Taking David Graeber’s theory of bullshit jobs as basis the author argues in the text that it may refer to Polish social work. The analysis focus on the perception of their own professional duties by social workers, which is the basic condition for qualifying their work as a ’bullshit job’. The main axis is problematic two ways to carry out social work: as work with people and work with documents. The conclusions concern the need to reflect on the current shape of social policy in Poland as the basis for social work and to divide the mentioned policy into social work and cash benefits.

Przed pracownikami socjalnymi stawia się cały czas nowe wyzwania. Oczekuje się od nich profesjonalnego podejścia do klienta. Coraz częściej o profesjonalizmie świadczy nie tylko wiedza merytoryczna, lecz także kompetencje i zasoby osobiste adeptów pracy socjalnej. Celem niniejszego opracowania jest scharakteryzowanie kompetencji i zasobów pracowników socjalnych w kontekście wyzwań dla pracy pomocowej z drugim człowiekiem. Problem badawczy brzmi: Jakie zasoby powinny charakteryzować pracownika socjalnego w kontekście wykonywanej przez niego pracy? Artykuł został przygotowany w oparciu o metodę desk research. Praca pracownika socjalnego umiejscowiona została w koncepcji układów społecznych Znanieckiego. Kolejne części artykułu to teoretyczna analiza pojęć związanych z pracą ludzką, pracą zawodową oraz profesjonalizacją pracy socjalnej przez zwrócenie szczególnej uwagi na kompetencje i zasoby osobiste osób chcących realizować się zawodowo w roli pracownika socjalnego. Wartości, jakimi powinien się kierować pracownik socjalny, opracowane przez Kantowicz, stanowiły podstawę do wyboru opisanych w ostatniej części kompetencji i zasobów osobistych pracowników socjalnych.
Changes in social life have caused social work to evolve over recent years. Both the nature of work and the profile of a social welfare client have changed. Social workers are constantly faced with new challenges. They are expected to have a professional approach to the client. Increasingly, professionalism is evidenced not only by substantive knowledge, but also by the competences and personal resources of social work students. The aim of this study is to characterize the competences and resources of social workers in the context of challenges in helping others. The research problem is: What resources should characterize a social worker in the context of his/her work? The article was prepared based on the desk research method. The work of a social worker was placed in Znaniecki’s concept of social arrangements. The next parts of the article are a theoretical analysis of concepts related to human work, professional work and the professionalization of social work by paying particular attention to the competences and personal resources of people who want to pursue a professional career as a social worker. The values that should guide a social worker, developed by Kantowicz, were the basis for selecting the competences and personal resources of social workers described in the last part.

Social insurance law and labour law have been intrinsically interrelated since the very beginning of their existence, as they cover the same sphere of human activity. At present we can observe that these relations are weakening mainly due to the continuously extending personal scope of social insurance law. The most important relations between social insurance law and labour law may be classified as relations of material (defining conditions of granting benefits), functional (legal methodology and political measures) and organisational (administrative) nature. A shift in the direction of the influence on shaping the rights and obligations of the labour relationship parties may be observed. It is no longer labour law that exclusively determines the situations protected (insurance risk), but to a broader extent both social insurance law and labour law are used simultaneously to reach a goal that is pursued.

O presente artigo objetiva problematizar a configuração da proteção social brasileira, bem como seus efeitos no trabalho em serviços no contexto pandêmico. Enquanto procedimentos metodológicos, prezou-se pela abordagem qualitativa, com o uso de recursos quantitativos. Além da revisão de literatura que subsidiou as reflexões, também foi utilizado como instrumento de coleta de dados um questionário eletrônico direcionado a assistentes sociais brasileiros em exercício no contexto de pandemia, do qual obtivemos 201 retornos, com respostas das cinco regiões brasileiras (Norte, Nordeste, Sul, Sudeste e Centro Oeste). As problematizações expostas indicam um aprofundamento das ofensivas ao sistema de proteção social brasileiro no contexto pandêmico, as quais ampliam desigualdades, precarizam o trabalho e destituem direitos. Do ponto de vista deste estudo, apontam-se para o seu aprofundamento a intensificação e a individualização no trabalho em serviços.
This article aims to problematize contemporary Brazilian social policy in the pandemic context, as well as its effects on work in services. As methodological procedures, the qualitative approach was valued, with the use of quantitative resources. In addition to the literature review that supported the reflections, an electronic questionnaire directed to Brazilian social workers in the context of a pandemic was also used as a data collection instrument, from which we obtained 201 returns, with responses from the five Brazilian regions (North, Northeast , South, Southeast and Midwest). The problematizations exposed indicate a deepening of the offensives to the Brazilian social protection system in the pandemic context, which increase inequalities, make work precarious and deprive rights. From the point of view of this study, the intensification and individualization of work in services are pointed out for its deepening.

This paper presents what may be regarded as a novel approach to social theory. Whilst laying stress on the economic structure, the theory views it as embedded within a broader societal context. According to the theory, society is viewed as a set of four structures. A set of categories for analysis of those structures is depicted and the most detailed presentation is devoted to the economy. In this case, it includes such innovative notions as quasi-work, lumpenwork and the whole theory of ownership of labour power. This implies an analysis of the differences between the legal and socio-economic approach to property.

