerned with application of the rules of stoic ethics in life. The present article presents the semantic value of the substantivized words, i.e. substantivizations contained in Book I of that work. Aurelius substantivizes adjectives, infinitives, participles as well as εἶναι with a predicate, the accusativus cum infinitivo construction and sentences. The tendency to substantivize words denoting inclinations as well as active, durative, punctual and terminative activities can be seen in the use of this process. Anthropological substantivizations as well as ones connected with the ideals of stoic ethics are numerous. Τὰ εἰς ἑαυτόν were not meant to be published and this is why they were written in a simple language with the use of a lot of mental shortenings. Substantivization also allowed conciseness of the text, at the same time making it possible to express the thoughts precisely.

The paper attempts to put some light on the question of elocutio in Janus Pannonius’ epigrams, showing means of expression he preferred, as anaphora, antithesis, comparatio, enumeratio, epitheton, sententia and synonymia. Using them, the poet easily attracts the attention of the reader and captures his imagination. Enumerationes may be often found in laudatory or thanksgiving epigrams, especially when Pannonius tries to portray a person, a thing or a situation precisely. To incite the curiosity of the reader Janus willingly uses antithesis which gives rise to tension and makes the culminating point more puzzling. Due to synonymia the poet avoids monotony and makes the description of a given object more vivid. Sententia also plays an important role in epigrams, as it first of all allows conciseness of the text and then makes the contents timeless. Means of expression enumerated in the paper were used by Pannonius more often than some others, that is why they seem to be his favourites. One must remember, however, that to meet the requirements of Renaissance poetics, as far as elocutio is concerned, the poet was naturally made to choose those means of expression, which had been typical elements of the ancient epigrams. Needless to say, only thus did he manage to deal with the principles of imitatio and aemulatio antiquorum.

The various and rich output of Janus Pannonius, Hungarian poet of Renaissance, includes almost five hundred epigrams, written in splendid Latin and following traditions of poetics. The article gives several examples of Pannonius' epigrams to reveal references to Martial they contain. Janus refers to the classics in accordance with the principles of imitatio and aemulatio, due to which the work meets the requirements of Renaissance poetics without losing its own authenticity at the same time. Pannonius is not only the first known poet of his country, but also the first who implanted European culture in Hungary.

Jan Everaerts, poeta z Hagi, zwany z łacińska Ianusem Secundusem (1511–1536) pozostawił po sobie m.in. przekłady z greki na łacinę, epigramaty, listy i dzienniki podróży, ale znany jest głównie jako autor utworów miłosnych: księgi elegii zatytułowanej Iulia na cześć jego pierwszej ukochanej oraz słynnego zbioru 19 utworów pt. Basia (Pocałunki) poświęconego drugiej wielkiej miłości poety, którą opiewał pod imieniem Neaera. Basia były chętnie czytane, naśladowane i przekładane tak przez twórców współczesnych Secundusowi, jak i późniejszych. Do dzisiaj doczekały się one wielu mniej lub bardziej wiernych oryginałowi przekładów na języki europejskie. W przekładzie polskim mamy Pocałunki Arnolda Spaeta (1932) oraz Wiesława Sienkiewicza (1991), ten drugi to przekład izometryczny dokonany na podstawie przekładu filologicznego Ksawerego Sajewicza. Autorka artykułu prezentuje zarówno spostrzeżenia dotyczące wybranych polskich tłumaczeń, jak i próbkę własnego przekładu Secundusowych „buziaków”.
Jan Everaerts, a poet from The Hague, also known as Ianus Secundus (1511–1536) gave the posterity his translations from Greek into Latin, epigrams, letters and travel diaries among others, but he is mainly known as the author of love poetry: a book of elegies entitled Iulia in honor of his first beloved and the famous collection of 19 poems entitled Basia (The Kisses), written for the other lady of his heart, named Neaera. Basia were willingly read, imitated and translated both by contemporaries of Secundus and poets of the next centuries; there are plenty of translations of Basia into European languages, more or less faithful to the Latin original. In Polish we may read Pocałunki (The Kisses) by Arnold Spaet (1932) and by Wiesław Sienkiewicz (1991) – the latter is an isometric translation based on the philological one by Ksawery Sajewicz. The author of the paper presents both observations on selected Polish translations and a sample of her own translation of Secundus’ Basia.

History shows the books are either readers hearts’ desire or some spare or even useless objects. The example of that are many authors of ancient Greek and Latin literature. The output of splendid writers and poets, esteemed during their lives, having their place on the obligatory reading list of well educated human being and considered as the members of high literature pantheon, happened to be forgotten or even destroyed on purpose many a time over years, as poems of Sappho or Ovid. Some others, as Cicero, Catullus, Livy, Vergil, Tibullus, Propertius, Horace, Petronius, Statius or Apuleius once lost their popularity, once won back their glory. The amateurs of literature, with their searching for missing books, saved them for next generations. Scholar with a distinctive contribution to that are, among others, Francesco Petrarca, Giovanni Boccaccio and Poggio Bracciolini, the precursors of renaissance, who were sifting the resources of European libraries. The valuable source of ancient literature are Egyptian papyri and parchment palimpsests; due to the former ones we may read e. g. Menander’s comedies, meanwhile the latter ones have given us such authors as Plautus, Terence, the Elder and Younger Pliny, Sallust, Lucan, Juvenal and Gaius. The challenge for nowadays is not only to stock properly, but also to examine precisely this inestimable legacy.