Objectives The aim of the study is to describe both professional and social activities of patients after heart transplant. Material and Methods Ninety-five heart transplant patients treated at the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze were surveyed, comprising 29 women (30.5%) and 66 men (69.5%). The average age of respondents was 54.3 years old (standard deviation (SD) = 15 years); the average period that had elapsed since the heart transplant was 7.1 years (SD = 4 years). We designed a questionnaire as a tool for collecting information from patients. Results Twenty-five percent of patients worked at the time of completion of the questionnaire. Eighty percent of those patients were working before and after the transplant, 20% – only after transplantation (p < 0.05). A different job position at a new workplace had 47.8% of patients, 34.8% of them had the same job position at the same work place as they had had before, 63.4% of the heart transplant respondents were pensioners. Eighty-two percent of patients had a certificate with a designated degree of disability – among them: 69% had a certificate for a significant degree of disability, 22% – for a moderate degree of disability. Among those surveyed, 52.5% said that their financial situation had not changed whereas 34.5% of those surveyed reported a change for the worse. Thirty-seven percent of respondents reported changes in family relationships. Seventy-seven percent reported that they received help from family members, as compared with 19% who did not. Conclusions Only 25.3% of the patients treated at the Silesian Centre for Heart Diseases after heart transplant are employed and it is one of the lowest employment rates in this category of patients in Europe. One third of working patients have the same work place as they had before their operation. Heart transplant is a cause of changes in family relationships. Most often family bonds are strengthened but sometimes family members become nervous, impatient and unwilling to talk about the transplant.

The closest family is the most natural support group for seniors. Consequently close family members seem to play an important preventive role in the context of social exclusion of older people. Although the activity of seniors in the area of family, their involvement in family life and giving care to their grandchildren can be a burden, these elements are the important parts of the elderly people’s identity, give a sense of social belonging and promote the process of successful aging. The main aim of this article is to present the results of research into the seniors’ involvement in family life, a kind of support which grandparents give to their families and the meaning which grandparents give to caring for grandchildren. The results of the research indicate that maternal grandmothers have more forms of activities with their grandchildren and forms of assistance in the care of grandchildren than maternal grandfathers and grandparents from father side. In addition, results show that both for grandmothers and grandfathers involvement in the care of grandchildren is an important part of life and that the relationships with grandchildren enrich seniors’ existence. Involvement in the care of grandchildren is equated with a goal in life to a greater extent by the retired grandparents in comparison to the grandmothers and grandfathers professionally active.

This paper analyzes the meanings attributed to work in contemporary Polish society in the context of Inglehart and Welzel’s claim regarding the passage from survival to self-expression values. Research has documented a systematic decline in the position of work on the list of the most important values. However, work is also documented as being of fundamental importance for identity, self-esteem, and the delimitation of social categories. The authors offer a mixed-methods approach to the issue of work. Based on quantitative data gathered through the EVS, they place Poland in the context of European trends pertaining to the significance and centrality of work. Using qualitative evidence, the authors identify and reconstruct the key social representations employed to think about and discuss work-related issues. In conclusion, they point to structural elements of the social imaginary of work that result in the coexistence of different (often contradictory) perceptions of this sphere of social life.

Satisfaction with compensation for work in modern society, especially in welfare states, plays a very important role. It not only ensures the efficient use of available production facilities and natural resources, but also determines the size of the state budget, the quality of life in the country, an attitude towards emigration and the general state of social situation. In a market economy, wages are the expression of capital and labour relations, both at the national and at the company level. The compensation systems are also influenced by some external factors such as tax system, technological level, labour supply and demand balance and legal regulation. The article seeks to reveal how the satisfaction with pay for work affects the social changes in the country. The article present the results of the research carried out in Lithuania in 2017.

The doctrine of predestination in the Lutheran and Calvinist theology, along with the assumption of a radical separation of nature and grace as well as the material and spiritual realm, had a significant impact on social life. The salvation of the soul, the soteriological dimension of human destiny, remained dependent on the grace of God (predestination), undeserved and unfathomable. The earthly reality, the institution of the Church and good works could in no way contribute to the salvation of the soul. Martin Luther, especially at the initial stage of his reformation activities, focused on private spirituality, considering the earthly dimension of reality to be the domain of the secular power. John Calvin and his successors justified in their teachings a different attitude manifested in the interest in the earthly world based on religious ethics. The doctrine of predestination, therefore, did not result in, as one would expect, quietism but in activism. The Calvinists believed that predestination was not manifested in single good deeds but in a certain methodology of systematised life based on religious ethics. Religiousness was supposed to be expressed through activity in the world and was meant to show the glory of its Creator. Work, thrift and honesty were supposed to lead to the rebirth, i.e. “sanctification” of the world, and were the essence of what Max Weber called the spirit of capitalism. Calvinism led to changes in the approach to such economic issues as money lending at interest, work or enrichment.
